Had a game lost at the pick stage.

Enemy goes three carries (Shadow Fiend, Luna and Kunkka). My team picks a bunch of gankers. They then decide it would be the best idea to try and farm for forty minutes then smash their heads repeatedly against the enemy.

At least I got to practice some Rubick so it wasn't a total loss.

Rant time.

Pudge

Dominated.

Made everybody look like b-tier players.

No wards. I get my own.

Went 16-0 in 22 minutes.

Team royally fucks up.

I started playing this yesterday, the game is a lot of fun but completely terrifying. I read for about 6 hours before I even picked a hero to try, then after that, I watched a ton of YouTube vids of that hero... THEN I had a few games in botmatches.

I went with Lich, since he seems to be reccomended for new players and actually I kinda like his role. I've been hovering about trying to get last hits and sacrificing creeps every time the CD is up and trying to harrass the heroes on my lane. I've been building up my items to the tranquil boots and mekansm, I think thats all pretty much reccomended right? The last game I played was much longer and I managed to build up a Aganims scepter, dunno if thats really that great, but I had money coming out my arse. I denied a tower in a couple of games, thats fine to do right? The thing I get confused with is once the whole laning thing starts to break down, it seems to me that the game gets much more dynamic, which is great but right now I'm not experienced enough to see why or what.

Does GAF have a guild or something, I'd like to play with real people at some point but I can't be arsed to get chewed out just for trying to learn a game lol.

Edit: I'm alright with buying wards and I've looked up where to place them etc. though I haven't done it in a bot match yet tbh, in a real game, would it be the Lich players role to buy the courier too?

His q is like best lvl 1 skill ever. It lasts forever. In team fights just make sure you get your ult off on everybody. Push or defend with your wards as they kick butt.

Other than that you fall off so hard at the end unless you snowball like crazy.

Yeah try to learn how to lasthit. But remember lich is used as a support, if for some reason you lane with your team's carry, he should have the farm as his peak with items is much higher than yours (and Lich works well without many items). In that case, your priority is to deny the wave, make sure your carry is safe and if posible stack and pull camps, if you need to sacrifice yourself for him to scape a gank, go and do it.

Mek is a great early item on lich. It's not as good as the game goes on, so try to get it fast. The boots may depend on the game, you team needs mana to push? Go Arcane, for example. Aganins upgrades your ultimate, a great luxury item, get it if you can, but remember to save for buyback just in case.

I denied a tower in a couple of games, thats fine to do right? The thing I get confused with is once the whole laning thing starts to break down, it seems to me that the game gets much more dynamic, which is great but right now I'm not experienced enough to see why or what.

Denying a tower.. well it depends, sometimes is better to leave the tower so your team can teleport to it, making travel distances shorter, but if it's in danger of being taken by the enemy deny it, better to give em less gold for it. Later in the game you should coordinate with your team to know what to do, move with them, put wards around so you can see the enemy coming, etc.. You just need to play some more matches to understand it at a basic level.

We do have a guild, but someone has to invite you from the DotaClient.

Depends, remember that supports generally buy the courier and wards, but maybe there is one other support that will buy it for your team. Anyways allways upgrade the courier as fast as you can. And do not put any point in your skills until you encounter the enemy, sometimes they will travel around your forest before the creep spawn and you may need another spell at level one. I once got a kill for getting Skewer instead of Shockwave on Magnus first, I level'd up the skill in the middle of the level 1 battle.

Yes tranq and mekansm is recommended for lich so you never have to go home. You can replenish your hp using tranq and you can replenish mana through sacrifice. If anyone on your team doesn't buy Arcane Boots, you may consider buyin that instead of tranq. It will be a great help inbetween clashes. Also, keep a lookout on your teammates items. If someone is already building mekansm, you may want to consider building other items.

Go to Neogaf channel and ask for an invite there

Yes, any support item should be bought by Lich as much as possible. This includes observer wards, sentry wards, smoke of deceit, courier, flying courier. I also recommend always carrying TP to react to ganks or to escape from them.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.

The classic build is one in gale at 1 and one in sting at level 2 and then max wards by 7. However some people have started trying one point in wards at 3 (for the vision) and maxing gale and sting first for max team fight damage and harass. You always pick up your ulti.

Wow thanks for the replies, I didn't realise you can only make one of items like mekansm per team, though now you say it it makes sense. How can I check what other players are making? Just click their hero and look at their inventory? In a good game I assume you'd communicate, but I can guess not all pub games work like that lol.

I like to start with Tranquil Boots, then if I'm the designated Mekansm carrier, disassemble when it's time to complete the Mekansm. At that point, my choice of boots varies depending on what's needed. (Arcane if the team is lacking them, Travel if we're stomping and I'm swimming in gold, or just leave them un-upgraded if money if tight and we need wards/detection.)

