Q: WHAT THE HELL IS A DOTA?
A: Just get a key from your friend? Browsing Neogaf and happen upon this fateful thread, curious to see the treasures within? It’s OK! We’re here to help! Dota 2 is, essentially, one of the most competitive team-based multiplayer games ever to grace the videogame scene. It has RPG and RTS elements. It contains over 110+ heroes to choose from, each distinct in personality and playstyle. It has a ridiculously high skill cap. It’s a lot like League of Legends, but far more brutal and a great deal more satisfying. If you are new to this game, be warned – you WILL suck. This is not Team Fortress 2. The barrier to competence is long and frustrating. There’s a lot of information to absorb, a significant amount of it unintuitive. But sticking with the game is extremely rewarding. While you might experience the lowest lows of ever playing a game (ever been called every racist term in an hour of playing time by four other people?), it also has some of the highest highs. It’s worth the pain. Trust me.

So to those that are getting frustrated with Dota 2: Keep trying, I guarantee, you will love it once you get better at it. I never really hated it myself, even when I was terrible at it, but I have certainly gotten a lot better at the game. When you do learn it, you will find it incredibly fun to play. Don't bail out and say you're just going to stick to LoL, you CAN learn this game and be good at it. I certainly did.
The Neogaf Dota group is very helpful. Ask questions, ask a lot of them, and don’t be afraid to ask. We were all little newbies once!

First thing’s first. As soon as you boot up the game, join the Neogaf Noobs channel and the Reddit Noobs channel. They’ll assist you greatly and you’ll be able to find new players just like yourself to play with, along with more experienced players that can give you tips here and there.

Next, here’s a great list of useful links, mostly compiled by Reddit user belk. They’ll be more helpful to you than anything I can write. Because of the lack of ingame tutorials, I -highly- recommend you check some of these links out before getting your feet wet. Don't worry, there will be tutorials in the actual release version -- they're just not made yet!

Here is an awesome place to watch competitive Dota 2!

Put them to the easiest difficulty setting so you can ease your way into understanding the basic mechanics. Try out the heroes that you think look cool (all of the current heroes are posted in the next few posts). Here’s Milk’s recommended hero play for newbies:

Q: WHAT'S A CARRY?
A: Welcome to the big bosses of Dota 2. These are the "stars" of your team. Generally, they are fairly weak early game in comparison to other roles. However, with an appropriate amount of items, the carry can stand toe-to-toe with other heroes and kill them with raw auto-attack damage. Often times the carry has a spell or two that scales with gear, making them more powerful as the game goes on. This is contrasted by heroes who are strong early, such as supports and gankers. If you're NOT a carry, you will be doing everything in your power to help your carry, whether it's by protecting them (supports), killing the enemy (gankers), holding the enemy in place (initiators), or getting early gold through towers (pushers). There are several types of carries in the game:

  • AOE CARRIES carry the game through sheer aoe damage and spells
[*]PUSHER CARRIES carry the game through their ability to tear buildings apart in seconds
[*]TANKER CARRIES carry the game by soaking up an enormous amount of damage while dealing it back
[*]PURE CARRIES carry the game by unmatched right-click autoattack damage
[*]GANKER CARRIES have the ability to greatly assist in killing other heroes and get a lot of their gold from doing so before transitioning into autoattack carries. They do not scale as well as pure carries
Some of these heroes belong in more than one category; however, they are listed under their main asset.

GENERAL CARRY ADVICE

  • You need gold, and lots of it! Pures should concentrate solely on farming, pushers should farm until their core items are up, gankers should split time between killing and farming, tanks and aoes should join in kills and teamfights when possible.
  • Farm safely! Try to farm in lanes that are closest to your towers and mainbase; this will reduce the chances of the opposing enemies coming in and slaughtering you. Take care to look at your minimap for missing enemy heroes, and back off if you don't feel safe.
  • In teamfights, you want to focus down enemy supports, NOT enemy carries. Leave the carries for last -- they often can't do much without the support's disables.
  • Pick sniper. He's fucking awesome.
  • Generally, ganker carries want to end in midgame before pure carries take the lead late

Q: WHAT’S A SUPPORT?
A: Supports are the lifeblood of the team. While often times described as the wardbitch, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Supports will make or break your game. They’ll purchase all the necessary, team-oriented items such as couriers and wards. They’ll protect your farmers and enable your gankers. They’ll sacrifice their own farm for the good of the team. And their useful, item-independent skill set will make them a true asset in teamfights.

I’ve broken down supports into two categories: offensive supports, and defensive supports. Take note that this is a very, very general grouping. Most heroes can go either way – it’ll depend on your lane partner.

