Doom (2016) PC performance thread

I have a gtx 960 2 gb card and it doesn't matter what the settings are. My frame rate barely nudges unless I lower the resolution to 720p. However, if I turn off AA my frame rate actually LOWERS to 30 fps. Weird. Being a PC gamer is difficult sometimes. I was having a blast playing the game before I became curious about my fps. Now I'm obsessed with trying to raise my frame rate, even though I didn't care before I seen lol.

I have the same issue as you. There's seems to be some kind of bug with 960 cards. I saw users on reddit and the steam forum having the same problem.

The really weird thing about this is that changing the settings from, let's say, high to low does next to nothing. It's like it doesn't even matter.

Sorry if it's been answered, but how do you uncap the frame rate? I can't get it above 60. I have a 144hz G-Sync monitor.

Try these cvars in the console:

com_maxfps 144
r_swapinterval 0
r_displayrefresh 144
vid_restart

It may not take effect in the menus themselves. I had to load up a game.

Is anyone else getting the 'slow motion, underwater' feel on low spec machines?

I am running on this laptop:
Haswell i7 2.5 gHz
750M 2GB
16GB

At 720p with LOW I am getting about 23fps but it feels super laggy and unplayable.
1080p is 16fps and literally unplayable because of the lag.

This can't be right...

com_maxfps is considered an "unknown command."

r_swapinterval 0 seemed to do nothing. Neither did r_displayrefresh 144.

vid_restart seemed to work, but still capped at 60.

have you tried disabling the ingame Vsync?

Of course. Even tried going into the Nvidia Control Panel and forcing it off, and forcing on G-Sync on a per-application basis.

Press the button on your monitor to change it to 144hz whilst in-game.

"the button?"

Make sure your desktop refresh rate is the same as the one you want ingame, then press alt+enter ingame two times to switch from windowed and back.
If that doesn't work try switching between borderless and fullscreen.

Thanks! So, I'm able to get up to 144 fps in Windowed mode (with the border), but it's capped at 60 in fullscreen and borderless windowed :(

Sucks that I have to have the window borders, but holy shit this game feels a ton better running at 100+ fps with mouse smoothing off.

1) Did you check it is using correct GPU, discrete rather than integrated?
2) 750M is weaker than GTX 670 which is the minimum for the game.

This sucks.

Strange, is your desktop resolution the same as your ingame res? If not try setting both the desktop refresh rate and resolution to match ingame.

Have you tried.. umm.. actually starting up the campaign? Not trying to be a smartass but asking because my FPS were locked to 60 on the main menu before actually loading up a level.

Edit: Looks like you did judging by your other post.

I enabled the stats overlay and I am clearly CPU limited in a lot of areas even with my 4.4GHz i7 4770K when I try and reach 120FPS.

Definitely hope Vulkan will help push those frames higher (and going by that Vulkan demo they showed a while back that certainly looks possible).

Here was the difference for me between low and ultra presets, CPU limited on both settings. I'm guessing it's the draw calls or something holding it back? http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/172935

Using this RockPaperShotgun's guide how to disable mouse smoothing and intro isn't working for me. No, I didn't add the "" in launch options.

Add space and 1 after the intro disabling line. RPS forgot that for some reason.

Also, you probably need to add mouse smoothing thing to CFG file as well.
Though i swear there's no difference even after adding both launch and CFG lines for disabling mouse smoothing...

Something we should bother them about on Twitter. Just patch it into the in-game options. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, both set to 1080p. Never encountered anything like this before.

guys the game is worth for a single player experience? Or should i jump to buy it with the season pass that it almost has a price of a full game (and is fully orientated to MP)

Looking for some insight before I take the plunge.

i7 4820K @ 3.7 GHz
16 GB DDR3
GTX 760 MSI 2GB OC

How does GAF think it'll stack up?

Wireless xbox one controller doesn't seem to be working at all. When I press a button it recognizes the controller and switches to the controller GUI but none of the buttons do anything.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem.
Solution:
Device manager, right click on Xbox wireless controller, troubleshoot, let it do its thing, should say there was a usb issue.

For some reason I have two of those now: fixed!

6600k @ 4.2, 16 gigs ram, xfx 390. Was running okay (50 - 100 fps) but today I've had three hard crashes. Not sure whats going on but a patch (especially for us AMD users) would be great.

Similar setup but MSI Gaming R9 390.

Have had 2 crashes total but can't think of them as anything else than random crashes.

(Framerate between 40 (certain areas when they have a lot of demons as well) and 120+, usually around 60 to 80.)

Can't progress past the end of the 5th level
Argent Energy Tower.
At the end of the sequence I get stuck at a black screen forever. Has happened 4 times and persisted after a reboot (other forums suggested that). Any other ideas?

edit: fixed it but now I'm getting CTDs. Sigh

Posted this in the OT not realizing this topic existed, so hopefully I can get some answers here. Keep in mind I was out of PC gaming for about 3 years so I am brushing up on what can be done, and truth is I did not do a whole lot back when I did game religiously on the PC. Just the basic stuff, and never did what I am asking about below with different profiles? I realized after posting that question can I just use GE Force Experience to switch the profile between SP and MP easily? I just prefer a higher frame rate in the MP, somewhere around 90 would be sweet, so am going to have to lower some graphical settings from what is setup in SP.

