Excellent game,one of the most underated RPG of last generation.
The combat in this game was such a dope and the world was extremely well designed with nice mob encounters.
If this game had some form of online play ala Dark Souls,then the end game would be really strong as it has all the ingredients of a great game

Being an Assassin is great as it allows you to use swords, daggers, bows, and shields. Plus it has some really nice skills like invisibility and one that increases your speed. It's my favorite vocation in the game. It's too bad pawns can't use hybrid vocations. Magick Archer is also a fun vocation to mess around with.
Edit: When using the shield, try using shield drum as that can draw in enemies and make them focus on you.
Edit: And I finally got the platinum for this earlier in the week! Wasn't that hard at all considering this is an RPG.

So I beat the game finally. Ended up hanging on the dragon right where he couldn't touch me, felt like some kind of exploit. Just hacked away without being touched for a good 15 minutes. Solid game overall, I'd say the following:
+Combat is deep but being a fighter sucks
+Pawns are cool
+Decent loot but takes a while to get going
+Solid final battle
-Story sucks, non-existent
-The world is boring
-Lots of back-tracking mindlessly
-Felt like I only had to go to Gran Soren and two other places for the whole main quest
Also, why the hell was my character making love to Fournival, lol? What a random event that came out of nowhere. I'm looking forward to NG+ and the Dark Arisen expansion, already started the post-game quests.
Overall: 7.5/10

Hey GAF, I recently brought my PS3 to work (in order to tackle the backlog at lunchtimes) and borrowed Dark Arisen. I have a vanilla DD save which I haven't touched for about a year...
If possible, I'd like some advice in how to get back into this properly without feeling overwhelmed.
Muscle memory came back pretty quickly, and I'd forgotten how nice it feels just to run around and fight. I'll try to break down my niggles into simple question form:
1. Is there a lock-on? I forgot...
2. I main an Assassin, my primary pawn is a mage, and secondary is a warrior. Is this an okay setup?
3. The random beast encounters are cool as hell, but I spend 30mins whittling away at a Griffin only to have it fly away on its last HP bar. What am I doing wrong?
4. I'm not looking forward to returning to Gran Soren and seeing how much rotten crap I have in my item box... I remember hoarding a lot of items for crafting but not knowing when/how to use them. What sort of things should I aim to keep/look out for? Do you recommend a purge?
5. I took a look at my active mission list and almost fainted. I'm a sucker for side content and tend to get bogged down very easily. Again, should I purge and concentrate on the main quests? I remember feeling underleveled early on and don't want the bigger battles to feel like any more of a slog than they do now.
Any other advice is also welcome. Thanks in advance!

2. Personally, I hate Mage class. I'd say change your main pawn to Warrior or Sorcerer and get a Mage just for healing and buffing as a support. But to be honest, most party set ups work fine as long as you are the primary damage dealer.
3. Just too weak right now, I guess. Try shooting explosive arrows at its wings when it takes off or cling onto it.
4. I don't think stuff rots in the item box, but I am not 100% sure on that. Since storage is unlimited, keep everything since you might end up needing random things to upgrade your weapons and armour.
5. If you are going for the platinum, you have to do every side mission. Since you may be underleveled, I would take on the monster hunt ones. The ones that target specific big monsters in dungeons around the world. Those are challenging and require exploration which helps you level up as well.
Extra advice: Now that you have Dark Arisen with a vanilla save, you have a free Eternal Ferrystone that lets you fast travel around to different port crystals in the world. There's a few permanent ones like in Gran Soren and I think Cassardis, but you can find others around the world and put them down to fast travel between them.
Also: Wolves hunt in packs.

Depending on your class, nothing. Those bastards never want to fight, the one that would appear occasionally outside Gran Soren would do like one pass, shriek, and then it would rack off. Took me so long to get a crafting material from it, grrr. Most frustrating opponent in the entire game, never wanted anything to do with me and had the distinct advantage of being able to fly away as soon as it saw me.
I'd be entering or leaving Gran Soren, I'd hear it shriek, and I'd start sprinting my arse off towards it while telling my pawns to go H.A.M., only to watch the prick fly off into the sunset. It just needed the Benny Hill music.

Supermanisdead, you're right, food doesn't rot in storage. But I still have so much stuff in there. Feels like it's going to be a chore to go through everything to see what can be combined and so on.
I don't think I'll go for the platinum. Is it possible to continue exploring the world and finish side quests after clearing the game?
I think I'm doing a bunch of errands that lead me to the monster hunt quests right now. I'll see where this current quest takes me while keeping your advice in mind.
And thanks for the Eternal Ferrystone tip! I literally just found my first port crystal, so it's good to know I can use fast travel with abandon from here on out.
endlessflood, I see, so they're just annoying bastards. I actually took down the one outside Gran Soren just now! Feels good. Going to stock up on explosive arrows and such to make future encounters more manageable.

So I just got a couple quests to find some idols and give them to people. I had no idea where to look and so I looked it up and I found out I can only get a gold one from escorting that one little shit perfectly around the city. I already failed that quest because I accidentally attacked her. Oops?

Yes, sorry.
Don't worry about it too much, the loot you get from the shop upgrades from the gold idol eventually gets (majorly) outclassed. You'll just have slightly weaker (but serviceable) gear for a short period of the game.

I haven't played in many years, but I think my pawn was pretty damn beefy (I killed Ur, did multiple BBI runs, etc. etc. ). I'll send you a friend request.
