singsing actually having conversations with YP on twitter lmao.
An interesting take on that matter, copied from Reddit:
You know when Doritos did that 'Make us an advertisement video!' contest? The point of contests like that isn't to crowdsource a great new television advertisement video. The point is to create a spectacle, and get people talking about and working on something in relation to their brand. People who put a lot of time into making those videos will always remember and associate things with Doritos. That's the intention.
Similarly with this 'YP will sponsor a Dota 2 team.' When a not-p0rnographic business sponsors an esports team, they are looking for long-term brand association with Monster and ESports, or whatever. They want their logos and their products to be showcased consistently and favourably. When a p0rnographic business sponsors (or just says they intent to sponsor) an ESports team, they aren't looking for long-term brand association. They are trying (and succeeding, here) to create a spectacle around the event. They're getting press on Reddit, DailyDot, and Twitter just talking about this. If the sponsorship goes through, and they're banned from every tournament ever (more on that below), that will create another spectacle and 'community debate' (which is irrelevant, (again, more on that below)), getting them even more coverage. Like with Doritos 'make-us-a-tv-ad' competitions, this YP sponsorship is not quite what it seems.
I'll talk about why they will be banned, but first, a little on p0rn websites themselves:
Porn websites have a lot of traffic. A LOT of traffic. More than like, Facebook in some countries. Wow, they must be worth like $10 billion each, and have massive advertising revenue, right? Hey, I wonder why I've never seen a Coca-Cola advert beside a p0rn video. That's so Weird!!
The above is not true because advertisements beside p0rn videos are completely shit. This is because businesses are effectively divided between p0rnographic businesses, and not-p0rnographic businesses. If your business is p0rnographic, no not-p0rnographic business wants to associate with you in any way. This is why GoDaddy (and most large web hosts) doesn't host p0rnographic content. This is why you'll never see an Audi or Hyundai advertisement beside a p0rn video. This is why Youtube doesn't associate with adult content. This is why the only businesses that are (effectively) eligible to advertise on p0rn websites are other p0rn businesses (and this lack of competition for ads makes the ads very cheap). This is why there are so many scam/virus ads on p0rn websites (the ads are very cheap for the number of people reached (and those that don't block the ads and see them are generally not tech savvy)). This is why p0rn websites don't actually have a lot of money. This is why videos on p0rn websites are still in the 360p of 2006 Youtube, and haven't evolved with Youtube (which can give you 1080P or even 4K video for free) despite the costs for delivering high quality video continually going down year by year.
Why they will be barred from entering tournaments, why it will be bad for esports, but good for YP:
Any team or tournament associated with Razer, Steelseries, Monster, Red Bull, BenQ, Twitch (Google), or any other not-p0rnographic business, will not participate in the same tournament as a team sponsored by a p0rnographic business. Why?
Because the marketing teams behind businesses spend some of their budget on ESports teams in order to increase their brand recognition (or advertise a specific product), and to associate their brand positively in a hard-to-reach but important demographic. Not only would they not do so if that sponsorship also led to association with p0rnographic businesses, but they would actively pay money for that not to happen.
This is due to the general public opinion, and the opinions of those who do marketing and market research. This cannot be changed by this subreddit, or by the Dota community. It doesn't matter if you think this is unfair, or stupid, or silly. It is not changing in the foreseeable future.
I see no harm in a shirt with a YP logo on it or a name tagged with YP
The opinions that matter are those of the marketing teams behind not-p0rnographic businesses (which are derived from the general public opinion on the matter). Not yours, mine, or those of this subreddit. End of story.
Why it will be bad for esports (if it goes through):
If this goes through, it will cause not-p0rnographic business to be much more cautious when it comes to sponsoring teams or tournaments in the esports market. It will create a toxic association for them, and will force them to be careful about where their teams are attending (so as not to accidentally attend a tournament associated with a p0rnographic business).
Additionally, p0rnographic businesses don't have that much money (and in particular don't have much marketing budget), so replacing not-p0rnographic businesses with p0rnographic businesses (which would effectively happen if this sponsorship goes through), gives esports teams/tournaments less money overall.
Why it will be good for YP (if it goes through):
The spectacle created by the negative reaction of the not-p0rnographic businesses (and of the owners of the teams/tournaments) will give YP exposure and advertising, and will also associate their brand with 'trying to help ESports'. They don't care about the damage that will be caused to every other (not-p0rnographic) sponsorship, they just want some easy advertising from the controversy.
Either this is YPs plan (to exploit the spectacle and disregard the damage they will cause with teams/tournaments relations with not-p0rnographic businesses marketing teams), or they are morons who think this will actually 'work' in the long-term (spoiler: it won't).
In either case this is an awful idea.
