Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

This is just Spider-man on pc just as a comparison over it's lifetime.

I'd say it's fairly certain that DA:V is a success, unless there's a shit ton of EA play members on steam, i don't know those numbers or if they even do the Premium game catalog thing anymore.

Spider-Man is a bad comparison. Old game, ported years after Playstation, relatively low interest from the get go.

This should be compared to games that had a similar history and launched on all platforms at the same time. Dragons Dogma 2 for example launched with around 200k iirc then gained 30k over the weekend and ultimately peaked at 230ish.

Gonna be interesting to see if it climbs above 100k over the weekend, I guess that depends on word of mouth. I don't see it with all the negativity floating around on social media.

50K is pretty damn high for this.
What do you mean? A new AAAA RPG from EA with the Dragon Age name attached to it should be doing multiple 100,000s these days. We won't see the true peak until this weekend though.

As an aside, things are slowing down. I wonder how much of impact Halloween will have on player counts tonight.

I used Spider-man as a comparison because it wasn't the biggest thing on steam when it launched.

but Spider-man is also an IP where it's name will carry it no matter what.

DD2 didn't have that name recognition plus it was extremely positive going into launch.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

It's about 60k right now and still increasing, all things considered and all the negativity surrounding it, most (including myself) were expecting it to be a Concord or thereabout.

60k and rising is still pretty decent, and its still increasing. We're in the middle of a workday, so it's probably gonna go higher after-hours when most people have time to play.

Would Space Marine 2 be considered a smash hit?
Definitely it's a much smaller budget game and less known. 225,690 peak concurrent on Steam and over 2 million copies sold a day after launch so definitely a beyond expectation level for it. Applying the same ratio for Veilguard, it'll be a a 1 million steam peak concurrent peak and over 8 million copies sold after 1 day.

Oh, well that would have been a mega disaster. I wasn't expecting that, so if that was your bar, then yeah 50k is good. Still needs to do a lot better for what it is though. Anything less than 100k would be a dud.

I’m going to say 70k peak today and 100K all time peak on Sunday.

Some other comparisons
Starfield 330K
Fallout 4 470K
Baldur’s Gate 3 875K
Divinity Original Sin 2 93K
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 96K
Cyberpunk 2077 1M

And those are PC numbers. Maybe console is higher (it's a more casual DA after all). This development has been expensive for what we've heard, so I don't expect them to break even. But I think Bioware saved this ball. Good to see the haters didn't move the general opinion. If the next ME sucks you can destroy Bioware, but just wait...

IDK about that. If you look at the charts for other games, most of them hit their daily peak around this time. I wouldn’t expect a massive bump later today.
Serious question: Do most gamers not go to work (or school)? I'm a teacher and I just sort of assume most people who can afford to get the 'big new game' (and have a gaming machine) are at work all day.

I do think Dragon's Dogma 2 is probably the best recent example on what to compare Veilguard to. Dragon's Dogma 2 peaked really early at 200k+ on Steam but fell off pretty quickly. It sold roughly 2.5mil across all platforms its first week.

Veilguard probably won't reach DD2'S CCU on Steam, but it's legs should be longer, as long as word of mouth isn't terrible. It has much deeper RPG elements when it comes to characters, combat, and dialogue options. Which should give it greater replay value

Honestly I wonder the same thing. No idea. Some of them could be college kids with time between classes. And of course when Americans are getting home from work, Europeans are going to bed and Asia is already asleep.

It sold more than 5mil made in Russia and published by Focus, it was probably their biggest hit. But they dont live in USA and spend 5 years on a game, and then you count the reboot , since initially Dragon Age Dreadwolf had gaas elements, then got rebooted in 2019. This probably stood in dev for 7years or something like that. They probably need to sell 6-7mil to even start being profitable.

Honestly the reviews look pretty good considering all the people review bombing it for supporting a variety of lifestyles...
Reading the reviews, most negative reviews are legit complaints like the game crashing, shallow combat or baby-talk level dialogue, while a lot of the positive ones are "anti-review bomb"

Keep in mind Star Wars Outlaws peaked at 116,620 (and it was considered a flop internally by Ubi)

EDIT: This is twitch viewers. The game has not released on Steam yet.

This is a $70 game, and these numbers look quite strong to me.
For a bit of context, so far this is doing numbers comparable to Owlcat's Wrath of the Righteous and Rogue Trader.
And these were games made by a small Russian studio with a fraction of the budget they spent on Veilguard (or any other Dragon Age title, really).

EDIT- Basically, it's (probably) not going to "lose money" on the long run, but it's not going to turn into a runaway hit like BG3 or Elden Ring, either.

50k is a great number right off the bat.

Projects to probably peaking around 100k (generally the peak after a new game release is the first Sunday afternoon after it comes out).
