I'm sure it wouldn't have done that much damage to Goku (he was in base!), but it was more likely done as a reference to 17's fight against Piccolo. 17 could have died from this back then
So the moment he saw that same type of attack he reacted by instinct and tried to protect Goku

Instant transmission actually has a lot of extra benefits this tournament, given that if you were fast enough you could use it to get back on the stage after being knocked off
Of course, but that sequence to taking the attacks in order to counter and him blocking the attack from Botamo at the end of that fight is still him not dodging. At least it is a joke that can be taken in the sense of how Gohan doesn't need to dodge since he is OP now. About time that Gohan got to shine properly in Super.
That's one of the only examples of a battle royale shown right, someone finally interrupting an ongoing fight.
That was shown a little bit in 97, then 98 and 99 focused more on contained fights.
I wish we saw more stuff like that. I know it's hard to do and incredibly ambitious, but if they're going to do a battle royale, fights should be interrupted every few minutes, in episode time not DB time.
It was done a little bit in this episode.

Yes, exactly! And there should also be people clashing in the background more often than they are now. It's weird how little we've seen the "two opponents clashing in the background, one sends the other flying into another battle that's happening in the foreground" shtick considering they have all the justification in the world to mix things up like that.

It's hard to watch at times. There's been some scenes this arc with amazing art, but this whole series looks super low budget. It makes me sad.
