Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Since today some games i just can't connect to the game at all ( wont work even if i reconnect ).. forcing my team to play 4v5... why does it start the game when somebody cant connect?? Is this happening to anybody else?

First game, had to go into ranked. And I seem to got a pretty good game for breaking the cherry. Went with Dazzler as a support. Went 3/4/6. Most Denies, and about 20 less creep kills than the highest.(Before you yell, the one I was supporting clearly didn't know how to last hit or deny).

They ended up winning, lot stronger burst on their team which would wreck our team sadly enough.

-Very clean and thick. Bit slower than I expected though, compared to both HoN and LoL.
-I still get lost with the store. I don't understand these recipes and I end up seeming to just buy stuff on the recommended list with no idea what I bought lol.
-Active items, which buttons are they?

Clearly still in beta with lots of features missing and some confusing aspects with the UI, but it should improve.

It also runs sooooo very sexy on my new PC *Braggart*

I think I can clear up Recipes.

Do you know how in League of Legends, you have to pay to combine two items into one item? In dota, you do this by buying Recipes. Some items don't require recipes to combine, and the biggest advantage is that you can have the Courier bring them too you still.

Active items by defalut are the numpad, don't be afraid to change some binding.

The biggest problem I'm having in transitioning is the relative value of things and the relative power in items.

Is 10 INT a lot? A little? Ok? Is that worth spending 200 gold? 400?

Is 300 a lot of gold, or is 900 a lot? 2000?

An ability consumes 100 mana at level 1. Is that a problem for a bruiser? A mage? A carry?

Also, random bugs don't help. I didn't have health bars until 5 minutes into the game :(

Do GAFfers play together?

It's quite a bit, but it won't solve your mana problems if you're having trouble casting stuff. Go for Soul Ring, Arcane Boots or Ring of Basilus.

300 is not very much, 900 is average, 2000 is quite a bit, 3000 is a lot.
The most expensive non-recipe item is 3800.

That will be a problem for every hero (moreso for STR and AGI than INT), unless you're packing mana regen in the form of spells or clarity potions.

Your best bet is to get into Mumble, you can ask questions on the fly, it's a lot better then just going through a match blind and asking questions after.

In terms of the value and power, as far as gold goes, sitting on your gold is generally a bad idea, because any item that you buy is going to help you, compared to gold in your inventory being detrimental because you lose it on death. There are very few situations where it's good to pool it, and those really only occur in the late game BB scenarios ( I had a Spectre game where I constantly pooled 7k gold so I could buy all components of an item at once, and still have enough to Buy Back ).

How much is a lot of something, depends on how much you have, if your farming very well 1000 gold won't be worth as much in comparison to if your not farming well, 100 mana may not be worth much, if you have clarities or a way to replenish it ( Void Stone etc. )

Generally, you'll get an understanding of value as you play the heroes more, you'll learn which heroes have somewhat spammable spells ( lich ) and which are high mana high reward ( Skeleton King ). In Dota and HoN though, auto attacks have a lot more value in the early game stages then Mana skills, for most heroes.

The only way to really measure the value of items or the cost of spells is to see them in relation to other things.

Like, for instance with Skeleton King, your stun costs about 140 mana and your mana pool at level 1 is about 190. So, that costs a shitton of mana at the start of the game.

Same for items. Slippers of Agility are worth 150 gold and give you 3 Agi (which corresponds to a little bit of attack speed, a little armor and 3 attack damage if your hero is an Agility hero), the Blade of Alacrity is worth 1000 gold and gives you 10 Agi, Eaglesong is worth 3300 gold and gives you 25 Agi. There is a similar progression for Strengh and Intelligence items as well. With some items, it's more tricky because of their usable abilities (like Blink Dagger, which costs 2150 gold, gives you no stats, but the ability to teleport for small distances)

Also, Viper is awesome. Had the best farming in Dota 2 so far on him when I went solo mid two games ago. Laned against a pretty mediocre Lion who basically let me free-farm. The enemy team's Jakiro left fairly early on, so it was 5v4 for most of the time but I got up to 60 last hits after 17 minutes when the rest of the enemy team left. Probably not all that great but I was very happy with that, Viper's animation makes it pretty easy too.

Played Veno and he's extremely fun. Hard to pull off a good ult though because everyone starts focusing you. Anyone want to recommend me any other champions?

Lich is pretty awesome and easy to play if you haven't tried him yet. Max your frost nova and dark ritual so you can spam all day, and eat the creeps in your lane.