  • OFFENSIVE SUPPORTS are generally very aggressive in lane, choosing to assist your lane partner by bullying the enemy off of the creep wave (and often times even killing them!)
  • DEFENSIVE SUPPORTS are generally passive in lane, choosing to assist your lane partner by making them difficult to kill and dangerous to dive

GENERAL SUPPORT ADVICE

  • Often times, you want one or two supports in your team. One of you should start the game by purchasing a courier; the other should buy an observer ward.
  • Observer wards are one of the best items in the game. The ability to see ganks incoming and see heroes alone is priceless for your carries and gankers.
  • Even though you are a support and you will be sacrificing farm, you do need some gold to buy basic necessities such as magic wand, boots, and tps. It’s OK to ask your lane partner for a few creeps. It’s also OK to go pull the jungle creeps and farm them.

Q: WHAT’S A PUSHER?
A: Pushers do exactly as their name imply; push down buildings! Why do we want to push down buildings? One, it gives a lot of gold – around 250 gold per tower for every hero on your team. Two, it gives you more control of the map. Towers are a very safe place to hang around; they do a ton of damage and give a lot of vision. The less towers an enemy has, the more of the map your team is allowed to roam, and the less of the map the enemy can farm safely. Third, the whole point of the game is to kill the Ancient – which, unsurprisingly, is a building!

Keep in mind that there are no “pure” pushers in the game. The term “pusher” is more of an adjective that is used in conjunction with other roles. Chen and Enchantress, for example, are mainly supports. Leshrac and Pugna are teamfighters. Shadow Shaman is a ganker.

Q: WHAT’S AN INITIATOR?
A: When midgame and lategame rolls around, the opportunity to gank off a sole hero drops dramatically. During these stages of the game, 5v5 fights are what are most common. The initiator’s job is to enter the fight first, locking down and dealing massive AOE damage to the enemy team. This paves the way for the rest of your team to cleanup. Staying back and waiting for the perfect moment to jump is the staple initiator way.

Q: WHAT’S A GANKER?
A: Do you like to KILL people? Does the sight of +250 gold and the cries of a dying ginger make you giddy on the inside? Then the ganker is for you. Gankers excel at murdering enemy heroes to control enemy gold intake, to obtain map control, to indirectly protect your carry, and to allow pushes to occur safely. More often than not, the ganker takes up one of the solo lanes to allow a heavy level advantage going into the early and midgame. The ganker is a key element in any team composition. Note that offensive supports are often gankers themselves, they do not typically take up a solo lane like those in the "ganker" category do.

Aren't OT's only supposed to be 1 post now?

I'm not asking to get anybody in trouble, more on just whether that's actually a rule or not. This thread isn't nearly as bloated as the other multi-post OTs, not sure how you could shrink it to one.

Damn I'm pretty high up there.

I don't even remember what I talked about in that thread.

Question: shouldn't Death Prophet be also listed under Support as a Pusher as well? Right now she's under tank/carry. Is that the best way to think of her?

Also, this game will also have an OSX client. It should probably be include in the top of the OP, no? With an addendum like "coming soon"?

God guys, way to fuck things up.

Also I must say its funny not seeing Necrolyte under tank. I've never really seen the aoe carry description used.

DP is fine, I'd say. There are going to be questions when you place heroes with multiple roles / different play styles in very specific groups but generally it's a pretty good list.

She can push, but that's not her main role IMO. The thing is, with enough tank items, you simply can't fight her when she uses her ultimate -- the ghosts do too much single-target damage. Definitely do not player her as a support, you will feed, and you will not be useful.

Also currently the beta only supports PC, but I can put OSX in there too just to clarify.

The problem is that many of these heroes have multiple roles. But it might also be confusing if you have heroes under multiple labels. Like invoker is basically every role in one playstyle or another.

understood, gentlemen!

So I started digging into this game a couple days ago after not really 'getting' it a couple of months ago. I think I might be hooked.

Same exact thing happened to me. Took me almost a month to come around and actually start playing. I mostly blame SWTOR (what a waste of time...)

OC - I'm slowly changing out all the hero portraits with yours. It's taking a while because matching each portrait of yours with mine is a pain in the ass when looking at just links (although Conceptor has been generous enough to help me out with it). You'll get credit when I finish swappin' them

Was waiting for this for awhile :3

What's up with the invite ban thing, is that still in effect? I saw invites being talked about in the last few pages of the last OT. Can a mod clarify if that's still in effect? Just don't want to get banned for talking about invites...

I was #5 in the old thread? Jebus. Good jorb on the new!

Played Necrolyte yesterday, tried out building a Rod of Atos. It worked out really well, felt much more able to get into the middle of teamfights to get maximal Heartstopper burn and Death Pulse spammage. Having the disable on hand to cripple fleeing enemies was also quite useful.

Well, since the game was just confirmed free to play a few hours ago, should we put that tidbit in the OP?

Getting cravings for dota 2 again. Need to build new PC as soon as exams are done. Nice OT again.

Same thing I plan on doing as soon as I find a new job. Seriously, I could live playing only this game, for the rest of my life. Ok, not entirely true. I really do miss it.

GJ Milk.
I've got a few friends who just got in, I will be directing them to the BootsFirst-sponsored-Newbie-Zone for sure.

All of Euro-HoN-GAF survived too Anbokr. We just direct all of our reel tawk at Meteorain and Sanjay, so theres no backlash.
