Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

Jesus Christ, is there a single line of dialogue in this entire game that doesn't come off as insufferably "witty"?
God if I don't find this style of "post-modernist" humor absolutely obnoxious.
All ideological proselytism aside, I don't know how anyone can stand this third-rate-Joss-Whedon-knockoff-by-way-of-gen-z-slang dialogue any longer.

It's how every insufferable "funny" moment in every piece of media has been written for 10 years now, and Veilguard is absolutely festering with it.

I mean, I had a fair share of hot takes here too, but I always bother to explain my point of view and why I think that way. And I keep reading this "writing was worse or on a similar level as X, Y, Z" and never following on up with examples why this is apparently so bad. Bro, when you have a contrarian take on something, just have fucking balls and back it up. It's not that much
It's just that nobody, in the history of gaming flame wars, has EVER been argued into liking a video game by someone saying "oh yeah? Well this other game that everyone loves actually sucks!" All you do is destroy your own credibility and make yourself look like a butthurt baby when you resort to that kind of argument.

Dont be a sheep.

If you like it, say why?

If you want I can point out why its average.

I haven't done so yet cause GAF isn't ready for it. A whole buncha people get overly defensive.

Buttt buutt …. Have you seen how many ways you can tackle goblin camp? Have you seen that lady on twitter??

Total sheep behaviour.

If there is woke stuff in a game, thats should be enough. Less woke, more woke who is to decide.

Also imo,
There's a difference between having DEI and pushing DEI. The latter is what's considered woke and it's what people have grown tired of.

It's the same shit as anything else. For example, I wouldn't care in the slightest if a character in game is vegan, but if the game started preaching to the audience through its narrative how immoral it is to eat meat then it'd start to bother me.
This is such a simple concept and I'm not sure why it seems so tough for a lot of people to grasp. It seems disingenuous.

Why did era abandon their Veilguard CCU thread???

They gloated and did their victory dance in the first few hours of Steam debut, but it's all quiet now

I find it so funny how people already forgot that Jedi Survivor's PC launch wasn't the smoothest and it was branded as one of the worst PC ports of 2023. People really have a selective memory if they're using this as a metric of success. I'm quite certain there was a lot of refunds for this game on Steam cause of its technical state

"Not every money needs to make ALL the money. Some of the money is pretty good too."
<Andrew Wilson disliked that>
"Unfortunately we spent $150 million developing Veilguard yet we only made $50 million in sales. Therefore we are going to lay off 20% of BioWare staff and replace all management"

"But, not every game needs to make ALL the money! Some of the money is pretty good too"

"….are you retarded or something?"

We call it being disingenuous.

Unironically, I already can guess what Wilson will say. Some bullshit like:
"Veilguard had a breakout potential, amazing response from critics and the players, but it didn't did as well in sales as we wanted"

We are dedicated to supporting this game as a top-tier single-player experience with the potential to reach a broader audience over time. Our team is carefully reviewing player feedback and implementing updates to improve both gameplay and the overall experience. Our aim is to position this release as a standout title in our portfolio—one that will provide lasting value well beyond the initial launch.

They would most likely get over 90k ccp peak today so around 10k peak increase each day would allow them go eventually get to a good score of over 300k ccp peak in 21 more days!
Good point. At this rate, in 1 year it will be at nearly 4 million CCU, larger than the rest of the top 10 Steam games combined! The CHUDs are on suicide watch!

Hell, it's still kind of crappy and it's been what, over a year?

Then watch him say something like "messaging can't take priority over entertaining our audience"

Then the reaction from BioWare employees:

Let me rephrase. You are a moron. You don't just sound like one

Yeah but lots of us are hung over from the weekend festivities still. By the time people are in a condition to play a dark fantasy RPG it'll be Monday already. Next Sunday should be 150K+ though

Sorry man but next Sunday (Nov 10) is Sesame street day and national Vanilla Cupcake day.
People won't have time to play because they'll be watching their favorite Sesame street episodes while eating cupcakes.

The Sunday afterwards though!!

They better rack up all the sales they can because the attention will be turning to Stalker 2 very soon.

It's a really good game, it's just a shame that some poorly written scenes/characters flooded the Internet and gave the impression that was the game. BioWare clearly have talented people working for them, but their writers badly let them down.

When someone says "BG3 and Witcher 3's writing is not that much better than Veilguard" with a straight face, there's really no point in having a discussion anymore. Even the people in Dragon Age subreddit are not this delusional.

this. How is it that hard for folks to understand. Just compre BG3 (and even past dragon age games) to this.

That's your difference right there. One is totally cool and great that's it's include ñd for those who want it. The other is grating.

Buttt buutt …. Have you seen how many ways you can tackle goblin camp?
That's a great positive tho?

I don't know why you have such a beef with BG3 writing or whatever, but its dumb to judge it by normal storytelling standards when one of its major goals is to prioritize player freedom and account for completely chaotic elements.

Everybody at IGN following the script. Not every game needs to make all the money? What does that even mean?

This is a really fucking stupid take. Companies evaluate individual projects based in on their individual success and failure. In some cases companies keep less profitable or unprofitable projects going because they help the company in some other way- they expose customers to more profitable products, etc. In gaming, maybe you release a smaller title that you know won't make as much money, but you may be able to bring in new customers that haven't played your other games.

But this is fucking Dragon Age. DAI sold more copies than any other Bioware game. This is supposed to be the game that subsidizes the other games.

This is such a stupid tone deaf view.
