There's a thread on gaming side, but I figured it'd fit here too.

Who best to start a new IP for Neal Moritz’s Original Film (Fast and Furious) than the IP Man himself? Martial artist Donnie Yen is set to star in a new feature from Moritz entitled Sleeping Dogs, which is based on the top-selling video game by Square Enix.

Yen, who recently co-starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, follows an undercover police officer (Yen) on a mission to take down one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the notorious Triads. The movie based on an action video game is set in Hong Kong and focuses on martial arts fighting, racing, boat chases … and shooting while doing all of that.

The movie will be a fan favorite, but not a total sucess.
A sequel will be made in a different genre and go straight to DVD/BR.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Donny is too short and lithe to be a convincing Wei Shen.

Oh good, the Fast and Furious guy. Plenty of stupid car stunts to pad the film out, at least. They are going to ruin this, aren't they

Everything from the funeral to the credits in Sleeping Dogs was amazing, hope they just lift that completely, scene for scene

Fantastic. To see Yen, a massive Asian action star, to be put front and center on a western US film that could be a potential-franchise is huge not just for him but for minorities in general. This thing could have easily been white-washed staring Mark Wahlberg or something.

Now please get a director that understands how to shoot martial arts. That's the missing link.

does Donnie Yen deserve to cash a lucrative Hollywood paycheck for his own action franchise?

yes, yes he does.

Donnie in the lead also increses the chance that he'll have a hand in the fight scene choreography, of which he's very good at, and in recent years has turned more towards MMA style grappling in films he's directing his own fight scenes for. And hell, he's about the same age as Keanu, and he just put out the action film to beat for 2017. So yeah, high hopes for this one.

I love Donnie Yen, a Sleepy Dawgs movie sounds good to me, and maybe this could mean that the game franchise might rise from the grave and we could potentially get a legit sequel? Fantastic news for me.

Will watch just cause of the name. Also it seems I need to check out Special ID.

Would love if this somehow caused Square Enix to commission a sequel from another studio

So was Will Yun Lee busy or some shit?

Because he was the voice actor and model for for Wei Shen.

Will Yun Lee didn't appear in two wildly successful action movies that played well across both US & China.

Hopefully they'll give him a role, but you can't expect him to get the lead by default. For similar reasons, I highly doubt Emma Stone is going to appear in this movie.

But just think, she can be in for all of 5 minutes and get top billing!

"And featuring Academy Award winner..."

I hope he isnt in the main role. They need someone american, or british with an american accent.

But I can see why they wouldnt if theyre banking on the international box office.
