Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS) |OT| Cor Blimey!

Last bit of suggestion is Fisticuff for Jessica as well if you don't like the abilities above. At some point, like 52 or something skills in Fisticuffs, Jessica gets Evasion Up or something that increases her evasion a lot when she does not have a weapon equipped. This helps her survive in post game where defense isn't as useful as just dodging attacks. Since her defense will always be lower than the rest of the party, this was useful.

Just to note. the Fisticuffs evasion skill doesn't activate unless you're ~10 levels higher than the enemy you're fighting. For the post-game this means being over level 60 for the original post-game and maybe even higher for the new post-game stuff(I have no idea what level the new post-game bosses are) so it's not really going to come into play until really late.

Going Fisticuffs is still nice for Magic Burst though, which can be pretty useful in a few battles.

I got the game yesterday and nostalgia just rushed in. DQ8 was the one that made me a big DQ fan so relieving it again is making me nostalgic. Speaking of nostalgic I went through my old printed guides (thanks gamefaqs) and I found my old skill build xD

Hero - Sword/Boomerang
Jessica - Whip
Angelo - Sword/Bow
Yangus - Axe

Hopefully I can still do a bit of the casino exploit so I can get that Gringham whip, made my jessica into a monster.

It's been noted earlier in the thread, but I should probably reiterate: twin dragon lash has received a sizable nerf in the 3DS version. It went from 1.5x damage per strike to 0.9x damage per strike, which makes it weaker than regular attacks on multiple targets. Oomph was buffed to be 2x damage, but it only affects the first hit of multi-strike attacks. This means twin dragon lash is still okay against bosses, but not the powerhouse it once was. On the other hand, Jessica's 100 point knife skill sudden death was buffed immensely, to 1.8x damage (which makes it 3.6x damage with oomph). So that's something to consider.

Oh damn, must have miss this earlier in the thread. This makes me sad and happy at the same time since whip has been my jess main weapon every playthrough but Knife buff makes me happy since Knife was often my subweapon

Time to make jessica an assassin

So with Whips being nerfed, what would be the recommended build-up route for Jessica? In the PS2 version, I started with Whips up to 23 points and later alternated between Staffs and Sex Appeal. How would you recommend to start in the 3DS version?

Even on PS2 my I always went all in on Sex Appeal and Staves, and then up Fisticuffs enough to get the Evasion boost.

Can I follow the old PS2 guide for getting the chests, exploring and building the characters or have they done much rebalance to them?

Is it true that they got rid of the Super Saiyan hair in this version?

Oh christ I hope not, though I haven't hit the point where you can get super high tension yet

Have you guys noticed some inconsistencies with the little blinking arrow at the bottom of the text box when a conversation is ready to be advanced? I'm watching a conversation right now between Valentina and Kalderasha and sometimes the arrow appears, other times it doesn't. This is all within the same long single conversation.

Ok GAF. So I'll admit I didn't own a PS2 when this first came out. But...I do like jrpgs including the Cold Steel games, Pokemon. Considering that, I am wondering if I should dip in on this for ~$24 via the current Best Buy Visa promo combined with GCU...

If you want one of the greatest JRPGs of all time in the palm of your hand, then yes

Absolutely. It's a great game, and the 3DS port has some nice changes and additions.

Yep. I've noticed the same thing.

Just started playing this. It really can't be stated enough how much better this game looks when actually playing on a 3DS as opposed to looking at pics/videos online.

One thing that is annoying me though is that you can't use the analog to cycle through menus. I'm constantly trying to use it first every time.

My main gripe with the 3DS version is that the cursor memory in the inventory menus is busted. In the best implementations, it correctly remembers the item you were transferring and the last recipient you transferred to, which made moving items around a breeze. Doesn't do any of that in this version.

Yes, noticed that, it's fucking bullshit. Pain in the ass to say the least.

Just started this last night, it's been a long time since I played a Dragon Quest game (9 was my first and only), took me awhile to remember how to save!
Does anyone know if this has Circle Pad Pro support?

