Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Set up your Wii for homebrew, which is extremely easy. You can either use CleanRip (which is useful since it also lets you rip GCN games if you have a b/c Wii) or a USB loader. Connect the HDD to the PC and if you used a USB loader, you'll need to use one of several programs to convert the files to ISOs (I think? Dolphin might support wbfs natively now).

Dolphin itself is just a matter of downloading it and running it. You can use the wiki and it has a lot of info about compatibility and settings for games, but it's very incomplete, especially for Linux and Mac.

Ah, okay, thanks a lot. :)

I missed out on 99% of games from the Gamecube and Wii generations (but own both of em). There are some local yardsales (even think I saw Xenoblade at one of em) and I am planning to pick up all the games I can find (and then emulate them). Wondering what GAF recommends I play from those two consoles.

Eternal Darkness
Wind Waker
Twilight Princess
Little Kings Story
Xenoblade
F-Zero GX
Paper Mario: TTYD
Viewtiful Joe
Smash Bros Brawl
Pikmin
SM Galaxy

Some other Wii games mentioned here:

Hmm, trying to set up 360 controller for xenoblade using the 360 controller button icon retexture.

I can't figure out what buttons map to what though. Anyone have a link to where it is explained?

edit: nevermind I figured it out. Its mapped to the classic controller and where the buttons are, not what they are named. So as is b and b is a, etc.

Never mind. Lol anyone know the dolphin build that is specifically for Xenoblade?

How does metroid prime trilogy play with dolphin? I'd like to play it with something with dual analog sticks and not a wii remote. Is that possible?

this is honestly one of the greatest emulators i have ever seen. even on my shitty lenovo t520 this thing plays flawlessly. i thoroughly enjoyed ssbb, but at the moment i'm in no financial situation to buy a wii, let alone just for one game. i may pick one up in the future just to support nintendo in their time of need. but for now, ssbb on dolphin will do nicely. extraordinarily even.

Dude. Emulation isn't equal to piracy. Buy your damn games. It's people like you that are the problem, giving emulation, homebrew, CFW, etc a bad name.

Well, I seem to have gotten xenoblade working at solid 30fps and no crackle.

I have no idea what the problem was, when I tried to change to d3d11 like durante has in his settings post linked above dolphin basically stopped working saying my gpu was too old. I tried updating the driver and my computer like blew up. So I reformatted, installed newest drivers (my amd driver was pretty old), installed dolphin, and after some tweaking got it going.

I do have to use hle to get 30fps all the time. I think the issue is the build durante used is older, and newer builds are actually slower because they are more accurate in their emulation (basing this off the offiical dolphin forums.) LLE is okay most of the time but does drop to mid 20s semi-regularly (like if two character use a power move at once).

However, I no longer get any crackling with hle so it's all good!

Thanks for the help!

guys i have a very strange problem with dolphin, codes action replay or gecko codes simply not work on resident evil 3 nemesis pal version. Someone know something about this thing? :(

Just for posteritys sake, click Config, and check if "Enable Cheats" is turned on.

Alright, one more test example before I'm done for the night. I'd appreciate thoughts again on this alternative method.

The examples above are 2x the size of the original image at 1024 pixels wide.

These new ones are 1440 pixels wide, what you would get if you were playing the game in 1080p 4:3.

Here's a GIF example (Again, not a perfect representation but it does show the sharpness difference.)

ok i'm stupid but not so stupid ! :P
this problem is totally related to this game, and the pal version, in the ntsc version, action replay codes work but gecko codes not. This is the only game that gave me problem with cheats. And i'm trying to understand why....

Huh. I actually still have the archive for the build I used for Xenoblade.

Uploaded it here, since the place I got it seems to be gone.

Thanks. I'm using your build however there is still screen tearing even after I enabled V-Sync. The framerate doesn't seem stable at 30 even if it's still on 35 locked, it's between 23-29/30. Backend is OpenGL and when I tried to change this to DirectD11, it slowed down a lot. The sound cracking most likely gone but I will report back if I get any however I still hear minor jumps for sound especially when battles end. How exactly does your game play? Almost perfectly?

P.S should I change Xenoblade properties before booting up?

I used DX9. I don't think that build is patched for HLE so you will still get audio crackling (eventually), but you can patch it yourself (er, if you can find it anywhere). I used LLE, but it's a lot more CPU intensive. And yeah, it ran perfectly unless I was recording. Got framerate dips with LLE so I had to switch to HLE and then it was back to full speed.

And I don't recall needing to change any settings in Xenoblade's properties, and I didn't have trouble with tearing. That build might have a broken force V-sync option. I didn't even have it on (I do have it forced by my driver though).

Some builds here with an HLE fix already applied.

I did a Wind Waker HD vs Dolphin comparison and people were mentioning that the colors looked nicer in WW HD so I decided to try some SweetFx to see if I could get the colors to look a bit sweeter.

This is what I ended up with and wanted to get some thoughts.

Left is vanilla, right is SweetFx'd

And here is just a regular screenshot of that.

That looks great! My jaw is on the floor.

You should post your SweetFX settings in case someone searches the thread later on.

OT, but I'm playing through OOT 3d right now on my new XL. I'm blown away by how good the game looks, a lot of the improvements come from the general geometry which I don't think went into Wind Waker HD.

Yeah sure. I'll just post up a full zip of my SweetFx so people can unzip and be done with it.

There a version for x86 and the x64 version of Dolphin so just copy the contents of the folder you need to the root of the Dolphin directory.

I have a bit of an issue. I'm stuck at a gray screen in Wind Waker and apparently the "fix item hang" patch fixes the issue. Problem is... I deleted all the patches. Is there any way I can get it back? I've searched online everywhere.
Edit: Doesn't matter, fixed it. For anyone else with the same problem, just restart the game and load your save from in-game, not using save states.

The list of Bluetooth adapters from the OP is kinda daunting. I just want to know which one is a good deal and works.

So Pandora's Tower is fully playable now? Does it still have the texture issue when zooming? It's on the Wiki page but sometimes that info is outdated.

Looks like the infamous glitch does not impact Dolphin, so combined with HD output it naturally seems like the best option to play the game.

Don't know much about specs and whatnot but would this emulator work well (and by well I mean fun and playable, not everything on high settings etc) on this laptop:

Turbo up to 2.4GHz AMD Quad-Core A6-3420M Processor; 4MB L2 Cache
6GB system memory
1GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Graphics

Your CPU isn't up for it. You'll be struggling to maintain decent FPS.

Best bet is to download it anyway and fiddle to see what you can get.

A handful of games maybe. Most games (and especially some of the more popular ones) are going to require a faster CPU than that.

Amazing. It's almost like you have Wind Waker HD(HD edition).

Do you have the HD textures applied?

I have the old version of Hypatias pack, but it only covers areas like the first island and general things like the HUD.

One HUGE benefit of it is the clouds look much, much nicer.
