Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS) |OT| Cor Blimey!

Is there a way to reset your skill points in the 3DS's version?

I wish to experiment with the skill distribution.

If there is none then i will use the same old setup.

Hero Boomerang/Spear
Yangus Axe
Jessica Whip
Angelo Sword/Staff

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone else, but I don't believe so, unfortunately. But really, you can't really go wrong with skill point distribution if you're just trying to clear the story. End game bonus dungeons and trials, different story though.

What would be the optimum build for end game bonus dungeons and trials? I heard Courage build for Hero is the best with Whip for Jessica?

Had my copy actually a day or so early, thank you amazon. It's amazing how this game was amazing when it released and is amazing even to this day. Dq has always been one of my favorite series ever

DQ8 was the first DQ released in Europe period, so there was no history for anyone there to work from unless they imported from elsewhere.

Yeah, Akira Toriyama was the only reason I knew of DQ before 8's European release. I remember seeing Dragon Quest VI on a shelf at a family friend's house. Thought it was some bootleg Dragon Ball!

Very happy to have DQ8 with the familiar voices on 3DS. This is a game that really brings me back to a time and a place, I'm looking forward to going through it again. One minor gripe is the lack of 'L' as a confirmation button during battle. I can live with it though.

I miss the L select too, auto-advance text option would be nice also.

Sorry if this has been covered in the thread already- I'm new to DQ8. Been wanting to play it for years and never got around to it beyond screwing with it on an emulator (and damn does it look good with all the bells and whistles turned up on an emulator), so I preordered the 3DS version and will finally be getting to it. As someone who loves JRPGs but has never been super crazy about certain conventions, and specifically random battles, I'm ecstatic that they added in the DQ9 system of enemies roaming the field. Besides enjoying this big difference, will I specifically be missing out on anything from not playing the PS2 version, besides sharper visuals?

Not really. The added stuff and features FAR outweigh any negatives.

The 3DS version is feature complete plus more. It's really the visuals (which admittedly is a pretty big downgrade on 3DS) that you'd be missing out on, and I guess if you don't patch it in, the orchestral soundtrack. Oh yeah there's some censorship like Jessica's outfits and a couple of cutscenes. But you sacrifice all that for a lot of new content and much smoother gameplay.

For everyone asking about optimal skill builds for endgame content, remember that each character gets 350 points at level 99, so you can cap three and get halfway up another tree without any seeds.

If certain groups of enemies are the same in the 3DS version, it is easy to get to 99. It was farming for Seeds of Skill that made me quit playing many years ago. Well, that and the stomach turning thought of what you have to do to complete the Alchemy list.

If it's still like the PS2 version, mixing and matching is much better then maxing out individual skills. Some of the most useful skills are midway through, and you don't tend to get much at 100 points. The problem is having to look up how many points you need to invest.

I don't suppose there's a way to see what you're getting before you invest the points in this version?

The point allocation screen has the list of what skill you unlock and how many points you need if that's what you mean.

You are probably aware of this, but you can hit the b button to make all the text appear at once to get through it faster.

This is a great version of my favourite Dragon Quest game. Still very early in the game, just on my way to the Waterfall Cave.

Starting the game again - my worries lifted and a huge smile spread across my face just seeing little Munchie scurrying through the undergrowth. Hearing the first words of Yangus and King Trode. Strike a light, Guv!

I freaking love Ricky Grover's Canning Town accent and the way it is used in the game. I was a fan of his even before this game and had seen him live several times.

It was frankly bizarre at first that this wonderful JRPG was conceived so far away for a culture quite different than my own - but contained a heart and soul that made it feel so very close to home. Courtesy of the incredible translation and voice work from the British company Side.

I'm going savour this beautiful thing, and its now portable nature means I can fit in when I'm on the go.

Looking forward to Dragon Quest 11 hopefully bringing back the feel of this masterpiece.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I was about to say how much I liked her new VA. Sounds softer and less aggressive than the original, but overall captures the character's essence well. I like her original too, of course.

I see someone already posted a mainline DQ (3)DS collection picture, but still, here's mine:

It's a family reunion! And who would have thought that the USK logos would be good for something? Turns out they provide a convenient space to put the cartridges for a pic like this.

Anyway, I've played the game for some 7 hours now and I'm already liking the improvements made over the PS2 version. The world feels much more lively with the monsters roaming around, the menu system is so much faster to use and being healed on level up is a godsend. Also, that all characters are brought back to live when your party gets wiped out instead of just the leader. I hate that in DQ7. Although that may have aready been in a thing in the PS2 version of DQ8, I'm not 100% sure.

There was only one instance of 'you need to talk to every NPC to progress' that really irked me in DQ7 (in the desert).

It just so happened that I needed to talk to the guy that I had just finished talking to as part of a 'cutscene' again.

I'm quite happy to chat away with most of the NPCs in a DQ game.

Started last night but was too tired to get out of the starting town. Graphics aren't as bad as I feared on the 3DS, I see what people mean about the blurry text but I can live with it

My main gripe with the 3DS version is that the cursor memory in the inventory menus is busted. In the best implementations, it correctly remembers the item you were transferring and the last recipient you transferred to, which made moving items around a breeze. Doesn't do any of that in this version.

I like boomerangs. They're my favorite DQ weapon just because they can hit EVERYTHING in a battle each turn. In other games I'll sometimes have two or three characters on whips/boomerangs just to deal with mobs swiftly. They're amazing for early to mid game.

