Is it wrong that I find team fourstars cut of dragonball much more entertaining then this ?

They should have just done a brand new cartoon 100% faithful to the comic and not just DBZ- all of it. Make dragonball 50 episodes instead of the 100+ that it was and keep dbz at 100 instead of 300. You'd get 3 years worth of high ratings and old fans would actually buy it up just for the new animation. DBkai is like star wars special edition or the ET 20th anniversary cut.

For a guy who only watched the dub cut on Cartoon Network way back in the day, and only up through the end of the Cell saga, and in retrospect fucking hates the show for being such horribly paced and long-winded god-awful cack, this is basically perfect. Fantastically paced, none of the hacking of the original US dub (just all new awesome hacking), Japanese voices, a chance to see it to the end without having to suffer through the shit that is the original DBZ, etc. I read the whole Dragonball manga up till where DBZ starts and then tried my best to forget the show, so I could watch Kai as a sequel to the DB manga. Tien and Yamucha and whatnot are actual characters for me now, not just "some dudes that died at the start of DBZ."

I'm pretty damn amazed by how much of DBZ was filler. I never would have guessed that the visits to hell (or should I say HFIL) weren't canon. Goku just ran to the end of that road and that was fucking IT. DAG.

well next episode is goku coming back and fighting nappa, so it's moving along crazy fast. :lol

Nah, I think it will be the episode after. Goku will probably arrive right at the end of the episode, but before that, they have to present a few minutes of the three hour wait , the next several will be spent on the fight, and then the last bit will be spent on Piccolo's death.

So SD has actually caught up with latest episodes in terms of subbing. I'm watching episode 12 and is it me, or are they actually getting lenient on the editing a bit? They edited out some blood during Raditz's death, but suddenly, Piccolo and Nappa are bleeding more than I expected them to show.

Weird inconsistencies.

Any side-by-side pics... it's been a long time so the differences are unrecognizeable to me so far. (I only watched a part of an episode so far, have no real interest to keep watching).

What a twist! The Japanese Blu-ray release is going to be in 4:3, while the DVD release will be the cropped 16:9. :lol

Does anyone know about a difference in music? When I first watched DBZ it was the American dub I think, pretty decent voices, and the music was a lot better than the cheesy 70s stuff I heard in the Japanese version. What's the deal with Kai in that respect?

I only watched the first couple episodes, but the music in Kai sounded more similar to the dub music than the original's (i.e. more rock-ish than 70s kung fu-ish).

i never understood why the original DB wasn't aired before DBZ in most places. that was very retarded. it's like airing Naruto Shipuuden without airing the first series or randomly starting a series at the midpoint. a lot of stuff and main characters have their backstory told before DBZ starts. also, several characters that were the main baddies became just pushovers in DBZ so you never got to see their kick-ass days if you never watched the original DB.

i was very fortunate to live in a country where DB aired before DBZ and where we got the original japanese version dubbed (no hack jobs at all. i watched the series in japanese recently and it was identical to what i watched 10+ years ago, except for the voices obviously. music was intact, no censoring or ep cuts at all. it was as i lived in japan and my TV had live translation features)

i'm digging kai so far. only thing i'm not too fond is the tone downs and the new music. i prefer the original music (nostalgia kicking in) but this one at least doesn't make me cringe like the US version.
i look forward to see how fast the freeza saga turns up. next ep is the end of the vegeta battle apparently so after that they should be setting up the ship to go to namek.

has anyone been able to get the subtitles to work in ps3 media server?
I gave up on that and hooked up my notebook to my HDTV via VGA and used the USB extension cord from my PS3 for my mouse. Looks and works great. I need to get a wireless one.

I once had the subtitles working on my PS3 but something happened and they don't work anymore. So much easier to hook up my computer to my TV.

I can't believe so many people dropped Kai because of the censoring. Yes, it's a bitch that they're censoring it, but it's not that big a deal. 'OMG THERES LESS BLOOD! BLASPHEMY!' Give me a break.

