For those of you who are taking your time clearing layers…yeah you're in for a very long ride

Especially because in the early layers, you can just go around smashing everything blindly looking for collectibles

The deeper you get, the environment starts to harm you or requires a certain skill to be destroyed, so you can't get away with smashing everything as easily.

Holy, this game is addictive. I finished the Canyon area yesterday - played until 3am. I can't even remember the last time this happened, maybe with Visions of Mana?
Still have a couple of fossils and bananas to find, but even I know when to stop for the night, I'm glad today is a Sunday.

I know exactly what you mean, there is something so mesmerizing about digging the ground for bananas and fossils in this game.

When this game first announced, people thought the destruction mechanic was going get old……they were soooooo wrong….this shit never gets old.

Why is he eating rocks? Are they gems made out of bananas or bananas that just happened to be shaped like gems? I'm pretty sure he's just eating rocks. Oh well. I guess we're not supposed to think about it.

Tears of the Kingdom reference was pretty hilarious.
Id go further than just a ToTK reference. This whole game feels like ToTK wish fulfilment.

- Stylistic similarities between the first sky islands and Lagoon
- Climb as high as you want with no meter
- Smash through rather than find clever ways around/above something

Love it.

The Zelda references are everywhere. I just arrived in a level that is esthetically and thematically directly referencing one of the main regions in BotW. The game feels like some weird amalgation of the best things Nintendo's core teams produced this past decade. There's quite a bit of Splatoon in here too.

Definitely! In some sound design as well. I get Splatoon flashbacks every time I hear the guitar jingle when you get a new skill-point.

Can't put my finger on why, I think it might be reminiscent of the victory screen sound(s) in Splatoon.

I love the gold mini games they've done as you transition into another layer free falling in the tunnel

The one from canyon to the split path layer was surprising because the tunnel walls were made of sand and donkey can just enter it like a worm from dune and there's gold hidden in there everywhere

Imagine a TotK mod where you play as DK

They said this was a 20-ish hour game. I'll probably be around 30 for the main story, but finding everything will take AGES.

Yep, it's nearly identical.

How do I see how long I've played a game on Switch?
In the Nintendo Switch (phone) app you can just press on your profile picture and you'll get to the "Play activity" list.

I assume it's something similar on the Switch 2 itself.

Nice. I've already got 16 hours in this game and I'm still in the canyon layer.

Thanks.

I'm still at the Lagoon Layer collecting the last fossils and bananas. If I proceed the story, will I be able to return whenever I want to finish collecting the last stuff or should I collect everything before going forward?

Stupid GameFAQs threads spoiling the exact number of bananas. Instead of being impressed, I was frustrated that I had it ruined for me. (but it is impressive)

You can return to previous stages/layers.

I'm afraid all the constant rumble of the smashing plus the elephant vacuum is gonna destroy the rumble motors of the switch 2 pro controller. Might turn it to off to spare it.

I just unlocked my second bananza form (went to the snow/lava chocolate? area first so that's the zebra)... it's worth investing in the extra bananza duration skill just to hear the transformation themes longer, I love the two I've heard so far! Or, you know, hope you get the records and listen to them in your house, but those things are rarer than Cranky Kong in a good mood.

A lot of us were excited for this game, but no one saw this coming. Just so much fun and amazing to see nintendo draw ideas from their other franchises.

Now that I think about it.... Why are we even collecting the bananas in this game?
There is no threshold for progression... A bunch of them are "story" ones.. But what for the million others?
Just for upgrades?

Anyone else bothered by the fact that the ground "smashes" before Donkey Kong even touches it?
Here is a video I recorded that shows that. I thought I was crazy at first so had to slow it down to check. Minor issue in the long run and I can almost ignore it now.

I also love that many layers also require you to return to them after you've acquired certain skills and transformations. I've heard the Post-game content for this is just as great as Super Mario Odyssey!

Shockwaves bro. Extremely fast objects (like bullets or meteors) compress air in front of them, creating shockwaves. These waves can hit the ground first, causing damage before the object hits.

I finished it yesterday. Been revisiting levels to find fossils and gems but I don't think I'll go on. I already finished it so this feels pointless to collect things now.

Ah, I was considering that but, didn't think they'd care about that kind of detail in this game, and wasn't exactly sure if that really was a thing, but you've clarified that. I think it would feel better on impact but it looks like it is just me so, I suppose not.

Ask an ape WHY he collects bananas?

What a fucking joke mario kart world turned out to be.

This game is amazing.
Not as good as astrobot but certainly good

So does the second level not have a sub level? I dove down into the pit you unlock and it appears to have led me to the next level. Unless this is the sub level. But in the first area you could use those cannons to shoot yourself back up to the top level, but that isn't the case here so I'm guessing it's a new level entirely, but maybe not.

I love mkw but this game is just truly something special

This is better but this will likely be my goty. apples and oranges though. Mkw is one of the only multiplayer online games I enjoy.

From what I've played of Astro bot, this game is much better IMO

MK World is a better game than Astrobot by virtue of having more depth than a teaspoon.

Bananza isn't even in the same realm, it's like comparing Horizon and BotW.

The later you get in this game, getting all the collectibles will take a very long time

I'm curious how long it's gonna take people to 100% this game, including records, getting all the bananas in each challenge, etc

Then there's terrain destruction challenges for each layer

I can see this taking an insane amount of time

Huh? I loved MKW. The courses have a good mix of classic and new and have tons of alternate paths and ways to take advantage of the new wall riding and rail grinding skills (DK Spaceport is a work of art imo). The number of track combinations, including the open world paths is almost infinite! Also it's extremely fun when playing with family and friends.

Not sure how the game is a "joke" but keep in mind it's a racing game at its core. There's only so much they can do with exploration, and it's their first attempt at open world. Forza Horizon has had 5 games worth of experience to nail it down...and let's not pretend like this game isn't going to get at least 3 years worth of DLC content.
