If this pic is any indication of it's comparative size, no beast past or present would have a fucking chance...

If they ever make a new Jaws movie, it'll have to be based on a 50 foot Megalodon (or a lot longer, as the original novel suggested). Nothing else will do.

I absolutely love the king creatures of the water. Dolphins are just mindblowingly cool. No animal I'd want more for a pet. Killer Whales seem to have much of a dolphin's intelligence, with some bad assness mixed in. And great whites are just outright bad asses. Mixed with all the other wierd and whacky spieces in the water, and you've got a stunning array of power, intelligence and beauty.

Maybe a shonisaurus, a 50 foot ichthyosaur could give him run.

Does this happen a lot? I've never read about dolphins protecting humans. That's so FUCKING COOL. Are there any more stories like this?

to update you on the megalodon, it seems the initial estimations on its probable size are wrong due to incorrect comparisons of tooth size scaling with the white pointer.
although still huge, there doesnt seem to be much evidence pointing towards an 18m length. (the jaw of the megalodon is more akin to the blue shark rather than a pointer)

still... a 10m megalodon is a big fucking fish.

I'm not sure, but I strongly doubt that they use their teeth. I think they use there nose or whatever you call it and basically ram into sharks.

It was along the lines that a Dolphin will slam into the weak underside of the shark, destroying internal organs

I suppose if one was chased, they'd split up and attack.

well, dolphins travel and work in a group, they use click communication and they can confuse their prey with a bubble attack. unlike sharks whom are not known for their 'teamwork' skills.

dolphins have been known to live with sharks in some sort of peaceful existance in water parks, but sometimes the dolphins dont feel comfortable (when there are young present and so on) and the sharks are found a few metres from the pool with all their internal organs smashed.

WTF!?

Poachers kill 'dolphins that saved swimmers'

ALEX MITA

POACHERS in New Zealand may have killed two members of a pod of dolphins that recently saved the lives of swimmers from a great white shark attack, lifeguards said yesterday.

The mutilated carcasses of the two bottlenose dolphins were found on Wednesday in the Awaroa River, which branches off the upper reaches of Whangarei Harbour on North Island’s east coast.

Staff from New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) believe the dolphins died about two weeks ago after drowning in fishing nets set out by criminals poaching fish. DOC officer Richard Parrish said their tails had been hacked off, probably to free them from the net.

Three weeks ago, seven dolphins protected Ocean Beach lifeguard Rob Howes, 45, his 15-year-old daughter Nicky, 16-year-old lifeguard trainee Helen Slade, and Karina Cooper, 15, from the jaws of a great white shark at Ocean Beach, Whangarei Heads.

The protective dolphins have been hailed as the humans’ saviours after the incident was reported this week.

Nooooo :(

That may be true, but it just sounds so funny to me for some reason. :D

Dolphins and killer whales are cool and all but comparing a whole team of dolphins to just one shark or a 20 foot Killer Whale to a 10 foot great white isn't exactly fair.

Still, that's an amazing story. Dolphins > Chimps. Too bad they don't have hands.

Too bad? I'd hate to live in a world of handed dolphin overlords.
