Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

Curious how things will be now since the reviews and everything for ACU and DAI have come out, as well as the netcode issues with MCC. Actually surprised FC4 was top of the heap, I'm interested in it. Loved 3, but haven't really been paying any attention to it cause I knew DAI was my priority for the 18th and most of fall/winter.

Shooters tend to dominate, so I was expecting to see Far Cry 4 and MCC way up there, but search interest is pretty much equal for all of them at the moment. I was mostly interested in Unity, because it probably represents the greatest threat to DA:I's consumer base. Lo and behold, a bunch of people have showed up in this thread saying they're chucking out their intent to get unity and going with this.

I'm just as interested in software NPD as hardware for once when it comes to November.

Still have GT's review yet to come out :)

Is it just me or has Metacritic really cut down on the number of outlets being included in their score? I could have sworn you'd find games with 50+ published reviews included regularly last gen, it feels like we're only see a couple dozen for each game this go around.

Well, DA2 PC has 45 reviews on Metacritic. Infamous Second Son has 90(!) reviews on Metacritic. I'm assuming that a lot of smaller outlets either didn't get review copies or haven't spent enough time with the game yet. I expect that the there are a lot more reviews to come. This isn't backed by science but I believe the general trend is that later reviews bring the score down, not up, so a 90s average for DA:I is probably a longshot even if it gets another 20 reviews or so in the coming weeks.

So true. The dog was OP and had a lot of funny interactions with the party!

The first mod for DA:O I ever installed was the one that let you keep Dog as an extra companion at all times - without taking up a slot.

Made it a lot more fun to take him along everywhere. And since I was playign in nightmare, it definitley didn't feel OP.

Myself included.

Have always been a fan of Bioware and Dragon Age but the second installment left a sour taste in my mouth.

It just had to be that Unity is riddled with issues and Inquisition is Bioware's redemption song.

Yeah, but many of the reviews [PS4 version] have mentioned the bugs and technical issues like a negative, maybe now that the 2.02 firmware is out and many of these issues were fixed, scores will be somewhat better.

Can all the achievements/trophies be obtained in one playthrough? It looks like it from the list.

That would be a first for BioWare I think. All the MEs and both DAO and DA2 require at least two run throughs for all the achievements, if not more since many involved romance achievements and some varying choices. Haven't looked at DAI's though to not spoil anything so maybe they've cut back on that stuff.

Oh man, I hope Shinobi's guide/wiki is helpful. I wish there was an abridged walkthrough of the first two games or something. Does the game itself have a database of past events you can look through by any chance? I would imagine not
I hope...if I were to go into every detail it'd be pages and pages long lol. It's more of a summary that I think should bring anyone up to speed. I also linked to the Keep which goes through all the decisions.

All right. Whenever the thread for lore/background goes up I'll post the useful videos I found in youtube. There are two video series of lore which is very useful as you can get two perspectives. DAO also has a basic summary video. DAII only has a 1 minute lore video lol. Unless somebody wants to watch all of the cinematics.

Just looked. As long as you start on Nightmare, I think you'd be able to do it in one go.

I'm also going for a summary. If we started getting really specific it would just raise more questions, lol.

Edit: Did you cover lore stuff in your OT? Like before Origins/Da2?

IGNs video review was up today. I'm a bit concerned about the reviewer saying it has a "weak plot" -- I mean, this IS Bioware so part of me is not surprised, but he specifically said that a lot of it was due to the "completely forgettable" villain. I was really hoping that the villain was one thing they'd get right this time. Oh well. I hope it just wasn't his cup of tea or something.

Oh shit the game crashed.

Edit: Or not, but huuuge frame drops wow.

Is anyone going to nightmare their first playthrough though? I'll play on normal/hard so I can enjoy the story and pace as well.

I always play on Nightmare. I like a good challenge and like to know I have earned my loot and kills.

Will that bit more gratifying when I manage to take down a Dragon :)

Guys when does EA Access open tonight? How long?

