Dota 2 Beta Thread V: Real Talk Strikes Back [Tutorials]

So after a week of playing I have a few issues...

During team fights I just panic and die instantly; I rarely feel like I helped the team at all. I never really know who to focus or when to go in. My perception is no matter when I engage I either get blown to pieces, or I'm too late and the rest of the team is decimated.

The other issue is similar... I just really don't know what I should be doing at any given time. I end up just wondering between towers trying to be with the team for fights, but I either arrive late, or end up out of position by myself. I feel like every player is one step of ahead of me and I'm just desperately trying to catch up. I believe my limited knowledge of the game prevents me from making my own decisions, and has me worried I'm disappointing the team in some fashion.

I don't think I have ever played a game where I feel so utterly helpless at times. It's really frustrating, but the highs outweigh the lows by a large margin, so I'm dedicated to getting better... I just really don't know how.

This is exactly how I felt for a long time playing Dota. It wasn't until I played heavy support for a group of friends who are high tier players and I started playing against people who would punish every wrong move instantly and with people who would correct every mistake I made, that I got better. I think support is the best role to start out on, it's just as difficult to get good at as all of the other roles, but there is more margin for error, as your deaths don't matter quite as much; not that this gives you a license to feed...which I did... a lot.

The first thing you need to do is get really comfortable with at least 2 or 3 heroes, so that you aren't totally lost when your hero gets picked by the other team. Positioning is something I didn't learn properly until I started playing initiate heroes (heroes that start teamfights) like Sandking and eventually Magnus.

Sandking is a great hero to learn early. He has an instant stun, which is fairly easy to land, a brief invis to get you out of bad situations you may get into and his ulti can be game-changing if you land it properly. He's a hero that teaches you about positioning, because you have to make sure you are slightly outside of enemy sight/stun range before initiating and he's a support as well, so he teaches you about core item builds and when to pick up items such as wards and courier for your team. Try him out, see if you like him and make some plays; that's my recommendation at least, as he's easy to contribute with. Just make sure you learn how to use blink dagger with his ultimate once you get comfortable enough with him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRVYQjwwML4

That vid will give you a decent idea of how to play the hero and teach you his fantastic initiating skills with blink dagger.

As far as knowing what to do and when to do it goes, I think everyone is constantly learning that one. Play with teammates who you can voice chat with, random pubs wont teach you how to coordinate properly with your team. Make a decision to go on a hero with your lane partner for instance, do some math, say 'yep, they're low enough that our attacks will definitely kill them' and go for it. Defending towers is important, losing too many towers is how you lose the game, not just losing team fights. The most important part of every decision you make, is carrying a TOWN PORTAL SCROLL. Always have a TP in your inventory, if you have a spare 135 gold, buy one, always. This allows you to get to towers to defend and travel to teamfights you are far away from quickly.

Also remember you can buy TP scrolls, boots and other assorted items from the sideshops in lane, which saves you time and keeps you in lane.

Item builds are really important too. Find a good core item build for a hero (lots of guides online, some are bad, some are good) and make sure you always know what item you are going for next. Don't be afraid to adjust your build though. Taking a lot of harass in-lane? Get a magic wand. Getting picked off by their high-DPS autoattacking carry, get Ghost Sceptre. Getting stunned out of every fight? Get BKB. The list goes on and you will learn item builds as you get better. The other thing is starting builds. Don't buy boots first and don't buy bottle first (there are very occasional situations where you can, but not worth mentioning here). Always get regen, 1 tango, 1 salve and 3 iron branches is the most all around item build that generally works for all heroes. If you are mid, get 1 tango and 3 iron wood branches, so you can buy your bottle faster. I wouldn't advise you play a mid role just yet though if you're a beginner, as it can be a difficult lane to play successfully. Why iron wood branches you ask? Iron branches are the most cost effective item in the game, and it's far better to get 3 of them than a slippers of agility, or a mantle of intelligence or a gauntlets of strength,as you get the same stats for less money and you can turn the 3 branches into a magic wand later (which is good on basically every hero and gives you a burst heal that can get you out of bad situations).

This vid talks about starting item builds and why they are important. It's long though, but you can skim through and get the gist of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k6XM4MlYts

Purge does lots of videos helping new players out, so watching him could be a good idea as well. Watching pro games is good also, as you will see interesting strats and item builds and fantastic play and positioning that you can learn from.

If you are really stuck for things to do and neither team is pushing or fighting, but it's past the laning phase, farm jungle. Even if you are a support, gold is always important (unless you are taking it from your carry, don't do that shit) so killing jungle creeps for gold/exp is great. Also, buy wards every 6 minutes if you have the gold and are playing a support role. Don't play carry until you are confident in your skillz bro.

Seriously. Don't play carry, we don't need another carry, those guys picked up Drow and Sniper....don't pick a carry...really? You picked Nightstalker? You want to lane him? Oh come on man. Sorry just venting...

Hope that essay helped a bit...

Good luck!

IS drow used much in higher level matches? Im thinking about buying sime skins for her..

