fnatic are playing their first game tonight and might have Moon as a stand-in, they're against mTw so they have a chance.

I don't usually watch tournaments but this sounds like it would be worth watching.

Will be interesting to see their growth over the next few months in terms of strategy.

Pugna's Portrait look out of place to anyone else? The skull looks like a 2d image ontop of a 3d modeled body. Very off centered from the cowl too.

Why isn't invoker ever banned in tournaments? He seems like such a good hero. I'm interested in seeing his win rate and pick rate.

stealth invoker QQ post, fuck tornado range, ridic...

Also was really hoping they would put sylla in cm this weeks patch.

actually he is banned a lot since he's an imba hero. =D

Sorry if you try to talk to me in the GAF channel I probably won't read it, don't usually read the channel chat

It was on Steam. And you responded to me, saying you weren't playing right then. And ten minutes later you were in a game with other people. D: I've also sat in Mumble waiting for you guys to finish games before, even saying "I'd like in on the next one" and then you guys start a new game without ever even talking about finishing the old one, so there's no way I'd know you were done so I could pipe in again (i.e., similar to what Guesong was talking about). U:

(Just so it's clear, I'm not bothered or anything. I'm just messing with you.)

2 thoughts:

a.) A few weeks ago I had 33 more losses than wins. As of today, I have 1 more win than losses. And 5 characters with 5 performance bars. word.

b.) Just finished the most stressful game as Lich I've ever played.

So my team decides to insta-lock 2 squishy carries (Destoyer, Shadow), a mediocre carry (Jugg) and super-squishy Zeus. 3 carries mostly squishy, 1 squishy ganker, no stun, no support. I conclude that it's best to go Lich with a pure support build since they'll need those frost shields early and often. Man, these kids bitch at me the entire match. I kept the map warded, they had ice armor on them non-stop, literally. But they bitch at me because I:

1.) Max out ice armor first (because their squishy asses needed them) and mana steal next (ice armor are not fucking free) with just 1 frost blast (which we didn't need more of; why would I want to go for kills when I need to play hard support?).

2.) Built Mek first after boots and bracers. 3 carries all with less than 1200 health for over half the game, but they're mad I picked up a Mek to keep their dumb asses alive?? wut???

3.) Wasn't going to waste an ult where there's just 1 hero, or 1 hero and a bunch of creeps to absorb all the bounces.

4.) Would get stunned by the other team's Sven and focused down. It's somehow my fault for not ulting or attacking while stunned.

I mean, really. I think they asked the other team to report me 5 times. Noob this, noob that. Guy gets killed all the way across the screen? Lich's fault. Lich tries to save a guy getting jumped by slowing the enemy with a frost blast and throwing a frost shield on him, but it not being enough to save him? Lich's fault. With endless amounts of bitching. I finish 2/5/18 and we win. Which is what I expected to do on a team with a Zeus and 3 carries. As it should be, really. This community, man. This fucking community. They actually gave me a headache.

I'll probably take a good, long break from this game. I felt like I was chasing a carrot on a stick while walking on a treadmill. Finally got over .500, which was my goal.

Dreams, congratulations on reaching that .5 mark :)
I'm not sure I would ever make the decision to go armor before nuke on lich though, but apparently it worked out for you!

funny thing is that I'm 0-6 with lich in Dota 2, while having played probably 2k games as support in dota 1
I guess it's showing overall that I have that carry mentality rather than support, what a waste of a WoW career I had haha

edit: and YES, always meka on lich if no one else is getting it!!

Cheers. And regarding Lich, I went 1 skill point (first skill point) for nuke, then maxed armor, then mana steal (with ults on the regular schedule). I just felt like they needed the armor more, and additional nuke points only give you more damage rather than something useful. I felt like with 3 carries who all need farm and kills, it's best to just put them in position to succeed.

And yea, I feel you on the carry mentality. I rarely play support, but when the team auto-locked, I knew what I had to do and just adjusted my mind accordingly. To me, winning was going to be defined by putting everyone in the best position to be successful.

Dream just play clinkz

I have yet to try him. lol. I think I had enough people say he's "boring" for me to not be interested. But I still have a number of heroes I've haven't played with that I want to try. I've never even tried: Omni, Ursa, Jakiro, DP, QoP, Vengeful, Enchantress, Pugna, Enigma, Prophet, Skeleton King, Pudge and Sand King. Naturally, I'll work them all out vs. Bots at some point before bringing them online. I don't embarrass myself like that (picking someone I've never used before) if I can help it.

First point is always Sacrifice (unless you're going for a 5man roam before the game starts).

that's what I usually do, but I decided that I wanted to harass better with the first point this time, as I was laned with a melee vs Sniper. and we got an early kill out of it, so yea. just depends on matchups, like everything else in the game. One thing I've found over the course of 500 or however many matches I've played in there is no "do this 100% of the time" skill order and item build. I go based on how things are going and what we need. Seems to work, and now I can say "it works more often than it hasn't." lol

I'd still go Sacrifice first, honestly it sounds like you did will despite your build rather than because of it.