If you don't have health bars then just restart the client.
When I play Dazzle I follow the recommended build pretty closely and it works well most of the time.

Boots, Magic Wand, Power Treads, Urn of Shadows, Mekansm is my usual build. Mekansm will give everyone around you armor, as will your ult (if you actually hit them with it). After that I go Scythe of Vyse if the game lasts long enough.

I'll also get a Soul Ring early on if I'm doing really poorly on mana (i.e., if the enemy in my lane is being super aggressive). It's usually not an issue.

You should get a Soul Ring on Dazzle as core.

I usually get a mixture of Wand, Soul Ring, Basi, Mek, Treads and then probably an Euls as the game shouldn't last long enough to get a Sheep.

You should get a Soul Ring on Dazzle as core.

Why, when I don't need it half the time?

If the lane isn't being aggressive, then I don't need to heal constantly. If I don't need to heal constantly, I don't run out of mana. If I don't run out of mana...

By the time I get to the team fight stage in those situations, I already have treads, and urn, and I'm halfway to a Mekansm. Well, that's a really good game with lots of early ganks. Normally, I just have the urn.

There are times when you'll run out of mana and using the soul ring is the difference between your carry dying as losing the team fight and getting that grave/heal on him and winning. It's also good for farming a lane as you just pop the ring and heal yourself. I'd let a proper ganker/roamer get an Urn than a babysitter like Dazzle.

You should be using your heal to make sure your carry is never in much danger, and also to harass in the lane if you're against melee.

But if I'm not running out of mana... If the game is going rough, then I'm going to get it, because it's cheap, and it'll help out. If the game is going good, there's considerably less reason to get it.

I let someone else get the urn if they go for it, but if no one does, then I might as well. Dazzle's pretty good at getting lots of assists, so I usually get to stack it up pretty high.

Tried Queen of Pain yesterday. The guide I used recommended leveling scream and blink till 4 then touching the first ability(can't remember name). Kind of felt like I couldn't do much after blinking in and hitting with the scream.

Anyone have any tips?

start kiting them. The cooldown on scream is so short that you should be able to scream them again, which should be a kill on most players within the level 7-9 era. (she's a good solo, so you should be higher level than most players if you play her that way)

1. Blink 2. Scream 3. Scream 4. Dagger 5. Scream 6. Ultimate 7. Scream 8 9 10 dagger.

Skill Build Above does a ton of damage and you can use Dagger as a finisher, I wouldn't suggest Blinking in as it's your only escape and QoP is really squishy before Linkens, but she does a lot of auto damage so fill the CD of your scream with those.
If you're never running out of mana then you're doing something wrong.
I tried playing Dazzle as Solo pusher / Aura Bitch, was such a fun game, 397 GPM, pushed 3 towers down solo, was unkillable cause I had so much armor.

I personally prefer playing a tanky build with Dazzle. Arc boots/meka/aghanims scepter. His ult is ridiculously underrated.

But I'm not much of a support player so don't take my word for it.

Man gutted about that GAF game then. Threw the kitchen sink followed by the fucking kitchen at that game. Twas fun though even if our team did range from BRB GOING PRO to I have no idea what I'm doing right now.

I was certainly on the latter end of that scale
ty to creative and tyrant for dragging us kicking and screaming through that game. :p

One mistake I always make, over and over and over, because I'm terrible, is using my ult immediately after my nuke instead of before.

Luckily the cooldown is short enough that I can get another one of pretty soon after that, but still.

I just got in. I feel so cheap playing Riki but he just kills people so easily. Is there item (besides sentry wards) that counter invisibility?

Dust of appearance, gem of true sight, and towers and the ancient see invis (including wards).

I think I'm with Ikuu on this, I like the flexibility and options it provides. The heal/hurt functionality isn't lost for going with a soul ring, and I can get mana for my other skills as well (whereas if I'm out of mana with an Urn, I can't cast barring regen or a consumable).

Speaking of pushing, I probably committed a grand heresy in the latter stages of a long game by selling my treads and picking up Boots of Travel, solely for the purpose of warping around the map and pushing the lanes quickly with Shadow Wave. Never got caught out and the lanes stayed pushed, so at the very least it didn't enter "omg wtf are you doing" territory.

Gems of True Sight, Dust of Appearance, silencing abilities, Spectre's Haunt, Zeus's bolt and ulti.

He is cheap in pub games but can quickly be killed in more serious games where people will invest in killing his invis. Of course that also forces them to buy extra items and Gems drop on death and can be picked up or destroyed so its not like those automatically kill Riki.

