Drag-on Dragoon 3 producer acknowledges that the lack of core sequels is a problem

In an interview with the game news source Famitsu, Taro Yokō and Takamasa Shiba — creative director and producer for Square Enix's Drakengard 3 action role-playing game — revealed that the company is not currently making new installments to their Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, or Romancing Saga video game series.

“We didn't think that was good,” said Shiba, “We made the opinion that if there's a good game already there, why should we leave it alone? After all, the Drakengard series is also a game series for hardcore fans.”

The translation is kind of bad.
It's more something like this: "The company was not making new installments to series like SO, VP or RS, despite their popularity among core gamers, and that's wrong. Even within the company, we know there are people waiting for them."

That's great to know! I figured the translation was pretty rough, which is why I provided the original Famitsu article in the OP. Could you translate the specific passage in which the quote is mentioned? Just to provide context.

I'm not sure about that. Development costs certainly didn't help, but DS games didn't help any named franchise either, except may be SMT. And I did like VP: Covenant of the Plume but it is still not a game fans of VP want, and don't get me start on Suikoden. I mean these games didn't bring new fans to franchises and alienated some old. How is that a good thing?

They were spinoffs, not positioned as main series entries. At best they might have gotten leeway to make a cheap DS game but not a big console game.

I understood what he was saying from the get go. The sensitive gamers will think he's dissing VP, SO, and RS however.

So this means that there's still a chance they're developing a new SO/VP/SaGa game?

Good. Don't touch those with your shitty Japanese dev team. It's not like you have many talents left anyway.

Is Ito still in SE?

There's something that should be noted about the story that AnimeNewsNetwork put up. What they quoted Shiba on is not entirely accurate. He is speaking about how Square Enix has not been making sequels to core franchises like those mentioned, and that it cannot continue this way, because they're neglecting the core market. The implication of course is that Drag-on Dragoon 3 is a sequel to such a core franchise, and they're hoping to satisfy fans who have been waiting for such a sequel.

This doesn't really change much of the "LOL FUCK SQUARE ENIX" stuff, clearly, but he isn't saying that there aren't any plans to make sequels to the franchises mentioned, simply that they haven't done so of late (which is already obvious to everyone).

Oh...that gives a different perspective. I read it the wrong way and it didn't make sense.

Hmm well hopefully tri-Ace can work on something worthwhile again.

This thread makes me sad, especially for Valkyrie Profile. I loved both 1 and 2. I mean it's not like I'm expecting anything or what, but actually reading something like that is...

I remember how hyped I was for 2 back in the day, with the trailers and everything, and the game sure fucking delivered. The final boss, its music, and the mad voice of
Lezard
will all be burned into my mind forever.

This is actually quite different indeed, and makes me pretty hyped for the future. Get on it Squenix!

That's great to hear.

Not sure how some people hate on Drakengard's gameplay, yet hope for Kingdom Hearts 3.

Ahh, well. Screw the haters. I'm all on board for Drakengard 3 and am very happy that they decided to go through with it!

I don't know what to say.

lol, hilarious/true flow-chart. I'm currently playing through all my backlog 360/PS3 games and Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery are on the list. The trip back in time to 2008-2009-era gameplay/interface should be interesting.

I might be in the minority but I think Romancing SaGa PS2 is hands down one of the finest games on the PS2. It is meaty as hell. I love the soundtrack and visuals. And I just have a blast playing it.

You're not alone, RS Minstrel's Song is a damn fine game with one of the highest user ranking on mk2.
The Saga series is still popular in Japan and Kawazu has publicly expressed his wish to make RS4 before retiring, so why it's not being made is puzzling to say the least (the 2 remakes on DS and Emperor's Saga doesn't count >_<).
I used to think that if they can secure a budget for BDFF and DoD3, they can do the same for Saga, but I'm not too sure now with the company new social/mobile orientation...

Didn't Square say they were going to stop making those social games? I vaguely recall there being an article about that a few months ago. But then again, they DO have that lame FFT social game coming
