Doesn't matter at all if you are, you can still install CFW.

I've been perfectly happy with the non-orchestral music so far, myself. I haven't noticed any of the shrillness that 7 had at times.

Thanks. The last guide I looked at said it had to be a lower firmware. Let me get started then.

I'm so fucking nervous to do this. Especially with my eshop games.

https://3ds.guide/ is very detailed and thorough. As long as you carefully read and follow the guide without skipping any steps, you should be fine. Of course, there's always at least a small risk when you do stuff like this, so it might not be worth it for you if the only reason you want to do it is DQ8's soundtrack. Like other people have said, the MIDI music is fine, just not as nice as the orchestra.

There are a lot of other benefits though, such as removing the region locking. So you could import and play DQ games that were never localized, like Theatrhythm Dragon Quest (playable without knowing Japanese, especially if you're already familiar with the menus from Theatrhythm Final Fantasy) and Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D, which got a fan translation.

Just started playing, I noticed that when you check for download items, the game saves. This can be done on the overworld too.

Does this mean we now have overworld saves, or does the game do something weird if you restore from one of these? Not tested it yet.

I started this game last night after recommendations from GAF to play this one as my second DQ game (after DQIX).

How much should I be worried about skill point distribution? Am I going to fuck up my characters irreversibly if I do it wrong? Which skills are must haves? I'm only at the first dungeon with the MC and Yangus so far.

You should check out a couple posts before yours. I gave some suggestions for main character. But really you can't screw up that badly if you're just trying to clear the main story. Just experiment and have fun

Cheers for this. Im going knife for jessica then. Any other noteable nerfs or buffs?

Right now im going 59 spear, 100 courage 100 sword for hero. I MIGHT get 12 boomerang as well havent decided. Going scythe with yangus this time around. Probably bow and staff for angelo like usual since I dont want two characters using swords.
Isn't Gigaslash what you get for 100 on courage or sword, so you could stop on 82 for swords if you're going to do courage?

You also have quick saves on the overworld and in towns (I haven't checked dungeons), which you can choose not to suspend the game after making. And the save isn't deleted upon loading.

Amazon now expects my delivery sometime before March 1st lol

I can wait though, I'm not needing this in my veins ASAP.

100 sword gives you Gigaslash.

100 sword + 100 courage = Gigagash

Just recieved my Amazon copy. Came abit beat up and slightly dented. Not happy with they way amazon packed this game, but I can forgive. Got minor gripes alreadya about the game. Text size is so huge in the screen. I can understand that it was OK playing on the big screen but they could've shrunk the text. I love that I can play on portable but the graphics don't feel as crisp as DQVII. Wish Nintendo would make 3DS games compatible fle the switch as I think it could be upscaled.

I cancelled my Amazon order, complained, and got a $20 credit lol.

Picked up Gravity Rush 2 instead. Will just get this later down the line.

I never receive games ON release day. I have a tight work schedule and its a big inconvenience. Whats the best method to use if I were to complain. Maybe they will finally do something.

I did just that and found lots of great information on the previous page. Thanks to everyone who posted info!

I have a different question now about armor. The MC seems to be able to wear "cloth" and "armor". Is there any reason to wear the cloth?

There aren't really classes of armor in DQ8. There's specific pieces of armor that each character can wear, and you should wear what gives you the best stats. Note that stats doesn't just mean defensive power, but also things like "halves fire damage" or things like that. Clothes and wayfarer's clothes are just the weakest pieces of armor in the game.

Basically what Aeana said, but just to add on to your armor question...Here's an alchemy walkthrough from Gamefaqs that I think is super useful. I don't use a walkthrough most of the time to play the game, but the alchemy walkthrough I enjoyed since I actually liked the alchemy system.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/583527-dragon-quest-viii-journey-of-the-cursed-king/40808249

It tells you what the best pieces of weapon and armor are at big points in the game. You can totally overpower yourself using the alchemy system so only use it for your own amusement or if you just want to see what's possible whether it's armor or weapons.

Also, for anyone new to the game, I highly recommend putting in 8 skill points into Courage for Main Character right off the bat to get "Zoom" in order to teleport to every town/big dungeon instead of using Chimera Wings. It's super useful. In addition, I think for newcomers, it's highly recommended to give the Main Character a Boomerang, even if you don't specialize in Boomerangs, since they're so useful for taking down groups in random encounters. It's a must.

Just started (actually, working on catching up to where I was when I played on mobile). Wow, the voice acting in this game is fantastic.

Perfect guide. Got mine CFW'd and currently awaiting my cartridge dump before following your other guide to swap the music. Thanks again.

That crazy Japanese Moon Language
Has fisticuffs/thin air been needed in this version or was it always this useless after Marla Abbey? Should I just focus on axes?

I like Thin Air even after Maella Abbey, but if you don't like it, then focus on Axes since there are some great abilities there like Helm Splitter and Executioner.

Fisticuffs and Thin Air is only useful if you want more attacks that affects groups of enemies.

Bookmarked that alchemy guide. Will check back in on it once I get alchemy. It has taught me not to sell anything yet though!

