Donkey Kong Bananza (aka Banjo Kongzoie) - July 17, 2025

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I really want this game - this is the exact sort of thing I want more of. It looks fun, I like the bold, colorful look, and it just looks clean.

Like, it’s obviously not going to be a life changing experience, but it’s the kind of fun, breezy game I feel like I don’t get enough of these days.

I mean it's going to be fun to play and sell great no doubt. But the magic of the first 2 games on SNES (and the adventure / exploration part of the incredible second game) with that legendary OST is still unmatched by anything DK Nintendo did after.

As I said in the Treehouse thread, this really doesn't feel like a DK game at all. It feels like a terrain destruction demo that they decided to put DK in.

Then someone else said that this should have been a Wario game, and YES, that makes so much sense! Smashing through rocks and mining for gold and shit is exactly what Wario would do. The art style and atmosphere also feel more Wario than DK. Everything does. Wouldn't surprise me if this originally actually was a Wario game, but then they decided that DK would sell better. I just can't believe that they decided to make a 3D DK and this is what they came up with. It doesn't make sense.

(I'm not saying this won't be a good game. Just that it's a really fucking weird DK game.)

EXACTLY what I was thinking yes. This feels like a Wario game where they swapped the main character at the last minute.
The distinctive DK atmosphere is completely absent and the gameplay gimmick doesn't seem to lend to interesting situations and scenarios. I'm willing to be proven wrong, but this isn't a great first impression.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they even include an Easter egg that lets us visit New Donk City somehow

legitimately the most interesting game of the direct, depending on how much they make use of the destructivity as a gameplay device
The part I don't see many people talking about is where drilled up to another level, EXACTLY like TotK.

Looks as braindead easy and unexciting as Mario Odyssey. Destructible terrain is cool though

Honestly after It Takes Two and Split Fiction Nintendo can only play catch up with Hazelight Studios and they seem to be loosing that game. I'm talking about creativity/gameplay of course, not sales/popularity

For me, this game is like eating a sapote... I know it's delicious, but the texture is hard for me to swallow.

Same here... I like the texture and the colors, but I hate the new Donkey Kong model.

Me with Bananza

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Video didn’t look fun but they seem to just be showing DK running through levels smashing everything in his path easily.

I'm too stupid to understand if this Pauline stuff is a joke or not GAF. Give it to me straight.

leaked image.
probably means that it's somewhat of a prequel to Odyssey... unless it's Pauline's daughter of course.

if it is a prequel to Odyssey they gotta explain a bunch of stuff tho, because New Donk City's existence hinges on the fact that Mario saves Pauline from Donkey Kong (which is actually Cranky Kong of course).

so maybe this is in fact Cranky Kong we're playing in this game, and something happens that leads go the events of Donkey Kong, and then of course New Donk City being build.

but, this is a Nintendo game... so Story is probably not their focus and will mostly be relegated to fan theories as usual 🤣

Hype for this game motivated me to pick up the Switch version of DKC:R. I love what Retro did with Returns and Tropical Freeze. The feeling of weighted movement of DK is awesome and I like how the partners you pick up enhance the moves and movement at your disposal.

I wonder if Nintendo will release a Switch 1 version of the game. Also wondering this about lots of their other announced Switch 2 games.

I’m no tech guy, but I doubt the Switch (1) would be able to run this with all the destruction going on. And even if it could handle the destructible environments, I very much doubt it’d be able to keep it in memory without needing to re-set the map every 5 minutes.

Nintendo doesn't do crossgen unless the game was already announced for the old gen.

also DK could never run on Switch 1 without decimating performance and resolution

Just as Zelda timelines "almost, but not quite, makes sense". Nintendo doesn't really care much about consistency between game releases. You can come up with any theory you want but Nintendo just make it up as they go along.