Also why was the op banned?

EG used her a few times with mixed results, besides that she's not used in pro games. (She was also not in Captains mode for a long time). In pub higher level matches.. I guess when she gets randomed or people are in the mood, but that's with every hero haha.

thread whining, ie he posted in a thread just to say how terrible the thread was.
which was somewhat reasonable considering the thread soon got closed, because it was terrible.

Need some advices with lina as a support

I'm a complete noob, but a friend told me that it will be good if I play with a support since nobody picks them in lower level matches or they don't use that specifici role

btw: Why the phantom lancer is so hated? what makes him broken?

Had the most awesome Bane support ever. Refused to buy courier, refused to upgrade courier and told me (was playing OD) to buy my own wards. And kept complaining that our carries were stealing his kills.

Fucking solo matchmaking has the biggest pieces of shit. Literally got some cunt sitting at tower contributing nothing, he announced the to the team he's going AFK then just proceeded to feed. But I only have two reports a week and used them today on two morons feeding on the other team.

Fucking awful system.

Lina is a pretty straightforward hero: you do a ton of damage with your spells and then autoattack everything that's still alive (Fiery Soul helps you with that). Her stun is a bit hard to hit (not as hard as Leshrac's, though), but with a bit of practice you won't have any problem. You'll also need good positioning, as she's slow and squishy.
Also: don't steal kills with your ultimate, it's a waste of damage. Use it on the enemy carry or a dangerous support when they're at full health and then stun them when they try to run away. It doesn't matter if someone else gets the kill, you don't need it anyway.

My man! Exactly what i was going to go for..

I dont wanna invest in skins if the char isnt viable at later levels...you know, i wanna play them often

Well it's not like every match should be catering to the meta. I mean if you want, you can play the same 10 heroes picked every time if you're worried about the meta.

Does qop count as a waifu or is she more of a vindictive ex gf?

Nearly every hero is viable in pubs. Not something to worry about. There are definitely good pub heroes and not so good ones, but there isn't a single one that just never can be played, ever.

Yeah it's true supports get picked less in lower levels, so picking one is mostly a good choice. Though you will find many low level games are lost because you have a shitty carry on your team, that can't find farm to save his life. That will lose you the game regardless of how good your support is.

Lina is pretty straightfoward, but I would actually recommend other supports first, since Lina's stun is pretty easy to miss. If you have a reliable stunner though (like Chaos Knight or Sven) you can set up an easy stun combo. Easier supports to play are Ogre Magi, Crystal Maiden and Shadow Shaman. They all have reliable stuns that are easy to set up. Shadow Shaman is also an excellent pusher and Crystal Maiden solves most mana problems your team may have. Jakiro is pretty similar to Lina, but imo his stun is easier to hit. Also his ultimate wrecks teamfights.

Phantom Lancer is hated by many, because he is hard to kill in lower pubs, and his illusions do all the work for him. And he has so many illus, that it's hard to pick the right one out of the bunch. Also he can solo push two lanes at the same time, which sucks a lot.
He is not invincible though, and if you gank him early with dusts ready, he won't spiral out of control.
Lategame he is very strong and if your team lacks AoE spells, you will most probably lose.

I miss playing Dota 2. Ever since It updated back in April, i haven't been able to play. It freezes on startup, or on hero selection. Installed and Uninstalled many times. I just gave up.

Weird, never heard of that before. Last like 2/3 patches have all reduced memory usage and other memory stuff, maybe try again.

unless you're an MLG pro gamer you have nothing to worry about as far as a hero not being viable.
The shit only comes into play when you're in the super super high tiers.

? I don't even know.

In any game character selection doesn't matter that much in low levels since nobody knows the full strengths and weakness of a character, that's why for example in SF IV I could beat all my friends with dan since they don't play FG

with dota is the same

Except Dota is not 1vs1.

His point still stands. That's why there's pub stomping heroes. Some people don't know the full strength and weakness of a hero (or composition).

Just had a game where Tenck fed mid four times in a row within 5 minutes and we still won. I'm a little ashamed.

Lol. Fuck that spirit breaker. I only wanted to give them 2 kills though. Too bad Batrider sticky napalm is annoying as fuck.

http://dotabuff.com/matches/204115681

Highest GPM and EXP even though I gave up 4 kills mid.

Edit: TOO SLOW DAMMIT

Select confirmed officially and now Mini off QPAD.

We'll see where this leaves them/who they'll pick up.

Select was definitely more of a liability than an asset. The remaining core is pretty decent. Could see them becoming a tier 2 team in the long run. Doubt they'd ever be top tier, but if the conditions were right I could see them taking games off some of the better teams.

I wish this game had a more in depth stack tracker.. like Lifetime average gold/min.. most kills in a game... biggest streak etc. I like seeing stuff like that, and also stats you can track to see if you improving.

Dotabuff.com has a lot of good stats like that. Although really, the only sign of you improving is your winrate IMO, stuff like GPM and such will vary wildly between games depending on what role you're playing
