Precedent of mediocrity doesn't somehow legitimize it IMO. This isn't any better than Frieza and 17 but the saiyans/power level stans gotta decide who can get stronger and how cause... reasons.
Yeah, part of the reason why I don't like Gohan's fandom at times. And I also don't like that Gohan seems to get free power-ups (cramming for a day of training and getting as strong as Goku is basically a free power-up). Outside of Super Saiyan 2 it never feels like he earned the right to be that strong.
I wouldn't call it mediocrity since Frieza and 17 got their power over a period of time, granted Frieza's was short but he paid for it since he didn't master his golden form. That is how I accepted Piccolo getting so strong after the Frieza Saga and before he fused with Kami. Although Goku's power boost before he became a Super Saiyan was boarderline BS and it was saved by the fact that Frieza still kicked his ass until he transformed.
I was referring to Trunks when I mentioned the mediocrity. His super saiyan asspull transformation is vomit and nonsensical. (Since he's a hybrid, that garbage set a new precedent for Gohan)

It is no more than an asspull than Super Saiyan 1 and 3, so I am not sure why people have problems with it. Even then, the transformation only put him on par with everyone else, unlike the other transformations I mentioned. He also earned it after getting his ass kicked, emotional damaged, losing almost everyone he cared about. He earned that transformation.
From what I have seen, only Gohan gets a pass for asspull power-ups because 'he's special'.

The issue I have with Trunks transformation is that no one seemed to acknowledge it, like can I get one damn line from someone reacting to what Trunks just did? Seems like a big deal with the music and the blue aura.......Goku? Vegeta? Black? No comments? ok............

Gohan's ass pull has been constant so I've come to expect it Trunk screaming himself to God level is when I fully realized the characters are just gonna be as powerful as the plot demands and decided to work with it

That part of his character became much less prominent after the Goku vs Piccolo time skip as the series changed tone and he became less prominent. Now they're doubling down on it and making it his entire character and I hate it. The old pervert manga trope should have died a long time ago.
I have a complete collection of the manga. The worst of the sexual stuff was in the first 2-3 volumes and that was all originally written in the mid 80s.
I think it's probably worse when it's animated. A visual gag such as Roshi falling in the toilet while trying to perv or having him, Goku and Krillin dress up in lingerie to do martial arts so that Launch will is something the reader is exposed to for just a few panels. The rapey stuff in this episode however made my skin crawl and I couldn't wait for it to be over. There was nothing funny about it.
Because no one really cares, least of all Black who still kicked Trunks' ass. Even Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan had a mild reveal with Frieza going 'Super Saiyan with blue hair gel'. Golden Frieza, none of the heroes really commented on it except, 'oh, Frieza's new form'. Super Saiyan God was also treat with a 'meh' reaction in the movie. In general, transformations in Super are not treated as a big thing because everyone has a 'I've seen this' reaction.
Gohan is as powerful as plot demand the character. Just because he's always that way doesn't mean it's okay, especially compared to the BS Trunks went through to get his power. And him screaming himself to god level, Goku practically did the same thing for Super Saiyan, so why are we treated what Trunks did as a new sin?
That is because Roshi got less screen time. If he was around more, there would be just as many pervert jokes as shown in the specials and movies.
It's funny to someone since Toiryama kept using them and it was all over Dr. Sump. It just isn't your brand of humor liked dead baby comedy.

Goku complimented Frieza and how strong he got, Beerus acknowledges the power of SSG, you had Goku himself explaning SSB and others talking about how his ki can't be felt anymore. Just anything.
What happened with Trunks made it seem like he didn't do anything, this is the Future Trunks arc isn't it? Why should I care about Trunks' plight and anger if the show is gonna treat him finally exploding like a wet fart that no one cares about? They try and give Trunks his moment again with Spirit Sword which was better but that has other issues.

This felt a good deal more rapey for two reasons.
1. He physically overpowers her. Roshi drags her into a room and starts pawing. Its beyond his usual copping of feels. Shes freaking running from him.
2. The lack of the swift reproach. For all his nonsense, he gets no knock to the skull, no machine gun spray. No punishment.
It being 'cleaner' than those old scenes doesnt really matter.
It's surprising to see new content like that and Roshi's done creepy shit but I don't remember him getting that physical before.
Goku not giving a fuck just reaffirms he's a legit sociopath.

I think we all just witnessed the worst episode of Super. Its got my vote at least.
Just like Tien is a sociopath that he didn't care that Roshi carried up a woman against her will or even left them alone since he knew how Roshi acts.
And unless you're joking, I suggest you read with a sociopath is.

That's the key distinction. Even when Roshi got physical with pafpaf in volume 2 the joke was that he was doing it to Oolong, the joke was on him.

It's Roshi. He's always been like this. Must we remember that he asked Krillin & Goku to get him a pretty lady (which turned out to be Launch) either as part of their training or as a requisite to train them (can't remember the exact details)? That is pretty much on level with this, if not worse.

I feel like we need to stop giving anime a pass for treating sexual assault as appropriate material for a goofy gag scene. This episode was an embarrassment. There are certainly bad examples of this in the original series too, but times are changing and I don't think this should fly anymore. Not to say the concept of a pervy Master Roshi making women feel uncomfortable is totally off-limits, but the execution here is weirdly dark and off-putting. It certainly reflects badly on Japan's attitudes towards women when this is fair game for a kids' show.

Yup. Would rather a more bloody battle (a la Saiyan or Frieza arcs) than these sort of jokes. They're not exactly very funny tbh.
Though let's not act surprised at Roshi being like this. This is just how Roshi was from day 1. Thankfully, for the most part, DB in general tends to not do these sort of jokes all that often, at least not quite like this.

How hung up are some people getting about Roshi? Afaik, many anime released these days are still perverted similar to how they used to be. I don't know the age demographic for Super in Japan, but I imagine they're going for teenage boys. Many popular anime stoop down to this to pander, and I'm not just saying this to point out it's ok just because others do it. I'm saying, yeah, it sucks but you clearly haven't watched other anime if this bothers you and I'm certainly used to having to explain cultural differences in TV broadcasting to my friends. Stuff like this happens all of the time in TV outside the US. I used to see foreign TV when with family and was put off by how perverted they could get. Different target demographics, but nothing that would be accepted US channels I imagine.