Anyway here is the post...
Finally got to check it out. Runs great with pretty much everything at Ultra and 2160 res. Getting in the area of 75 FPS and since I have G-Sync that is good enough for me in SP.

So my question for those that have played both MP & SP already on PC can the two have different Graphic settings? Or are the settings universal for both? If they are universal which I believe they are, is there a tool I may not know about that creates different profiles for games easily? Like Profile Inspector or whatever it is called?

Also I hope bumping up the FOV (which I just did before stopping playing so I cannot confirm) will help with the motion sickness I somewhat feel. I have NEVER felt it from gaming so it is kind of crazy I feel like I am experiencing it now, but doing a quick Google shows me that a decent amount of people experienced it in Wolfenstein, so it appears it may be something with the RAGE engine?

Real solid game so far though. Some of these secrets must be really well hidden too as I am looking for them no doubt and not finding all of them. Only on Level 3 too.

i7-920, 12GB RAM, EVGA GTX 760 2GB using 365.19 NVIDIA drivers. All options set to HIGH, 16x10 - 1920x1200. FPS is flucating from high 40's to 50's but feels buttery smooth (feels like steady 60+ fps even during hectic events).

Uh, so I've had two crashes to desktop since I installed the latest Nvidia drivers.

On the one hand, 10% performance increase. On the other, can't play the game 100% always... This is twice in like 3 hours but still, vaguely annoying.

Thanks, I'll be checking it out in a few hours. Kinda unrelated but I've been playing Mad Max recently with all of the settings maxed out @ 1080 and the house didn't burn down. In fact, the only recently released title I've had problems with was XCOM 2, and we all know how that game was at release.

And that's a third hard crash. Going to try playing without an OC and see if that helps - weird since the last Nvidia driver was rock stable with my overclock.

100% what I'm talking about. It makes virtually no difference unless I lower the resolution. I hope its fixed soon. What fps do you usually have? I seem to hove in the mid 40's. It's definitely playable, but I don't get why my fps wouldn't be higher if I dropped my settings to medium.

1) Did you check it is using correct GPU, discrete rather than integrated?
2) 750M is weaker than GTX 670 which is the minimum for the game.

My 460M is even weaker than that and I get at least 30fps at 720p on average in Low settings (I'm constantly between ~20 - 60+ fps during the whole game, mostly somewhere in the mid to high 40s).
There must be something wrong on his part.

EDIT: BTW, is it only on my game that I sometimes hop a few feet forward whenever I'm about to use Melee on an enemy?
I had it several times now that I tried using Melee on an enemy while running towards him (the enemy was not glowing for Glory Kill, though) and my guy suddenly warps a few feet forward and behind the enemy. It's getting really annoying, especially in hectic fight scenes :(

This game keeps minimizing to desktop every few hours. Anyone having similar issues?

It's not a huge problem, as the game actually enters the pause menu while doing so. Still kinda annoying.

It's going to take a little while to discover the cvars you want to change, but broadly speaking this is how you can do these things in idtech games.

Create two cfg files in %userprofile%\Saved Games\id Software\DOOM\base. For example mp.cfg and sp.cfg.
Add the respective cvars you want into each cfg. For example:

Code:
r_dof "0"
r_mode "17" //1920x1080
g_fov "100"
m_smoothing "0"
r_antialiasing "5"
vid_restart

In the above folder there is a DOOMconfig.cfg. Edit it and at the end add:
bind "F8" "exec mp.cfg"
bind "F9" "exec sp.cfg"

In the game, pressing F8 will load your multiplayer config and F9, your single player config.

My other rig has a 960 4GB, locked 60fps at high settings, 1080p, didn't try ultra but might be good enough to play.

I'm running almost everything on ultra at 1080P, except shadows and particles at high. Game seems relatively heavy on the CPU (why?), even with my i7 6700K the frametime hovers around 16.66 even in non intrusive scenes and can go up a few ms during heavy combat. Does that seem right? is this game really CPU heavy? Doesn't really make sense that CPU time would hover right at the edge (for 60FPS) in non intrusive scenes even with one of the best gaming CPUs out there.

My GPU on the other hand (GTX780 factory overclocked 30-35% or so) is the one that can go from 8-10ms in non intrusive scenes to 18-22ms in heavy combat in large area with particles. But it's an aging GPU so it's understandable, Vulkan should push it to 60FPS constant but I guess by the time it comes out I will be done with the game.

Same boat on my PC. Yeah, i think Vulkan will clear up a lot of COU bottlenecks.

5820k
980ti
2560x1440

Everything on Ultra (TXAA x8 or w/e the max option is) and I get about 100fps. Having never really played a Doom game before it feels and plays so good.

As a comfy couch gamer mostly : how is gamepad support on PC?

Same as consoles.
I think all the controller settings from consoles are here and aim assist can be turned on/off.

I've tried with aim assist off, felt pretty good. Even made a video to show that I could jump/hop around/strafe and shoot quite well despite using controller and no aim assist hah.
