It definitely is :)

Can't wait to pick up my copy tomorrow! Legit tempted to CFW one of my 3DSes so I can add the orchestral music back.

Boomerangs are overwhelmingly better for regular fights. You will get through them much faster with boomerangs than any single target weapon (boomerangs hit all enemies). Yangus's club skills in general are pretty blah, I strongly recommend going axes for him. His first axe skill is an ability that lowers enemy defense (invaluable), and he also learns a skill to crit or miss, which is great for hunting metal enemies.
Any more tips are greatly appreciated. I beat it on PS2 when it first came out but I forgot alot. I do remember I kept leveling up certain skills and regretting it later. I dont remember using boomerangs or much else besides anyones first weapon type.

Anyone else turn voices off? I find that with them on, I read through the text far faster than waiting for them to speak it so it seems kinda pointless to me. I hate that I don't have the patience to just let them say what they need to and instead want to quickly read what's going on and move on.

Also, I seem to prefer using the L/R buttons for the camera vs the cstick which is a first for me. Guess I'm just used to it from past games.

Game plays great so far and the load times for battles don't seem to be as bad as I thought they'd be.

I'm so tempted too, the orchestra adds so much to it. Do you buy any chance know a good resource for doing this?

If all you want out of CFW is the music patch, I'd say it's not worth the hassle - the synth version is rather good from what I sampled.
CFW is totally worth it for other conveniences it provides though

Got my copy today (!), and for those wondering, you can turn the voices off of you want to (but why on earth would you?).

That's great to hear, thanks!

(but why on earth would you?).

I've played DQ VIII back when it was released for the PS2 and somehow I always noticed that it had a very strange flow with voice acting turned on.
I thought it was very noticable that voice acting had been later added for the western release.

The voice acting itself was fine quality wise, but it was very overemphasized, and listening to it felt like putting the brakes on the whole experience.
Once I've turned off the voice acting, the game had a much improved flow. It just felt "right" to me.

I have never heard about this. What is this exactly?

It's a postgame hiddenquest/event kind of thing. Where a fairy of a random color has a chance to spawn in certain parts of the world. The fairy's name is Stella I believe she is the one from DQ9. She gives you different seeds based on her color if you meet her. Rainbow colored is the rarest to meet. Never managed it despite trying for a good amount of time. If I remember correctly it's also an event that can only happen once per day. So if you want to meet all of them once you have to reset for the right colored one to spawn

Just started it, played for about two hours. Some notes:

  • It's weird that there's no road (cobblestone texture) in the opening credits movie when the group gets to Farebury and passes the burned-down house. The road is there in-game, however.
  • Obviously the graphics took a hit for the 3DS port, but it's not bad overall. I will say that having the enemies appear onscreen (in lieu of random battles) works well visually as well as mechanically. The world seems quite a bit more alive than it does on other versions because of that.
  • I wish New 3DS users got more than just C-stick camera support (which is inverted and can't be changed AFAIK...grrr). They couldn't use the system's extra oomph to, I dunno, enable 3D support?
  • The options to toggle faster battle animations is quite nice, especially for a 70+ hour game. Legit surprise: battles play out in 60 FPS!! I didn't see that coming at all, but it makes all the great animations look so much smoother than it did on other platforms. I hope it'll still be that way when it's more than just me and Yangus...
  • You now fully refill HP/MP when you level up! This makes the early game SO much better-paced. I was able to go straight from the beginning of the game and beat the waterfall cave boss while only visiting the inn once - and I really didn't even need to do that, just erring on the side of caution.
  • The new snapshot mode is cute. I like that you can also exchange shots over the internet, which will definitely help people who can't easily streetpass and/or who haven't set up HomePass. Haven't received any through the latter yet, but I imagine that'll change fairly quickly...
  • Was the Hammerhood enemy in the Waterfall Cave always voiced? This seems like a new addition. Or maybe it's just been too long since I list played a version with any voices at all.
Overall it's really nice, can't wait to lose myself in this crazy adventure again.

You actually can change the camera control settings for the cstick. It's just referred as the dpad in the settings but it affects the cstick too.

You're right. That wasn't voiced in the PS2 version. Also the one with King Trode when heading towards the cave seems newly voiced too.

