I find it funny the the square pr team is trying to backtrack the NX announcements since it's obvious, they were not mean't to make that announcement at the event.

No. Actually by looking at the stream and considering what he said, it was the last minute decision by Nintendo to allow SE to mention it.
SE's official statement is saying they are considering NX release (which is pretty much confirmed) but they can't say they ARE releasing it for real until Nintendo reveals what NX really is at first.
(I also think development for NX hasn't started yet).

So this is what happens when a PlayStation console is the market leader....

Also that list is missing Breath of Fire 6

So this is what happens when a PlayStation console is the market leader....

No, because otherwise we would have fonder memories of the PS3.

This is what happens when Japanese companies decide to use well documented externally built and managed game engines rather than spending years building their own solution from scratch.

No way. If that were the case it would of happened with the PS1 and PS2! And wouldn't of happened when the 360 / Wii was the leader!

..... Hmmmmm

There are external factors of course but yeah this sort of thing does oddly seem to coincide with the Playstation console being on top.

It was tongue in cheek, but I think it's a variety of reasons why we are seeing a resurgence of JRPGs.

1. Easy to develop for PC like architectures.
2. A fast install base with PS4.
3. Unreal Engine 4
4. And a base dying for a quality JRPG.

I'm amped ^_^

PS3 was 3rd last gen.

PS3 was the presumed market leader before the generation started, and was the primary focus of Japanese developers leading into the generation. The problem with the PS3 was that it was very difficult to develop for, so when you add those complexities on top of the standard development practice at the time of constructing game engines in-house you get the clusterfuck that was Japanese console gaming during the last generation.

Developers making games that they want to play will actually sell.

Dragon Quest games in that list is a big reason why we are excited. Stop being so anal, the entire thread is not a list sheesh. Let people have some fun, let it become a problem before you start policing threads.

We can only hope.

Some of that stuff is definitely day one like DQ11, FF15, KH3, TLG, etc...but I do hope Japanese devs see strong sales against from not only there home country, but western audiences as well. If it doesn't work, we can't say they didn't try. Now all we need is Capcom to step up with some next-gen RE/DMC/DD/Maximo!

Is it honestly anal to want to talk about Dragon Quest instead of general ps4 rpgs in a topic about Dragon Quest? You would think all this platform nonsense would have ended after the annoucement and we could finally discuss the game and what we'd like to see in the game and iust general Dragon Quest stuff. It feels like there is no place to really discuss DQ here as the community topic is pretty dead and anyone wanting to talk about the game in here gets drowned out in a sea of PS4. It's obviously controlling the discussion here, whats so bad about making a topic about the list and how excited you guys are for it since it seems to be a huge point pf discussion in here? Probably gonna have to go back to mostly ignoring DQ topics or something i guess if this is how it's gonna be

we really need an 'xbone outside in the rain' picture imo

below 150 thousand first month. For consoles in Japan in particular, i'm thinking they will be looking closely at the player base.

On the Japanese blogs, i'm already seeing tons of "not buying cause its not on PS3/Vita", "3DS is better cause its 3DS" ect.

And a whole lot of gloating about NX. It seems all there is these days is fanboy clashes between Nintendo fanboys and Sony fanboys in Japan. A whole lotta "wwww goki" and "wwwww boo-chan"

Lol

The list gets brought up because it's a damn impressive near dream come true list and well the initial reveal of DQXI really didn't show much of anything. We know nothing.

The JUMP magazine is supposed to have a big spread about DQXI on 8/3 so we should have more to talk about then with the actual game. For now we just know it will look amazing.

Huh, I totally made a mistake earlier about the random battles vs non-random battles. My bad to whoever I was responding too. I was operating on a couple of hours of sleep just to watch the conference and could've sworn I saw some sort of random battle in the 3DS version.

I do still hope that there end up being substantial differences between the two versions, more so if both are localized. It would be nice, both to take advantage of each respective system (even in small ways) and also for people that are planning on buying both versions.

I'm more stoked for the greater adoption of external game engines than anything else, because development can get started a lot faster and much easier to port to different platforms. The latter I find to be more important, since I believe that it's a fool's errand to put all the faith of reviving Japanese console gaming market in one console. But we wouldn't need to worry if it becomes trivial to put games across multiple platforms like PC and other consoles.

So WiiU was the presumed market leader and the primary focus of Japanese developers this gen?

The PS3 had overtaken the Wii in regards to both marketshare and third party successes at the end of the latter's lifetime in the Japanese market. It was a completely different situation from the absolute dominance of the PS2.

So naturally, the new market leader that Japanese developers flocked to instead was the 3DS.

well if you aren't paying attention to the top screen while traveling, battles are basically random.

I know it's amazing all the games that are coming, it's honestly a huge surprise after last gen. I don't know really where else to discuss Dragon Quest around here and thought maybe people would want to discuss the series and new games in general after the annoucement since pre annoucement was mostly dominated my platform talk as well. I understand why everyone is excited about the list, i'm just saying that it's become a huge point in these last few pages and thought that if everyone really wanted to discuss it, why not make a new topic so this could stay Dragon Quest.

It would be so neat if you could do the same with PS4 version and switch between random and on screen encounters. While i thought IX was cool with the on screen enemies, I always have a thing for random encounters and not knwoing what could hit you at any moment.

I think Japan is starting to realize that a lot of PC gamers are willing to give JRPGs a shot, where as a lot of console players are more prone to big budget AAA types.

Now if they'd just make sure that the ports to Steam are quality ones, we'd be set. I can't get to mad though, this is their first foray into the PC world.

I'm sure we'll get all the PS4 titles here (Heroes, Heroes II, Builders, XI), but I want the 3DS ones as well (VII, VIII, Rocket Slime 3, Monsters 1 and 2 remakes, Joker 3) :(

I feel like the time is up for the two Monsters remakes, and if they continue that series here they'll jump straight to Joker 3, which is upsetting.

The window for VII is still open but not for much longer, 3DS is on the way out in the west it seems. The original VII looks dated as hell, and never got released for PAL anyway, so that's the one game I really need in my collection.

I wonder how PS4 is going to handle the battles? Hope they do it like IX where you see everyone running up to the enemy, thought it was kinda neat how they did the action. Hope it's speedy too! Wonder if they are gonna do the regular DQ UI where it's a balck box with white outline. I love the simplicity of it so i hope they keep it in the localized version, kinda made me sad in VIII not having it and IX really didn't either outside the basic item menu

The crazy part about Dragon Quest XI is that it's basically three games in one, all with the same characters and story. This game will be compatible with almost any platform SE wants to port it to (there will definitely be an iOS port by the end of 2017).

Yea, I think it's definitely coming. It'll be really interesting to see how a mainline title like that does on mobile so soon after it's release. And unfortunately the style is so charming that I know I won't be able to resist buying that version.