About a week ago I realized I had been sticking to only a handful of heroes, and have barely touched many others. Now I only random. I'm finding a lot of really fun heroes through it.

I can't believe I've never bothered with furion before.

I did well enough. Which was my goal. If I ended the match 0/0/20 in a win with Lich I would have been just as satisfied, as my goal with this specific team composition was to make sure my carries got max farm and hero kills and stayed alive. The build was to do just that Phase Boots + 2 Bracers + Mek + Sheep Stick. All the 3 carries had to do was...what carries are expected to do (farm well and carry the game late). They did. It was unfortunate that 3 soft carries and 1 soft ganker were selected in the first place, but people don't always think about these things and how it can affect your chances. They just pick who they like or who they think they know. People like me make lemonade out of lemons; I roll with the punches sometimes and try to just focus on putting people in a position to succeed.

If I had any experience with Omni, I probably would have selected him. I really like his game...but I didn't have any experience with him so that was that. Either way, I've won more than I've lost with Lich, so I'll just keep using my best judgment with him in such scenarios. Fuck a "one build fits all" notion, with respect.

How good is the tutorial / onboarding process for new players? Have never touched the original but am intrigued by this, have heard it's very hardcore though.

No tutorial has been implemented into the Beta. Your best resources will be (that I've found, anyway):

1.) playdota.com
2.) dotafire.com
3.) youtube

The first 2 links have some really good guides for playing in general and guides for certain characters. I find them to be a really good starting point. YouTube also has some really good guides/tutorials on gameplay basics.

Lastly, there is a build-in mode that lets you play against a group of bots. This will help you work on the things you find in the guides, your timing, skill casting order, positioning for team fights, etc. IMO, the biggest obstacles to being decent are (1) understanding how your selected character works, (2) how (s)he works within a given team, (3) how (s)he can be best played against the enemies you're in a lane against early, then in team fights later, and (4) understanding what the enemy team wants to do based on their composition so that you can effectively counter it. Basically, the shit requires a heavy investment in time and effort. There are so many possibilities and variables to account for from one game to the next.

There is no tutorial / onboarding process right now :(
Partly because it's a beta.

Are probably ok places to start though...
I can't speak for the reddit guide because I haven't read it, but the purge commentary is on point and enjoyable. +1 on that.

edit: that reddit page is very nice.

DotaFire is generally pretty terrible for guides.

http://www.dotahut.com/guides.php has some good guides from good players.

Pulling the lane back with Sacrifice, and hitting people with your Q will do a much better job of this than giving them some armor.

Just dominated a pub game with Zeus.

18-2-14.

Riki was mid vs. me. It did not go well for him once I had my bottle and CM on my team.

Only had 3 items .... Aghs, Arcane Boots, Refresher.

Hm... Learned something new today. Axe and Ursa are apparently the squishiest characters in the game... at least, that is what I was lead to believe today when my team's Ursa lost in a melee 1v1 against Sniper and Axe couldn't push the base when Vengeful Spirit and my Leshrac had just killed three of the enemy team and we were all at full health.

huh? axe is the epitome of the blizzard melee design: jump into battle and swing your shit until they die or you die trying

If the axe is dying and your team is at full health, that means he's doing his job.

Every point of damage he soaks is one less point of damage to the rest of your team, and considering how shitty his sustained dps is, it actually works out in your favor.

Um... no... You aren't understanding what I'm saying here.

The Axe backed off from a base push at full health after doing jack shit while me and Vengeful cleared the path. He seemed to have thought he was a squishy character. The Ursa was also nowhere to be seen in any major battle. Neither of our Tankiest characters ever wanted to join in on the team fights. They would only show up after we had finished and try to chase down a team of five on their own.

Okay, so they were just bad.

Don't blame the hero if people can't play them properly!

Obviously... I mean, one of the people I play with is a fantastic Axe. Seriously, we rock that shit. I was just making a comment on the absurdity of playing pubs. I thought that was pretty clear with the way I worded it, but who knows. :P

I know exactly what you mean. Its especially bad when you're playing a support/initiator and your tanks/carries are either too preoccupied with last hitting/jungling/farming that they completely ignore you, or they are minutes late.

Especially frustrating if you grab a rune in the laning phase, go down for a gank, ping the hero you want to gank, they are in perfect position, they do nothing to move in to attack, so you're left to your own devices.

I think the biggest problem for most new players is (and it took me awhile to get into this mindset too) is the transition from laning phase to teamfight/pushing. Hence why you'll see dumb players go deep into enemy lane pushing a tier two/three, when the entire team is defending or recovering, etc.

I don't know if its just me but after using most heroes at least once, I could tell what their basic team role was, while I constantly end up with people who seem just confused/play certain characters in the oddest ways.

5 wins less than my losses now though, so close!

I've noticed that the xp bars I pro dota2 players' profiles as well as Tobi's are filling up. Anyone know how they've gotten it to fill? And what does it mean for that matter?

They were enabled a long time ago, like last summer. So before any normal people had access. It stopped soon after, so was just a test.
