Have Japanese broadcasting standards become stricter or something? I've noticed in recent years that shows have become more shy about showing explicit nudity and ultra violence.

What really gets me is the fact that all the "hardcore" fans bashed the hell out of Funimation for years despite their improving efforts to stay true to the original, and now that TOEI is hacking the fuck out if it, everyone is all, "wow cool shit bro."

I remember the shitstorm when FUNi announced the season sets would be in cropped widescreen. Now that TOEI is doing that and worse, it's suddenly a good thing. Serious fucking hypocrites.

Werd the fuck up. I say we find those fanboys and throw them off a cliff.

Yeah, just saw episode 3 and the censored blood was just... :|

Chances of me buying this if it gets released to the US have reduced drastically.

I like violence as any of you... but... its just... blood. It did look stupid but you guys should just enjoy the nostalgia or something.

I am gonna be watching it, remember some of my younger times. Last episode was badly edited though =/

wow, they did that. that scene was the reason started liking anime more than American Cartoons (I was 10yrs old back then).

At least FMA ep03 didn't shy away with blood

I saw someone watching Queens Blade before and thats pretty heavy on the nudity.

Why the fuck was this episode censored? I wanna blame Evangelion somehow.

9am time slot. Granted, I don't know the original timeslot for DBZ on its first airing.

Seriously though, the time slot basically explains why they cut some of the violence down. A little disappointing for older fans but Kai is not really aimed at us.

It's nice to see early Vegeta with black hair and yellow armour in that jpg.

I'm fine without the blood since i'm use to it not being there from the UK version.

the censoring is kinda weak, but I did like that they re-colored Vegeta and Nappa to fit more with their final looks. I have no plans to stop watching the series, at least not until well into the Namek arc. These early parts of DBZ didn't really have the slow, numbing pacing found later in the series, so that's when it will really benefit from fixing.

I think its fine so far. I don't really care about the censorship, its not the reason I watch the show. As far as the editing feeling jarring, I'm getting used to it. My only real problem is the moments where you can notice they added some new animation, it looks pretty bad. I'd rather they don't bother adding in any new animation if they aren't going seriously re-animate the whole show.

So any chance the thing that happens to Krillin on Namek is not edited? It was never shown here in Germany, they aired a horribly cut version of it where you it almost didn't make any sense.

I'll keep on watching, I'm slowly getting used to Son Gokus voice.

you mean when freeza rams his horn through krillin and shakes him back and forth?

IIRC he was coughinig up mad amounts of blood, so probably

(do we really need to be vague about spoiling DBZ?)

DBZKAI comes on at 9 in the morning vs like 2 in the morning.
What was Dragon Ball Z's timeslot when it was airing?

Damn, kinda weird seeing the old Vegeta and Nappa colour mistakes getting axed. Theyre weirdly nostalgic.

They even made a figure set of the colour variant :lol

What's this I read? Censored DBZ in Japan? Say it ain't so.

FUNI never got a break from DB fans because of their editing. They better be hard on Toei too.

That is shitty. Really shitty. I was kind of fine up to episode 2 but episode three was pretty bad.

1. There are scenes towards the beggining with so much grain and age, I was wondering if they did anything at all to improve it. Suddenly I see updated color, lines, and effects but they clash with the older scenes they didn't redo. It's like someone spliced together some homemade remix with the older ones. Ugh.

2. The music did not hold up this episode. It did in the first two but it was weak in ep 3.

3. The cutting out of the blood and holes in the body is very strange. I've seen worse from similar shows recently so I'm wondering why they decided to edit it. Really stupid. I can't believe I'm angry at Toei for fucking up their own shit.

The voice acting was good though. I can't deny that.

I'll still continue to watch the series. I'm guessing they'll release a DVD version with all the blood thrown back in.

Wow so much bitching.

I just finished watching episode 3 as well and i think it looks ALOT nicer than funimations remastering.

Big deal about the blood. So what if some blood isn't flying out of his chest on that slow motion scene. You can still see him bleeding from the mouth while he is talking to piccolo.

Oh and just so you know....If you were shot in the chest with something like what piccolo used...basically a laser with electricty surrounding it. You would not be bleeding profusely like that anyways. The beam would have burnt everything inside while it went through therefore cauterizing the wound...Hence no blood.

anyways...

I was kinda hoping that the show was going to look like the opening but i am fine with the way it looks now. Just look at the comparison shots posted above. Kai looks way cleaner than funimations.

I have Season 1-5 of the remastered funimation set. If they are going to condense this down to around 100 episodes and it maintains this quality i am going to sell my Remastered sets...Hell i might just put them up for sale right now.

Seems Dragonball Z is getting the same amount of censorship One Piece has... which really isn't surprising in the slightest.

I noticed this too in episode 3, it was pretty jarring to watch the scenes clash like that.

It sucks about the censorship but I'll still watch it just to see how it turns out with the reduced episode count.

To be honest I didn't know what happened until after I posted and checked a video on youtube... In Germany it was really just Freeza saying something followed by a cut to Son Gohan being upset and sad.

I hope FUNi doesn't pick this up. It's just an obvious cash-in that contributes nothing to the franchise other than another notch on the 'shame' belt.

I'm said it from day one. Fuck FUNi's work on DBZ. Top to bottom, it's been absolutely, ballshatteringly terrible (well, the dub during the Buu saga was decent). The fact that Toei is basically milking the cow again with a FUNi style hackjob and edits just makes me shake my head.

If any other show was getting this treatment, people would be flinging feces. But hey, it's their show. Let em rip it up. It'll be a laugh when Toei/FUNi attempt to sell this to people who bought DBZ...again.

Your rampant hate-mongering hyperbole amuses me.

I guess I'm the only one still watching?

This episode made me realise how weirdly does the afterlife stuff stand out from everything else in the series. It's like the stuff during Goku's training comprises a sort of liminal phase between the fantasy adventure feeling of DB against the hardcore sci-fiesque grittiness and self-importance of DBZ.

i haven't kept up with the one piece anime since water 7, is the anime itself being censored or are you referring to the differences between the manga and anime?

So apparently Goku reaches King Kai's planet soon. And by soon I mean episode 6 soon.

They weren't kidding when they said they were cutting down on the filler :O

that means none of that princess snake crap??? gosh that was a waste of time except for that part goku eating.

Just watched Episode 5. Looks like they cut out ALL of the Snake Way stuff. Not that I mind, personally.
I think that's awesome. Noticed a lot of shots that were redrawn. Keep it up!

Which fan-subs are you guys watching?

I saw the first 3 episodes...and I am really enjoying it.

I never really started the series from scratch when I first saw the original version.

So I am actually watching episodes that I vaguely remember or have never seen before.

I think I watched Vegeta/Goku saga and then on, in the original series.

Nostalgia may be playing a part, but I am really enjoying this series.

I was watching Safety Dance subs, but for some reason they either died or their releases justaren't timely now, since episode 6 just came out and they are still on episode 4. Now I've switched to Suppiido Fansubs because I don't have patience anymore. Hopefully, Safety Dance will come back soon, cause SF's translations are baaaaaad.

The problem is nobody gives a shit about Kai anymore after realizing what an awful hackjob it is.

The "re-drawn" frames, which are really just poorly traced and then touched up by someone with zero talent, are the ultimate kick in the nuts for me (besides the horrendous censoring).

Oh, and the music doesn't fit at all.

It's such a shame, too, because TOEI hit a home-run with the 2008 special. Perhaps that was handled by a separate team.
