Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

Damn, MSAA even at 2x chews up quite a bit of performance. It's the only AA i can add apparently since CCC and SweetFX aren't working for me.

Msaa kill performance in frostbite. I took some screenshots for comparison, and I could barely tell the difference between post-processing aa only and msaa

I changed the command line I posted here slightly, so that might affect it.

Previously I had -GameTime.ForceSimRate 30, I changed it to -GameTime.ForceSimRate 30+. Seems like the + might have an effect, but I'm not sure if this is what eliminated the stuttering for good or not. Someone else in the thread mentioned that the + helped them as well, so it's worth a shot.
Thanks, worth a shot for sure!

Yea, I took two screenshots of your character when you first get control of them and you have to get so close to the screen to tell a difference it's not worth the 10-15FPS difference.

So when I'm in places where there are multiple NPC's outside of the main city, I get really bad stutter in gameplay and big frame drops on my 970. No matter the settings, my graphics card will drop to 0% and stop for about 3 seconds before resuming again. I can audibly hear the fan start and stop again.

Currently have a 4690k and a 970. Card gets to about 85% usage but isn't overheating, 55C.

Put the following in the launch properties for the game:

-GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60+

mah-nigga-gif.gif

Just sold my 290x and ordered a GTX 970, temps were just too damn high for my taste, and it regularly throttled itself to stay within the 95 degree threshold.

GTX 970 should be enough to 'Max' this game right? Not expecting super high levels of AA, but I assume I should be able to turn everything else up? Running a 4670k @ 4.4ghz and 16GB DDR3-2400. The 970 is an EVGA SC ACX 2.0.

So when I put the 60fps thing in game properties it made all the cutscenes run in a weird almost slow mo.

Also I'm getting stuttering. What are the biggest performance hogs in the settings?

Game runs incredibly well so far. Everything on Ultra with MSAA 2x, getting a locked 60 FPS.

i5 4690K Stock
GTX 970 Stock
16GB DDR3-1866Mhz

I gotta say for a game with zero patches. It's running pretty great on my PC. I have to turn down some settings to low/medium to maintain a stable 60 fps in heavy areas. But the game look so amazing even at mixed medium/high settings that I don't even mind at all.

Textures is still on high so I'm happy.

Thank you Bioware for optimizing this a hell of a lot better than Unity. Can't wait for the new Nvidia driver and first patch.

Really conflicted with this purchase because I played the X1 version and liked it but I have to admit, it didn't look so great.

SO glad I went for the PC version.

Ultra settings. Pretty much rock solid 60 on:

1080p (TV)
2500k@ 4.7Ghz
GTX 670 x2 SLI

Guess I can wait a little bit longer to upgrade.

That's bizarre as hell. Do you mean JUST outside of the main city, or do you mean way out in the wilderness?

as much as I agree with you, I wish this wasn't a thing we had to be grateful for. Does Ubisoft even talk to AMD or nVidia?

I can't play it. I'm getting random Nvidia driver crashes!::( During cutscenes, but also outside, it's random. Game freezes and I get an Nvidia driver crash. I'm running a GTX660 and I've left all settings on auto, I haven't done any changes to graphics settings.

Jesus, Nvidia I hate you, I really do!:(

Not getting a locked 60 very often, lots of graphical glitches, screen tearing, random crashes... Tried ultra, which is a step down from what the game recommended, to no avail. Running a 3570k @ 4.4 and gtx970 sli, so more than a little disappointed. Guessing I'll just wait for driver updates and patches.

I'd love to say the grass is truly greener (or redder) on the other side, but AMD drivers are also bugged in this game. And it's an AMD GE title.

My "Graphics API" option is locked to DX11 even though i have a 280x and the latest AMD beta drivers installed. Any help would be appreciated. I want to take advantage of Mantle.

The current method of taking advantage of Mantle is staying away from it, from my experience. Getting lower FPS, higher vram usage and major loading time increases (20 s -> 45 s) when using mantle.

Has anyone messed with GstInput.MouseRawInput and GstRender.ResolutionScale in ProfileOptions_profile yet

Cross posting from the OT as this seems like a PC issue.

God dammit, what the fuck! I've run into a game breaking bug literally 15 seconds into the game.