We are getting DBZ with no filler. I think the pacing is great so far. I feel that, despite being uncensored and having a far superior musical score, I won't be able to go back to DBZ when Kai is all finished. It already seems extremely slow, but when I know there's a version of the show with over 100 episodes shaved off it...it'll be hard to go back.

I just pray that they don't take out Unmei no Hi, Mind...Power...Ki and other insert songs. That would be the primary reason for me to go back to DBZ once Kai is done :D

And Snaku, I recognize you from Daizenshuu EX. I'm fps_anth over there :lol

Agreed, and they seem to be chilling out with the censorship as they've progressed. I still hope the Blu-ray/DVD release will be uncensored.

I still prefer Kikuchi's score, and some of the filler. But having the story condensed down this much makes it much easier to watch. I do think it was a missed opportunity when they decided not to reanimate the whole thing, but I guess the economy made that decision for them.

And agreed on Unmei no Hi. I can't imagine that scene without that song.

Small internet, huh? :D

Yeah, they've been getting pretty lenient with the censoring. I mean, the characters are all bloody and beaten after the Saiyan battle.

I guess it might also depend on the type of violence portrayed.

Unfortunately, the inconsistent blood/dirt thing that was happening in Z wasn't fixed in Kai. wtf Toei? If you fixed Vegeta's armor, why not the blood?

In the latest episodes I am noticing a lot of remade frames. Yes, not redrawn... remade. You can easily notice it when the quality jumps around. Also... loving the pacing :lol

Yeah, the redrawn scenes are looking really nice now too.

They should have redrawn all of them. It's silly to see one scene look nice then switch to the older animation. It's really inconsistant and should have been completely redrawn from the start.

Jesus Christ.

Seriously, we're on episode 21 where in the original it's like episode 46 or something. The original had so much junk......Really puts it into perspective when people said there was a lot of filler. (never read the manga)

100% Agreed

I've watched all Kai episodes and the few redrawn seconds of animation still look hideous to me.

Yeah not the best, but you can notice the disparity in quality.

It's basically fixing the mistakes with the season sets (cropped picture, etc). Supposed to be the definitive Dragon Ball Z set.

This link can explain it much better and in more detail.

I cannot, for the life of me, watch the original DBZ anymore. I just fucking can't. I would pick this up, but fuck that. Kai just cuts out so much bullshit that it makes watching DBZ a better experience. Kai released episode 29 where in the original, we would be on episode 58. In Kai, the Ginyu force appeared, and in the original, Goku just started fighting Vegeta.

I know that everything is cleaned up and a lot of work went into it, I'm sure. But I would literally be fast forwarding the whole time.

Might have to get these. Too bad Funimation is releasing 7 volumes instead of 2.
As long as they don't stick Goku on every single one or most of them like they did their widescreen sets :|

Explain to me why I should be excited.

Funimations's Season Sets took third generation masters, cropped the picture into 16:9, screwed with the color timing, and ran them through automated Digital Video Noise Reduction set at such high settings that a ton of detail was destroyed in the process. Their "remastering" removed absolutely no dirt or film damage.

Toei's Dragon Box remastering was done by Pony Canyon using the original film negatives, removing dirt and damage, and repairing the film on a frame-by-frame basis. The result of which is absolutely flawless picture.

Here are some comparisons between Funi's Season Sets and the Dragon Box.

Here's a rather large write up about why the US Dragon Box release is so significant: http://daizex.com/general/feature/

Yeah, I hear you.

Also, very informative post Snaku. Glad I never got the season sets, those shots are terrible.

Glad I only ended up getting seasons 1-3 of those sets and was able to sell them at a decent price!

Yes, everyone should buy the Dragon Boxes. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills... I never thought I'd see the day where Dragon Box ads for a North American release would be appearing on GAF and other websites :D :D :D

Also, the Ginyu Tokusentai song is my favourite thing in Kai so far :lol

So what are the chances of a Kai like cut coming to US/Europe? (Distant dreams probably but Blu-ray would be nice :D )

Chances are extremely good. DBZ is Funimation's top seller, and they won't miss a chance at releasing a new product which essentially is guaranteed to print money. They'll probably wait until they're finished with the Dragon Box releases late 2010/early 2011.
