Doom (2016) PC performance thread

SLI owners - the last Nvidia driver added SLI profile in there and it has worse performance than single, at least for me. I had to go in NVCP and force single GPU. Don't know why they did that. Maybe they're getting ready for the next Doom SLI patch.

Probably, I remember the devs saying that the next patch would have brought SLI.

Still waiting.

Just got a random CoD, but this one asked me a series of questions (and how to reproduce, if needed). In any case, I was able to report it due to the pop-up (which claims it was the engine that crashed).

I just upgraded to Windows 10(free upgrade). Where before I had almost consistent 60fps in DOOM, I'm getting drops to the 30s and 40s with no explanation. MSI afterburner is showing 50% CPU and 80% GPU when these drops happen. Any ideas?

Edit disabling VSync helped, but now I have tearing.

Did you try a fresh install of drivers for your video card?

Upgrade sucks. You pretty much have to do a clean Win10 install after the first upgrade (your PC config is stored in the activation server during the upgrade hence it's necessary to perform it once; after that you can just install the Win10 afresh and it will activate by itself).

Just a quick clarification.

Its my understanding that gaming on border less window, automatically enables triple buffering (its a windows thing, right?). So I should just need to enable border less window on doom, then cap the frame rate to 60 fps and enable vsync on driver panel right? In short, no need to force triple buffering in the driver panel, since border less window does that automatically right?

Sort of. Using borderless windowed mode doesn't force triple buffering at an application level, but at an operating system level. This means that if you enable V-sync with borderless windowed mode turned on, you'll still get the 30/60 FPS lock that you get in fullscreen mode. To take advantage of the Windows' built in triple buffering, you need to leave V-sync in the application disabled. Then limit your frame rate to 60 (or 59, I find that helps frame pacing in some games).

I should note that the above technique doesn't work at all in DOOM, you'll still get screen tearing in borderless windowed mode if you leave V-sync disabled. It's an OpenGL game, so the easiest way to get triple buffering in-game is to force it though the Nvidia control panel (or equivalent AMD software).

Forcing triple buffering via AMD settings currently not working either, at least not with the 2 drivers I've tried (16.5.2.1 and 16.5.3).

So im getting this weird issue with performance. I'm running a 970 and on install i was running the game perfectly. But after i while i can only run the game at 40-50 fps and changing the settings does nothing. But if I do a fresh driver install i shoot back up to 60fps. But upon booting up my pc the next day, i go back to the lower fps and have to repeat the process. Any ideas what the hell is going on?

Was getting like second long freezes apart from the Vsync issue. I did a fresh install of Windows 10 and still get terrible frame rates with Vsync enabled, but the freezing is gone. I guess I should give my system although I think it's just an AMD Windows 10/OGL driver issue most likely.

6600K@4.4GHz
7970@1GHz
16GB DDR4@3GHz

Everything else is running fine or at least the same as Windows 7. Can't wait for Vulkan.

Off Topic: Being able to download a bootable USB from Microsoft is awesome. I got an 8.1 USB for my daughters laptop and it pulled the product code from it's bios and installed all drivers transparently.
I took a picture of the product ID on my PC before using the Windows 10 USB and put it in with zero issues. Installing Windows has never been easier.

What the fuck?? :-/

could be a heat issue with your GPU. Are you running open hardware monitor? Can you check your card's temps during gameplay?

So playing the Doom E3 demo, and my performance really sucked. 380x with latest driver, 3570k at 4.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM and using the LOW preset with NO AA with 1080p and the game kept locking at 30 fps because it couldn't maintain a constant 60 hardly ever. So very disappointed right now, I didn't think my system sucked that badly. :(

EDIT: Well, Crimson Power Efficiency was turned on after the driver update, so I turned that off... and performance is much better now! Phew...

Just played through the demo, so awesome.
i5 2500k is fine for 120hz, but on 970 i had to stick to 1080p and mostly high for around 100fps.
--edit--
i5 2500k is not fine for 120hz! I checked shadowplay recording and i'm actually slightly cpu limited in denser situations, gpu stays at 9ms, but cpu goes up to 11ms.
Yep, postponing buying this until new system with 6800k.

Pistol is great at least on PC, on console i would probably hate it :P
I'm still not convinced on finishers, even though they are pretty fast and nice, are quite required for hp sustain and ammo conservation. I would prefer to normal melee was available instead of finisher for even faster close-up kills.

Someway, somehow, Doom 2016 runs on my 560Ti. When Bethesda announced the free demo I downloaded it, mostly just for a laugh and to dream of how good it will be on my new video card in August. Instead I find with the default demo settings of 1080p, high details, lighting, etc, I'm getting 22 fps on a 560Ti. If I lower to 720p it's 30 fps during slowdowns and often 45-55 fps... and I didn't even lower any other settings yet. Played through the whole demo exploring as much as possible. Obviously not gaming nirvana, but I was genuinely surprised that it worked. Wizards I tell you, wizards!

Finished the demo earlier. 80 - 120fps with everything set to max at 1080p. It looks and runs great.

3570k @ 4GHz, GTX 970, 8GB DDR3, SSD, Win10

Has anyone else noticed weird frame rate issues going past 1080p on a 4K display? When I run 1080p I got a rock solid 60fps that looks buttery smooth but when I go up to 1440 even the the counter says 60-70fps he actual frame rates look jumpy and sub 30. I tried full screen and border less and all the vsync settings but nothing seems to work.

Yes. SLI 970 FTWs don't seem to be giving me more than 45-55 fps at 1440p ultra, where as I'm seeing benches with 60 average on a single 970?

4K was in the teens..

Game runs great on GTX 970 and 3570, but i can't set highest shadow setting (which requires freaking 5gb of vram), minor issues but still bothers me.

