Dota 2 Beta Thread V: Real Talk Strikes Back [Tutorials]

I finally tried Skywrath Mage out. It didn't go very well because I went up against a Nyx, who proceeded to starve my mana and then gank the shit out of my teammates, which gave Spectre room to get fat and stomp us. But aside from that, I can see how he could be a lot of fun, and I will definitely pick him again sometime in the future. His silence+slow is awesome and he does so much burst damage. The problem is that we didn't have a single stun on our team, which would really have helped me secure kills with my ult. And he's squishy as all fuck; Nyx could kill me before his stun duration ended.

Dota 2 is the only game so far, where I really noticed some people having played more than a thousand hours of this game, and still don't get basic shit like autoattacking creepwaves. Holy damn, this one guy was just so damn stupid.

10% HP? Better run into Sniper's ult range because hell, all these pings from my team and all that "Careful""Get back!" probably don't mean shit!

Hehe, just had a really satisfying game as Troll Warlord.

Bloodseeker was dominating the early to mid game, but they let me get too farmed and confident.

Very satisfying hero, is Troll. Very satisfying.

k. Stop being a tryhard stalker and let me play with my friends.
Um ok.

I asked you for a match first, you said after the first match you would play me. I said ok and I said I would spectate you plus give you tips. You turned your status offline so I don't know if the messages got to you. I waited until the match was over to ask again but I was not getting any response yet I knew you were online and in the game.

You finally came online, said you didn't want to play me with your friends. I said if there's an open spot you can add, that's BETTER than pairing up with a random. At that point you didn't make it clear if you had an open slot or not but you just went offline again so I had no way of knowing what the hell was going on.

If you had a stack of 5 people that's fine I would not have asked again. Ask anyone on GAF, I never ask twice if someone is in a full stack but at the same time its common courtesy to give a fellow Gaffer a slot if its open. I mean if you would rather play with randoms than Gaffers that's fine too but please make it more clear rather than going offline mode and not communicating the situation properly.

Whatever, water under the bridge. I may come online in a couple of hours if you want to play or if you don't that's fine too.

I DON'T FUCKING GET IT

I don't get how you lane effectively against mister "at level three my attacks take out 1/5th the health of any non-tank hero" Sniper

Apply any force or spells to him. As long as you haven't fed him his Shadow Blade, he melts like paper. He'll sit there in his lawn chair and peck at you and the creeps, and as soon as you get aggressive on him, he has to pack up and go home.

Headshot's most recent change is really annoying though, and once or twice I have had a dumb early death against it.

The problem is that he's applying the same force back, and we're melting at almost equal rates, except his doesn't cost any mana :/

I won't sing the program's praises or anything, but it has an extensive catalogue of podcasts, and autoupdates said podcasts so I don't have to sit on a website bookmark or RSS feed. If I had been exposed to some other media player that was doing that before iTunes, I'd be using that instead.

There are tons. MusicBee or even Winamp are significantly better. Owned an iPhone for years and always installed iTunes, updated phone, uninstalled iTunes. Bloated PoS software.

I've asked this a few times before but never got a reply.

Where do you guys look for interesting dota streams?
What channels can I find cool tournament matches on?
Any specific links to matches that had really interesting strategies in a tournament?

If you don't know what to look for twitch seems as useless as youtube, tens of thousands of videos that can't quality as anything other than white noise.

I'm preferably looking for streams with good narration.

This extension is very useful to find upcoming and ongoing matches and streams: link

This page might be helpful if you want to start following competitive dota and also provides a list of interesting matches, although it has no description on why the matches are interesting: reddit page

More lists of great matches: 1, 2

In before no Lycan buffs.

Come onnnnn, Timbersaw buffs. That hero is fun as hell when you don't have 250 ping most of the game.

i dont even care if lycan gets buffs or not i just want CHANGES; i don't want lycan to be first pick/ban again, then I would refuse to pick him

Okay, I was under the impression that if you, say, composed a team of someone in high MM, two people in medium MM, and two in low MM it would try and find you roughly a similar composition to face.

Apparently not :/

I remember Purge saying that it will skew towards higher, since that skilled player can have a larger impact. I also imagine that not every match up is presented as even. The favoured/even notifications from SC2 would be pretty great here, I think.

I think several of the enemy were in High though, it wasn't even funny how badly we got our asses handed to us.

Although admittedly a large part of that was that our two new players got stuck both times with heroes they didn't know.

You've got to realize that no means no. You should've taken a hint when I rejected your first invite. Or the next 5. Or the next 5.

I didn't have anyone to play with when I first posted in this thread, but luckily my connection with my mates isn't two bad. Three of them just started playing recently. One of them is level 55 on his main profile, the other dude's 60 something. They play us with smurf accounts so that we are joined with newbies, because me and the two other guys are still learning. Having you in our party meant getting matched with higher level opponents, which wouldn't be fair to the rest of the team because I am just not up to par when it comes to denying and last hitting yet. Plus, I didn't want to have you go through the trouble making another account.

And all of us were on Skype. I didn't need to spec my game or send me messages while I was playing. I got your message about DK Soul Ring and that's why I set my status to offline because that shit was annoying. I'll join you when I'm ready. I'm not obligated to invite you to my party just because you're a gaffer, because my mates don't know you and wouldn't be comfortable with an outsider.
I'm sorry.

Yeah I was in a stack with five chatban and 3 low piroirty - the other team had wards AND a courier. WTF next level trench.

I'll give 'em a spin, provided I don't have to kiss my library g'bye :9

Right click Podcasts on the left and go to Podcast Directory to add shows, it'll auto download episodes as they are posted.

Edit: I'd go with winamp. Tons of skins, super responsive, all the podcast features needed, supports more formats, smaller memory footprint.

I just had the most awesome game ever... damn! epic comeback! from having just the base towers and a score like 40 - 15, to winning the game...

When I pick US East for matchmaking, why am I getting people overseas (or so it would seem, laggy and no English)?

If it can't find a game close to you it will widen the search distance to find one. Though the other day I got a really fast queue pop that resulted in a 4 man premade + me where they all spoke Russian. Thankfully they were all nice and one spoke English.

Search Range only refers to the skill of the players. You still search only in the servers you ticked.

But there's nothing preventing anyone from queuing up a search in all the servers at once, so...

Did I imagine a km range that goes up the longer it takes to find a game? Or was it removed?