Yes I'm desperate to play haha

No just DAO/DA2.

I explained any terms/characters that might be confusing to newcomers. I think it's comprehensive enough.

Bioware generally isn't good with villains with two exceptions: Saren and Irenicus. Loghain was great but just wasn't in the game enough. It's a shame too- with how good they can be at character writing it feels like something that they could really nail if they put the effort into it. Yet they consistently keep the main villain offscreen and nebulous for the majority of their games.

They really need to come up with a plot that allows for more sustained interaction with the villain throughout the game. They had a golden opportunity in DA2 with Meredith but you couldn't even talk with her until the third chapter.

I'm planning on going through on Nightmare first time. I have very fond memories of me and friend playing Origins at the same time on the highest difficulty and helping each other through encounters. I didn't feel it distracted from the story.

Though if any encounters feel particularly broken I will lower the difficulty. I can't spend forever on the game :(

Still no review on GT? Geez.

I might get this. Never played a DA before, but I can't wait till the next Skyrim/ES to play an RPG, and this got good reviews.

Edit: almost forgot The Witcher 3

If Dawg is still awake, I'm curious how long it takes to get all of the companions, if you can switch around the order in which you acquire them, and if there are any temporary companions in the beginning.

Not sure but I'm gonna check... It's 6 hours. Which breaks down to: 3.5 hours stressing over every last detail of my character, race, and class. Starting the game! Playing for 30 minutes then hating one little thing about the character. Re-starting game with new and improved character! Playing the game for 30 minutes then reaching a response wheel question that I'm sure has impact later in the game. Regret answer immediately after it is chosen. Re-start game! Play for 30 minutes and time is up!

Doesn't take that long to get everyone. You'll have everyone once you meet the villain.

The livestream is pretty fun. Can't wait to see the cluelessgamer episode.

My excitement for this game is at galactic levels at this point though. Already have my deluxe copy staring at me in Origin but I'm considering picking up a console version as well (have both PS4 & XB1).

It's evil having it ther ein your Origin library slightly faded.

Maybe if I click it enough times it'll install....

Oh that's Freddie Prince Jr playing as Iron Bull on the stream. Cool.

Edit: haha Freddie saw a dragon on the horizon covered slightly by trees.

"OOOOOOoh!"

(turns camera away, and askes in a whisper)

"Am I not supposed to show that?"

I'm happy for this dude, he really seem to enjoy the game and being in it.

Thanks to everyone who responded to me (pages 43 and on). I guess i will be playing Origins again, or maybe watch a Youtube walkthrough.

Okay, at least I won't be doing redundant work then. :)

I've compiled the main videos on the lore you can add to the OP. It's only like two main series though. DAO has a somewhat video summary as well. But I'd argue that with Shinobi's material and reading the wiki entries it should be enough for the game plots.

Starting on Nightmare looks very hard, Angry Joe was having a really tough time on his impressions videos so he had to tone the difficulty down.

He also never used a healing potion and was generally holding up on the analog stick the entire time so his archer would constantly be moving right up next to enemies. Including the boss who hit him for 95% of his life.

But why? A big selling point to Soldier's Keep DLC for DAO was that it had a storage chest which was sorely missing from the base game. They then made a point to have one in Awakening and again in DA2. Why BioWare, why. I don't want to be a dick again and sell someones beloved item like Aveline's Templar Shield that belonged to Wesley and then have her tell me hey you sold my dead husbands shield, the last memento of his I had left.
Could mean they did away with arbitrary weight limits in the inventory. I'd take that over item storage.

I was disappointed when in GiantBomb QL they turned HUD off and only thing to disappear was HP bars.

If you have "HUD On/Off" -toggle then have it turn WHOLE HUD off. HP bars, action bars, radar, objectives etc. Everything! I so want take some screenies in this game, but if I can't fully hide HUD I will be sad panda :(

Just like Destiny has so sick screenshot potential, but trickery required to "hide" HUD just makes it more pain than worth to get those shots.