I got a Boomerang and got the Crosscutter throw skill, and it seems like it does less damage than just a normal attack, except it'll hit one monster for a little bit more. Given how many other monsters take 2-3 points less damage, overall it seems worse. It is nice with boomerangs to whack multiple monsters at once though.

Is this the type of RPG where you are expected to regularly buy gear upgrades from shops or should I expect to find most of my upgrades out in the world and dungeons. I just got to Alexandria and there's some nice gear here but I don't want to blow all my money if I'm going to just find them for free in the next few hours.

Wow! I didn't know that CFW was now available on any firmware. That's amazing! I already have Homebrew Launcher through VVVVV. That guide looks daunting. It's a lot of steps. I'm not sure exactly why I would want CFW.

I can dump my carts into digital files that show up on my Home screen? I guess that would make it worth it. I would definitely need a bigger SD card though.

One of the biggest mistakes people make in this game is that they try to stay up to date with what's available in shops. Don't do that. Small boosts in attack power or defense aren't worth it. And if you find armor with magical or breath defense, that is worth way more than a bunch of points of defense, too.

You will want to buy things occasionally, but you'll find a lot of things, and you'll be able to make a lot of nice things with the alchemy pot as well. Make sure you check bookcases as you go to find recipes.

If I were you, I'd stop at the Boomerang skill that gives you +10 to Boomerangs just to help out during random encounters. I never liked the Boomerang skills until the higher levels. I usually keep Boomerangs for random encounters to speed through them. I specialize the Hero in either Swords or Spears and Courage on my more serious runs. Sometimes Fisticuffs for the hilarity if I don't want to tackle the post game content.

When I first played through the game on PS2, I always fought enough to get half to most of the new items at each new town just so I can over power the enemies in the area. It's a habit from most other RPG's. However, in subsequent playthroughs, I just do enough to get by since I know how tough monsters in each area are.

With all that said, you'll find a Scale Shield in the upcoming dungeon. That'll save you a little bit of money. My piece of advice? If you want to be challenged with the upcoming boss fight then just spend a little to get yourself geared up for the dungeon. Play through the dungeon, then once you're done, you should have more than enough to fully equip yourself before moving onto the next town, before the boss fight. When you get to the next town, fully equip yourself. Fight the boss using the fully equipped Hero and Yangus. Then the alchemy pot will be unlocked and you can totally make some nice things for yourself at this point.

I personally recommend getting up to 25 boomerangs for power throw, which does the same damage to every enemy instead of decreasing as it goes down the line. The +10 attack is higher than power throw, though, so the above advice is good too.

That's a great move, too, if you're short on skill points. The reason I like +10 attack for Boomerangs is because I usually set my entire party to "Fight Wisely" AI Tactics so I don't have to control my party during most random encounters. I only take off the AI during harder random encounters or boss fights. Otherwise, I just let my team do the work. When there is Power Throw, the Main Hero sometimes uses it and sometimes doesn't under "Fight Wisely" AI. But a great move when I use it manually!

Boomerang is good enough to be your primary weapon even with zero points in but I always pick up to Power Throw anyways.

My first eight points though always go to Zoom. I hate going to the menu to get Chimera Wings and will max out Courage anyways.

About 4 hours into my first playthrough of this game and I am loving it. Coming off DQ7 it is nice to actually be able to avoid the visible enemies since you aren't jammed in tight halls constantly! I kind of want to just say fuck it on Lost Odyssey and put all my time into this now.

Same here, I got Zoom quickly. I also went ahead and got that Whistle skill for the big guy... what a waste. It just summons a battle. I need to read a wiki to see what all the skills do before wasting points.

Whistle is good for farming metal enemies in certain areas.

Not sure if I should go back to DQ VII or replay this one right now. I was liking my playthrough back then but SMT just kinda caught my attention a bit more and I haven't returned ever since.

At any case, it'll be my first time replaying VIII since I beat it 10 years ago. Curious to see how it holds up now that I've beaten the majority of the series. I went with a sword build (Hero) the first time through so I'll probably main spears this time around. I'm also curious to experiment with the
new characters
.

You can speed up Bingo in the Casino, and Quick Save functions as a "save anywhere" feature instead of just suspending, so those help a lot with the casino. Unfortunately the bingo slime is as much of a cheating asshole as ever.

I just got there... I love the quick save feature, haha. How much have you won so far?

Isn't roulette the game of choice for scumming in DQ VIII? It's been awhile but I remember not using slots.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Nearly didn't beat the kraken boss. Yangus left with 4 HP and hero dead. Oof.

I got up to 3500 tokens and called it a day. That's enough for the Rune Staff and Titan Belt which are the ones I really want. I'll save the rest of my Casino time when I get to Baccarat where the real goodies are. I would have also liked the Agility ring, but yeah fuck that slime :p

EDIT: Just got a Holy Lance as a reward for the photo quest, wow. If rewards are this good then I should be doing a lot more of them. The stamp thing reminds me of Ni No Kuni.

That's the first boss right? I got wiped out my first try too. Leveled up one level and got him on the second try.

... I doubt I will get wiped again! Boomerang POWAR!

Currently installing CFW, hopefully get the Orchestra soundtrack installed tonight and play it tomorrow!