Once I got boomerang in the original, I put all points to the Hero for boomerang and never gave him another weapon. I recommend doing that. I still found all the boss fights to be easy (compared to some other DQs) even with the boomerang.

Concerning the build for the hero, I've got a question for VIII veterans... So far (Lvl. 12) I've put most of my points into swords and a few into courage. I know that it's recommended to max out Courage in the end, so the points going into that stat are out of competition. My problem is that you don't get good swords in the first part of the game, so I considered putting a few points into spears as well (as people recommend it for the hero anyway, and you should stop putting points into sword about halfway through anyway). So should I put swords on hold for now and distribute my points between spears and courage, or is it already too late for this and I should rather stick with swords + courage?

2 hours in, loving the game! When do I access the photo scavenger hunt? And how do I put stickers on my photos?

Thanks! I'm loving the photo mode and the online faux street passing for sharing photos and posting Miiverse! Little things like this make the 3DS such a fun little system, shame it's going to be lost on Switch.

Yeah - I don't want to skip any dialog though!

Persona has an option where voiced scenes advance themselves - that's more like what I was talking about. I want to hear the voices, but instead of having to listen, then press X after every line, they could put in an option to automatically advance the text after the voice clip plays.

Overall, it's a pretty small complaint!

Is there any point to the big gold medal things lying around town? I tried taking a photo of one but nothing happened

Yeah Bravely Second had the same Auto read option. It would've been nice here too. You can press the L button to advance text so that's nice when you're reading one handed during those dialog scenes.

What would be the optimum build for end game bonus dungeons and trials? I heard Courage build for Hero is the best with Whip for Jessica?

I usually go for high Courage for the Main Hero when I want to get through the post game stuff. As for weapons and such, you should look at each skill list and see what you like. I would recommend at least getting the Hero skills in Spear, Courage, and Sword to get:

Spear > Lightning Thrust for Metal Slime hunting since they are hard to hit and will give you massive experience, lower miss rate than other critical attacks
Sword > Dragon Slash for post game bosses
Courage > 1/2 MP Cost since your Hero is a great spell caster and healer, especially when you get Omniheal (fully heals all allies)

If you want more stuff to think about, think of Fisticuffs. It's a skill tree most people don't think about since it's not as cool as holding an actual weapon, but some of the skills are worth it, especially in post game. For example, Defending Champion is useful since it reduces damage by 90% when you use that skill for that turn. It's useful for certain bosses in at the end game.

If you want to focus on swords, then get up to at least Falcon Slash. If you have Angelo specialize in swords then get him Falcon Slash, too, then you have two massive damage dealers, especially when you use the tension/psyche system.

The rest is just experimentation. You can't really mess up that bad, but I found those skills and abilities for the Main Character to be useful.

Just noticed your question regarding Jessica:

I think the best build I've used for Jessica is a mix between Staff, Sex Appeal and Staff. Basically nearly max out Staff and Sex Appeal while only spending 23 points to get Twin Dragon Lash in Whips. The Whip is useful for post game, especially with the Twin Dragon Lash for post game. Staff just has too many benefits to ignore, especially for Caduceus (basically Midheal for 0 MP) and Kazing (revive all at max health). Sex appeal is usual for random battles, but Hustle Dance was super useful since it heals like 80-100 HP for everyone for 0 MP, but best part is that it works with the Psyche Up/Tension system.

Last bit of suggestion is Fisticuff for Jessica as well if you don't like the abilities above. At some point, like 52 or something skills in Fisticuffs, Jessica gets Evasion Up or something that increases her evasion a lot when she does not have a weapon equipped. This helps her survive in post game where defense isn't as useful as just dodging attacks. Since her defense will always be lower than the rest of the party, this was useful.

Anyways, just food for thought. If anyone else has suggestions, then please feel free to add to them. These worked for me, but perhaps aren't the best builds.

It's been noted earlier in the thread, but I should probably reiterate: twin dragon lash has received a sizable nerf in the 3DS version. It went from 1.5x damage per strike to 0.9x damage per strike, which makes it weaker than regular attacks on multiple targets. Oomph was buffed to be 2x damage, but it only affects the first hit of multi-strike attacks. This means twin dragon lash is still okay against bosses, but not the powerhouse it once was. On the other hand, Jessica's 100 point knife skill sudden death was buffed immensely, to 1.8x damage (which makes it 3.6x damage with oomph). So that's something to consider.

Ok, I didn't know this...so...ignore my suggestion with whips. Maybe don't focus on Whips until Twin Dragon Lash... I still think Whips are useful for random encounters. Thanks Aeana. I'll focus on Knives and see how useful it is in this version.

Really want to try the game again after life stopped me from finishing the PS2 version. What do you guys think of the 3DS port so far?

I think it's a general consensus that it's a great port despite the graphical downgrade from the PS2 game. The added features and positives outweigh the negative (i.e. Graphical downgrade and Non-orchestrated soundtrack). Amazing game.

I just reached Alexandria. Gonna go see you know who.

Yep, Lady Rosalind is a great mom.

Cheers for this. Im going knife for jessica then. Any other noteable nerfs or buffs?

Right now im going 59 spear, 100 courage 100 sword for hero. I MIGHT get 12 boomerang as well havent decided. Going scythe with yangus this time around. Probably bow and staff for angelo like usual since I dont want two characters using swords.