Created my character just fine, then during the intro cut scene it gave me control of my character. Now, I'm in some weird rocky swamp area with the green sky swirling above me. This happen to anybody else?

Here's some screens I just captured:

Yep, that happened to me too! I think it was because I skipped through the cutscene at the "wrong" time. Did that happen to you too? Really annoying, because I spent an hour making my character!

are you both using the cutscene 60 fps fix? because I was having this same issue for an hour. took off the fix and game worked.

I don't remember skipping anything. It just took me to that place mid cut scene. I'm gonna have to restart the game huh?

I also spent an hour perfecting my characters looks. :/

Yes, I am!

Fuck me. That's the first thing I applied since everyone was saying how much better it makes the game.

So it safe to apply once I get past the intro or is it gonna mess with future cut scenes as well. Anyone using the fix care to chime in?

yeah the thirty fps cut scenes really suck but taking off the fix should at least let you play for the night. hopefully when I wake up tomorrow someone smarter than me will have figured it out.

not sure if it is safe to put it back on. was sick of waiting and just wanted to play a bit before bed. please post in here if it's OK to put it back on.

Any idea how my machine will run it?

Intel Core i5 3550 @ 3.7
8GB Ram
Gigabyte GV-R928XOC-3GD

I can run Unity at about +/- 40 fps on ultra (without MSAA).

I7 920 stock. R9 270 overclocked

I should wait until I upgrade shouldn't I?

I have the same GPU - a better CPU, though (an i7-4770, not sure how much difference that makes for this game). With mostly high settings and a few ultra (and tessellation and MSAA off), I get an average FPS of 40 and a minimum of 32 in the benchmark. I'm using the 30 FPS limit trick posted earlier in this thread and getting a nice consistent 30fps in game, and it looks great!

Msaa kill performance in frostbite. I took some screenshots for comparison, and I could barely tell the difference between post-processing aa only and msaa

The msaa implementation in frostbite is far from great, but in bf3/4 its still a huge improvement over post aa. The difference in motion is massive

Alright, tooled around with all the settings and I think I have the settings I'll be playing with at least until they patch and potentially increase performance...

First off, my settings:

i7 4770k OC'd to 4.5 ghz
Sapphire HD 7970 3GB
8GB RAM

Settings:

Mesh Quality: Ultra
Tesselation Quality: High
Texture Quality: Ultra
Shadow Quality: High
Terrain Quality: Ultra
Vegetation Quality: Ultra
Water Quality: High
Post Process Quality: High
Ambient Occlusion: HBAO
Effects Quality: Ultra
Post Process Antialiasing: High
Multisample Antialiasing: Off

With these settings I'm at 60fps on the regular and it dips to 50-55fps when it does dip (which at this point is about 1/3 of the time...sometimes more, sometimes less).

I did the trick to make the cutscenes 60fps and they hover around the same as the actual game but with added stutter/judder to the movements that isn't there during gameplay. This was something that was even more obvious when it was capped at 30fps and although the stutter/judder is still there at 60fps, the cutscenes are smoother with at 60fps

It's not perfect but I'm happy with the performance, all things considered.

Here are some screens (and my character!):

Anyone know how to get it so the sceenshot counter doesn't appear when you take a screenshots? I'm using the in-game framerate counter via the games console command.

1080p (TV)
2500k@ 4.7Ghz
GTX 670 x2 SLI

Nice. I have a slightly lower 4.4 GHz 2500K, but two GTX 680 in SLI. I guess that the extra bit of GPU power will make up for the lower-clocked CPU. And that's not counting official SLI support when the new drivers come out!

My 680s only have 2GB of VRAM, though. I'll set the texture quality to High, just to be on the safe side.

2GB GTX760 and an i5-4670 @ 3.40 GHz with 8 gigs of RAM.

Not very amazing, I know, but can I still run this 1080p and 60fps while still looking at least as good as the console versions?

That's bizarre as hell. Do you mean JUST outside of the main city, or do you mean way out in the wilderness?

Specifically, in the Crossroads area of the Hinterlands. NPCs just tend to seriously push my system for whatever reason, and I presume my CPU was just having issues. I turned off shadowplay and also found out that another profile was currently logged in on my machine (most likely the culprit as it was running a few things there). After fixing that, it mostly disappeared, but I do still get stuttering pretty bad when loading new areas. I presume it's sort of normal for something this size with my game on a HDD, but I still hope they can fix the loading in a new update.