So I recently upgraded from 955BE Phenom II to i7 6700k. Stayed with a 6950 2GB, I was getting better performance on the Phenom II- solid 30fps on med-high. Both hardware had higher utilization, now my gpu doesn't crack 60% - before it was 90%+. no matter what setting of detail I'm on now, it doesn't crack 21-22 fps. I could be on high and have 22, same area with a fresh restart to low settings would also get 22 fps.

I completely understand that the game is highly gpu-limited, but don't understand why performance is worse with a CPU that is ~3 times more powerful.

FOLLOWUP: so i kind of solved my own problem, i did a clean install of windows 10 and have slightly better performance than when I had a phenom II. I'm more amazed at how much doom doesn't care about the cpu.

So I wanted to play the demo but it's capped at 60fps? I can't find any uncap setting in the game settings, Vsync is off, tried fullscreen/windowed/borderless. I run a 1440p/144hz monitor and my desktop is set to 144hz.

Not sure what's wrong, I've seen people play it beyond 60 happily :(

E: nvm... it's only locked to 60 in the menu. Weird but whatever.

Downloaded the demo and having a blast!

Anyone else having weird frame pacing issues though? I get 60-70fps on a mix of medium, high and ultra settings but the visuals never seem to truly appear smooth as if there are completely random frame times, with or without in-game vsync enabled. Control response is perfect.

Specs: 970m 3GB, i7 6700hq, 16gb DDR4, w10, latest drivers installed.

Question for you all, just bought the game after beating it on PS4. I figured my PC wouldn't be able to run it that well it's a older setup with a 660 TI and a overclocked i5 that's only at 3.0 (it's about 5 years old) with 8 gigs of ram.

The demo ran very well at high with shadows on low and AA set to FXAA. I beat the demo three times (adore this game lol) and finally decided to double dip. Well I got to the second level and now the framerate is tanking down to the 20s in some areas. I need to go back and do some tweaking, I set it all to Medium and it didn't seem to make much of a difference, only netting me another 10fps overall in SOME areas. But overall still chugging badly.

What do you all think are some of the harder performance hitting advanced settings that I could turn down to low or medium and hopefully get me back to mostly 60fps?

This really makes me want to buy a 970 but I want to hold out to do a whole new build next year.

With my 680, I've got everything on Low and getting around 50fps. If I crank everything up, it's around 30. Seems that I can either play it the way it's meant to play, or the way it's meant to look, but not both.

no one has issues with gsync? just tried the demo and with vsync set to off the fps was like 80 with tearing :/ on gives massive vsync lag, adaptive seemed better, it needs to be set to adaptive to work? got gsync set to fullscreen and windowed on 368.39 drivers

happy to see it runs at 4k60 on a 1080, gpu usage isn't even close to 100 with max settings (in the demo, dunno if full game has more?) bar motion blur and only smaa

G-sync works fine for me, but I'm sub-60. Not sure if that makes a difference, though.

I'd suggest double-checking your G-sync settings. I've had it spontaneously turn itself off before, especially after a driver update.

4670k @ 4.5, 980ti, 16gb ram, 1440p, all settings maxed. I played for roughly 30 minutes of the demo, I never dropped below 60. Environments didn't look too taxing though so we'll see where this game goes. Right now I'm pretty pleased with performance.

Unlocked framerates in menus can CTD games. When there's nothing to render, you'll get framerates into the several 100s if not 1000s.

Has there been any improvement on the crashes to desktop? I tried to play a couple weeks ago because I wanted to clean up some challenges and it did it again.

Do you have the refresh rate of your monitor set to the max setting (I'm assuming 144hz)? I had this problem the other night too, but changing the refresh rate of my monitor to 144hz from 60hz fixed this immediately in DOOM.

I am just waiting for that patch including the dev mode fix. Not touching the game before again. :(

Tried the demo.

Welp, gtx 770 + i3570 and I can't get constant 60fps even on low.

Off to ps4 I guess.

Have You tried the newest drivers? It seems strange that You cant get constant 60fps with that card.

I played through the game (and loved it) on my i5 3570k + GTX 970 and performance was rock solid. But the game crashed a few times, and when it crashed it took my whole PC with it. No way to CTL-ALT-DEL or Alt-F4 out of the game when it got in that state.

Has anyone else gotten any juddering/chugging camera movements starting in level 4 (Argent Tower)? The game has been butter smooth up until this point, but some angles I view very long draw distances I will notice the movement seems sluggish like the framerate is dropping, my framerate is capped at 60 and doesn't fall below that point, and frametimes are smooth when this happens with plenty of horsepower to spare on my 980Ti.

Lowering settings doesn't help and I've tried every combination I can think of with NVCP VSync/TB In-Game/VSync/Borderless and Full Screen modes. Also it seems to happen in the same spots every time. I haven't tried playing around with V-Sync off, but will get to that if it's something I can't rectify using VSync.

Just grabbed this during the Steam sale and while it runs very well on Ultra settings I'm finding the sound to be a bit lacking. I'm playing with headphones and it's very loud and punchy, which I like, but everything sounds like it's right next to my ears, even stuff that's far away. It's actually making combat a bit more difficult because I'm having trouble knowing where enemies are based on sound.

As far as I know I'm not running any third party EQ or any sound stuff in the Windows mixer, so I'm not really sure what I can try to fix it.

Edit: The more I read into this apparently that's just how the sound is? A bit disappointing having heard so much praise for the sound in this game.

That area is much more CPU limited than most. What is your CPU?

Picked up Doom during Steam Sales (although I bought it from Amazon)

Should I play it now 4K + lower some settings or wait for Vulkan?