I very rarely feel the need for Tranquil Boots on a Mekansm carrier.

I always check the inventories of the other potential Mekansm carriers before I start. If I don't see any of the pieces in their inventory, I send a quick "build mek" message to the team to let them know they can skip it. (Pieces to look for would be Headdress, Buckler, Ring of Regeneration, or Chainmail. If you're not sure which heroes might build a Mekansm, just check everyone's inventories.)

Isn't high bracket just normal. Very high, high and normal is low or something?

I remember it used to be low, normal, high but then they changed it.

looks like i have finally worked my way into high bracket. games lately have been noticeably less retarded.

In one of my recent games I was supporting a faceless void who would, repeatedly, auto attack the enemy creep wave, underneath the enemy tower, without creep support. Multiple times, he did this and got down to sub 50 health and I had to keep healing him up so that he could stay in lane. He would also leave the creepwave to come back to the pull camp I was stacking, and single pull it, so that he could get back to auto attacking under their tower. Later he constantly complained about how bad we all were, messaging some of us after the game was over to bitch some more.

He had five hundred and twenty two wins; you can never escape the trench.

We have a character named Lina that came from Slayers, Jugg's Ult is called Omnislash, and like 5 Skills are straight rips from Pokemon skills.

A bit late to complain about this sort of thing.
That's not even the same thing
Those are homages
What I'm afraid of is anime image macros and talk about crappy shounen

Are MM tiers readily available? They basically gave it the sc2 ladder treatment

My advice would be to play bot matches with some friends that know the game and just try out every hero. That's what I did when I first started, you never know who you're going to like until you try them. Some you won't immediately grasp how to use properly right away but you'll at least have a rough idea of how they play. Bot matches are good up to a point for you to try and learn the basics and roughly learn the heroes. But the learning curve in bot matches falls off because you're only facing a limited number of heroes and they play in ways you won't encounter in regular matches. i.e. Bots will five-man-doto, chain together disables and push towers better than any team you'll play against when you first start off.

It's good you want to play support but it can be frustrating in the lower levels, you'll support carries who will just throw the game. Keep with it, good supports help win games. Don't be afraid to try out different supports. Choose ones that have strong laning presence like Keeper of the Light or that ones that can have huge impact in teamfights like Tide Hunter or Warlock. Just practice with them, see if you like them. Don't be afraid to try out a few carries or gankers in bot matches.

Purge's videos are a great learning tool. He will random a hero and then either live stream and comment as he plays or he'll cast a replay . Purge will discuss the hero, why he's leveling what skill when and why he's buying what items. He will break the game down in a way that will help you learn not just heroes and skill builds but how you should try to play, what the items are/do and which you should buy/build for various situations.

You will find a Purge playthrough for pretty much every hero.

I'd rather be muted instead of having this reverse typing glitch that's happening to me.

yeah, but having someone like that on your team occasionally, is a big improvement over having someone like that on your team every single game.

It's the tier for the game as a whole (ie replays), so I would assume the averaged rating of all ten players. So there's some definite ambiguity there, especially if you party often.

Could I get some advice on this Meepo vs PL game?

Match 232171278

I was going to write a long summary of this game, but I'll shorten it up. We did really well early on, shut down Huskar, but were never really able to find PL. It seemed like we were dominating the entire game until around 45 minutes when PL finished his items and got level 25. We won a big teamfight in their base but tragically died when the ancient was at 240 health

I can't really decide if we lost because I bought the wrong late game items, or if it was just a standard late game PL stomp. I was planning to go heart->eblade so I wouldn't get outdone in DPS by Huskar, but once it was clear he wasn't going to be much of an issue, I thought getting a second heart might be a better choice against PL. In hindsight, that seemed like a dumb call.

Should I just have built BoTs and a gem after blink and chased PL wherever he went? I hit 25 pretty early, and was stronger than him for a significant portion of the match.

My other question is what should I have done once the ancient was at 240 hp. We team wiped trying to finish the match, and I think it was maybe PL and 1 or 2 others who immediately pushed down the mid lane to end it while Puck and Necrolyte defended. I had enough gold for a buyback and BoTs, with creeps very close to their base. Instead I panicked and bought back to fight PL and timber at our rax, but died.

ffs merleezy did you just wakeup?

That was definitely one of the most impressive hackles I've seen.

I wouldn't mind a Windrunner resurgence. Such a fun hero with all the utility (well, she doesn't really have an ult). Can pretty much do anything.

The feeling when you finally win compendium matchmaking as radiant and decimate the nyx, naix and kotl trilane
Winning the match as radiant is hard, but winning the trilane is incredibly easy ( I thought kotl pick was bad when they did it, still thought so during the game, and playing this week compendium mm made me sure of it ).