So, that was probably my issue. Verified how CPU bound this seems to be, I guess. Nothing to worry about, most likely. Worst issue I've had is the game itself freezing on occasion to load stuff. I'm still able to move the camera and press buttons, but the game just hitches and then keeps going. Great fun so far.

My i7 2600k I purchased 2 years ago is only like 30-40% slower than the best stuff out there. And yet it sounds like the game is more CPU bound than GPU. (760 GTX)

So Mantle fucks loading times and worsens peformance?
I have a 280X a I'm at work, can't test the new Drivers that are optimized for DAI.

Can an AMD user say if I'm better off with DX11?
I'm running everything on Ultra at 1080p other than MSAA which is off. It's apparently steady other than microstutters from time to time.

I have 2GB 670s. Not gonna lie, they are on full blast with this game. I did the 60fps cutscene fix and it does drop. Hard. 45-ish. I can live with it.

Just did a test on my 1440p monitor though. Definitely going to have to crank some settings down to get it to 60. Maybe the new drivers will help. (c'mon, Nvidia)

Oh shit. Who put this 980 in my Amazon cart?

Just started the game up, still in character creation. Every few seconds the game locks up for 10 secs at a time. Is this happening to anyone else? I'm gonna be in the character creator for fucking hours.

Mantle is EASILY inferior to good old DX11. It take 3 times longer to load, can't maintain a stable Framerate and hitches like there's no tomorrow. Stick with DX11...at least for now.

I can only hope there's a patch on the way that fixes these issues. Mantle really seems like more trouble than it's worth :(

4670k 4.7 ghz
2xSLI 770 4gb
Getting 55 as average with a low of 38 during the benchmark.

I'm noticing the same thing during custscenes/conversations though, almost as though the speaking parts are in 30fps. It's throwing me off.

Is MFAA on the 700 series yet? I would like to force that on my 780. It seems like a good fit if x4 MSAA is causing a similar performance loss to BF4's MSAA.

ok some updates now that I finished the prologue:

i5 4690k stock
16gb DDR3
2 x gtx970 SLI

all settings maxed, I changed textures to touched by the fade (had ultra yesterday) and I added the + to that command line to unlock the 60fps on cutscenes, not sure if it helped but its still working so thats fine

performance was pretty much the same I had yesterday on the prologue, 70-90fps, never dipped bellow 70. However, and here it comes, as soon as your character wakes up and theres the huge mob outside, it dropped :)

drops to around 45fps, I didnt really mess around anymore, I just wanted confirmation that it would indeed drop in bigger areas. Still seemed perfectly playable, but yeah, I want my 60 (speaking of, whatever I adjust, I have half a mind to play fullscreen / vsync instead of borderless window just to lock it at 60)

so, first thing should drop MSAA down from 4x to maybe 2x yes? and you guys said effects from ultra to high is a big boost aswell if that doesnt work?

whatever you suggest, ill try it later cause now I really need some sleep :p

After finally installing new drivers (horror story there) I got to play the game. Frame rate is odd. Never below 30 except for the part where all the NPC's are standing around (really low) and can hit 60 in the wilderness of the Hinterlands. But to do this I have msaa off and post AA to medium and AO to HBAO. Everything else is Ultra or the highest setting (pretty much what the game chose on start).
3770k@4.5ghz(or 4.6 can't remember)
3GB 780
8GB 2133mhz RAM
I'm expecting any new driver or patch will increase performance. Not sure where the issue is on losing FPS. Maybe Ultra settings in Geometry (I think it's called that). And I know the cut-scenes are 30fps. They were also juddery until I dropped the AA (game set it to 2xMSAA).
So it runs okay, but I was expecting a little better. That said the game looks really good.

hope my i5 3570k @4.2GHz, GTX 670 and 16GB of RAM can get a solid 60, although it sounds like I'll have to wait for driver updates for that.

I can deal with 1080p30 as long as the image quality is better than what I'd get on my PS4, especially since I got it from Origin Mexico for €37 for the digital deluxe edition. It's €69.99 on PS4 in store and on PSN over here in Ireland, which is pretty disgusting. Almost double the price of what I got it for on PC.