My 12yr self was farming metal limes at the ruined abby. Today, i'm doing the same thing. Full circle...

DQ8 has a special place in my heart. Love this game.

I started this game last night after recommendations from GAF to play this one as my second DQ game (after DQIX).

How much should I be worried about skill point distribution? Am I going to fuck up my characters irreversibly if I do it wrong? Which skills are must haves? I'm only at the first dungeon with the MC and Yangus so far.

so with oomph benefiting on first strike, is the uber falcon blade not as useful anymore? I like using that more than any other sword

That aspect of oomph hasn't changed, so if you liked it in the original then that won't change here. Oomph received a solid buff from 1.8x to 2x in this version.

That is great to hear.

I think the biggest improvement overall is the Alchemy pot, I remember taping the controller down and waiting like ten minutes for weapons to be complete, though maybe the gratification of crafting something really good will be less since you don't have to wait anymore

So I'm about 20 hours into V. Will the mechanical changes in combat and things like that from VIII prevent me from going back to V? I'm not sure if I should finish V before playing VIII. Thoughts?

No, and V is not that long anyways, you might be close to finishing, if I were you I'd just finish up V before jumping into VIII

I have a question, does toxic dagger still work against early bosses? This was one of the reason why I went Whip/Knife during my runs in PS2 DQ8 since TD was really great against those early bosses.

Hopefully yes since I love Toxic Dagger

It's funny how much I hate the human character designs in DQ games, yet l absolutely love the monster designs. This runs better than I thought it would. Pop-in is a bit distracting, but not that bad

Where does the idea that the original Oomph was only 1.8 come from? The Game System FAQ on GameFAQs seems very technical and intensive and it has it as 2x. Likewise the Japanese Dragon Quest wiki is also very reliable and has it as 2x.

If I'm planning to do the music swap eventually but not right now since I haven't set up CFW on my 3DS, am I safe to start playing without worry about losing my save later?

Killed the very first metal slime I met with Hatchet Man.

Meh, have reached a point where I can't put more points in Yangus' axe skill (level 16, 57 points is the maximum it allows me), so what to do with the rest? Anything besides Axes that's a worthwhile investment? Have already put 10 in Humanity. I suppose it's not recommended to dump points in Axes and Sickness, right?

Edit: I know most people recommend to put points into Fisticuffs for Thin Air, but I don't know if it still makes sense at this point in the game (I'm at Maella Abbey now)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Did the music swap with the JP version, and it sounds absolutely fantastic.

I forgot how much I loved this game. And since it's been over 10 years since I've played it, I'm loving that I'm getting to rediscover everything about it that feels like it's the first time (although I remember quite a bit of the basic plot).

Either way, anyone who is on the fence about getting this I would definitely recommend it.

Popped it in last night for a minute.

Not overly fond of the voicework so far but I imagine it will probably grow on me.

Game looks ok on the 3DS screen but it really would have benefited from 3D.

Music on the other hand sounds really good. I can live without the orchestration since I never really played the game before to form any attachment to it.

I have no idea when I'll actually get around to playing the game though.

Ok the inventory/equipment menus and really the menus overall seem kinda weird compared to most JRPGs I've played. Like how you have to give the item to a party member before they can equip it. It's taking a bit of getting used to.

I just listened to some of the original music on YouTube... Needless to say, I hate myself for keeping my 3DS completely updated.

Since some people have been asking, I posted a guide for how I added the orchestral soundtrack to my game over in the 3DS Homebrew Thread. You'll need custom firmware installed on your 3DS, obviously. if you don't have it yet, follow https://3ds.guide - you can currently hack any 3DS on any firmware with no specific games needed or anything - the exploit is in the 3DS Sound app!

Doesn't matter at all if you are, you can still install CFW.

I've been perfectly happy with the non-orchestral music so far, myself. I haven't noticed any of the shrillness that 7 had at times.

I'm so fucking nervous to do this. Especially with my eshop games.