I never said he was wrong about its usefulness, by any means (though he clearly took it that way, for whatever reason). I'm just saying that when I play - and I play Dazzle pretty well for the level I'm at, more often than I play him terribly - mana is almost never an issue. When it is, I get a Soul Ring. When it's not... why in the world would I waste the gold? I can save it up and get more regen, more intelligence, more other stuff from better items.

I did that one. :3

Being crazy pushmans with Dazzle is a lot of fun. As long as you know when to back off, you can do a lot of damage. The only exception is when my barracks are down in a lane and theirs aren't. Shadow Wave doesn't do enough damage to push efficiently against the bigger creeps.

I played my first matchmaking game in a while and actually won it! I ended up being 4/2/9 as Windrunner, which is pretty good for me.

Most of my assists were Sniper getting the last hit though. I almost got the first blood. Right near the beginning, during laning, I tied Nature's Prophet to a tree and unleashed my W on him. I was going to follow up with my autoattack and then Sniper got him.

Well, I'd hardly categorize having instant mana potential as being wasted gold. Whether your team is ahead or behind, flexibility at the drop of a hat can be valuable indeed. That I potentially delay better items means less to me than having a free heal or shallow grave for a teammate when he needs it most, or a free skill in a teamfight. In terms of utility, it's hardly a waste.

This is actually common, and acceptable practice, also lets you Buy Back and TP right back in.

You should be using your heal to make sure your carry is never in much danger, and also to harass in the lane if you're against melee.

That's retarded. If you are the babysitter, healing for harass can easily steal an entire wave of farm from your carry, and is guaranteed to push the lane.

Therefore, if he is not spamming the lane fucking up his carry's farm, he may not be running out of mana. If he isn't wasting his mana and he gets an urn or a mekansm he is an even BETTER healer, along with not needing those heals as much himself because he got a hold of some immensely important early stats.

Shadow Wave on melee is an excellent way to setup a kill, it's such an easy nuke if you can time it properly, absolutely nothing wrong using it at the right times.

Oh, I missed that line earlier.

Yeah, I try to heal for harass as much as possible, but it's really only useful if they go in on a wave with full health - that is, the wave has full health - so a) I don't steal farm from my carry and b) I push the lane as little as possible. Optimally, I don't push it at all. It is like... impossible to do that, though, unless the other team is really bad and frequently stands near my creeps when their creeps are dead. I'll snipe in a nuke every now and then when they're trying to get a last hit at the last second, of course. It messes up their last hit and does damage. But... yeah.

Now, if they're being super aggressive and pushing the lane a lot, Shadow Wave is a great counter.

Yeah, definitely. If I know we're about to gank, I get my shit ready. But except for those instances... See above!

Oh I know. I love it. But Ikuu said use it to harass a melee lane. Which does what I said. Completely fucks up the carry's farm.

I think Ikuu meant the same thing. You're not going to healing wave when they're next to one creep, but in the middle of 3 or 4? A wave is easily worth it.

I think Ikuu meant the same thing.

Well then he doesn't make a very good choice of words because in any context I've ever seen "harass" means use regularly to make them go the fuck away. A kill is a kill, not harassment. Like Viper's orb screwing somebody over for example, that's probably the best example of good lane harassment. Which is wonderful if Dazzle is a solo lane, but you can't use his heal as harass as a babysitter without fucking up somebody's farm. End of story.

Not even in-game and the shit is flying. Stop reminding people why these communities are disliked!

People forgot to mention that Necromicon Brawler will also reveal anything invisible btw.

I dislike laning with Carries, their mostly Divas that miss last hits, may as well take them for yourself.

Necronomicon in pubs lol.

I've seen Necrobook once or twice in this game and it was Thorin or Loki using it.

Update should be pretty soon, I hope. Putting down five GAF bucks on 4 heroes this week.

I've never used it and have only seen it in tournaments. Aside from it spawning some dude or dudes and leveling up (how does this work?) what are the advantages of using this item?

I've gotten Necronomicon every game I play Beastmaster.
Carry me more then :3

Basically you get two independent units that have respectable abilities, and the stats are nothing to sneeze at either. INT heroes benefit from the hp, STR heroes benefit from the mana. Necrobook is great for pushing, scouting, harassing.

Get out of that Beginner / Intermediate bracket! Happens so much when I play Brood / Riki that it's not even fun playing those heroes now. I don't make Shadow Blade on heroes anymore because someone is guaranteed to make a Necromicon.

He needs to get better at hitting Power Shots before he can do that

YEAH I SAID IT <3