Great game and all but... Am I the only one not liking the dialogue font at all? It looks out of focus and blurry. I find it really distracting.

What's the challenge like in this game? VII was pretty easy going, is it better than that? Will you actually die, ever?

VIII is harder, enemies are stronger and numerous, só if you're not careful, you can be taken by surprise. Also every place there are stronger enemies than normal so you'll need to be careful.

VIII is harder I think. The enemy groups are usually significantly larger and generally hit harder, but it's not a massive difference. It provides a decent challenge and does so early on, especially if you don't grind.

I want to support Dragon Quest in the west but I know there's no way I will play this. I still have my PS2 hooked up and I just played through this game last year on it.

I might still buy it just because I'm so happy that they are bringing these games over.

My delivery from Best Buy got delayed to Monday for some reason so I'll have to wait a bit before I can jump in. Looking forward to it in any case.

Will be picking this up today after work, but probably won’t be starting it for awhile as I have too many other games to finish, first.

It has been mentioned that all the characters who had VA lines in the Japanese version now have VA lines in other regions as well, a feature that didn't quite make the cut on the PS2?

Is it me or the enemies are dropping more exp/gold than the PS2 version?

They destroyed Alchemy as a money maker (every item depreciates in value when you sell it), so I hope they did something other than blue chests to compensate. I'm kind of peeved that there are a dozen of the things in the very first area, and then 1-2 in each subsequent area. Not sure how/when the contents respawn, either.

I'm in the area after some happenings at an Abbey now. Definitely taking my sweet time and rediscovering this world. It is a great experience, partly because it has been so long since the PS2 version that I've forgotten everything.

I'm stoked to get this, why did I have work today ;-;?. Logged in close to 600hrs in the original PS2 with multiple play through.

For players that played the jpn version already, how early do you get Red and Morrie? Since in the original
once you beat dhoulmagus, Jessica gets taken by Rhaptorne and you'll have to face her. That boss was pretty tough since there was only 3 party members, also cause Jessica was my 2nd best character after MC, that Casino exploit for the Gringham whip OPOPOP. Everything changes if Red/Morrie joins before that.
Also how is Red and Morrie? I'm tempted to use them on my 1st run through to change things up and also would the unused character still gain exp (ala ff10) or no?

I'll also miss random encounter. I remember in one of my latest run, I was lvl 99 before facing
Khalamari
lmfao. Turbo controller was hilarious, I remember just leaving my ps2 on with the Turbo Controller running in circle while I went to school. Did the same for the Casino. Turbo controller 100 tokens which loops it since it'll keep betting the same amount you did from before.

Man now Im excited >< 7 more hours to go before I can get my hands on one of the best JRPG I ever played.

I'm in the same boat as you; cursing the fact that I have work today.

I believe you get Red after
Pirate's Cove
, and Morrie after
clearing rank S in the monster arena
.

Man Streetpass / DLC from like 3 minutes into the game nice. Now I just need to decide which games Streetpass to execute. I think Pokemon X/Y are useless now that the online pokemile shop is closed.

Damn I remember
needing the Ultimate key for that since you need the sea chart to unlock it

Does anyone know if they relocated a lot of the chests or changed their content or if they even changed the dungeon layouts? I would really appreciate if I could (for the most part) still use the awesome Piggyback guide book for the PS2 version.

wait, so Morrie is optional? Is Red optional too?

I don't mind it. I guess I'm conditioned to it though, after playing so many DQ games. The game is balanced for this specific kind of inventory system.

I'll just do for the 3DS versions.

Orchestral version
MIDI version
Thanks a lot! The MIDI version is still pretty nice, actually.

A lot of the improvements to the game sound great, but I remember not being too fond of the original. I also skipped VII on 3DS, even though I wanted to try it out as new way to get into the series.

I have IV on DS as well, but I couldn't get past the first town because of the accents. I'll try playing IV again because I feel like I have to give the series another chance.

Anyone know where I can purchase the physical version of this guide? I looked on Amazon and Ebay, and only the Bradygames version pops up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Never mind, found it. Thank you.

I believe she joins automatically as part of the story, presumably after
you bring her the gem or whatever it was she wanted for the horse

edit: nevermind, someone above said when she joins, I don't even remember a
pirate's cove
