Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

One of the prebuilt character templates is exactly that.

For those that may not know, a character's physical build does have significance in Dragon's Dogma, unlike say Dark Souls.

From the wiki:

It determines the appearance of a character but also affects its stats. The weight of a character has a significant effect on their speed, stamina and other mechanics.

Lighter characters will prove to be quick and energetic while larger characters can hold more items without losing performance and will find it easier to lift and throw items, enemies and other characters. Medium weight characters will strike a healthy balance between all these categories.

Character weight is affected by a number of factors, the main ones being Character Height, and character build and musculature.

- Heavier classes are able to activate pressure plates faster.
- Heavier classes have a proportionately larger hitbox; smaller classes have a correspondingly smaller hitbox.
- Heavier classes are able to grapple and immobilize targets better.
e.g., Harpies can't fly off with a heavier class clinging to its legs and the heavier classes are able to hold the Harpy on the ground, immobilized, more easily.
- Different body parts also can change the character's height and weight.
- Walking speed is affected by leg length, not weight. Run speed is affected by encumbrance.
- If the character is too light, they may have to grab onto a pawn or carry more items in their inventory.
-The maximum amount of stamina given can vary based on the chosen weight class and are directly affected based on weight rankings. Characters gain 20 stamina for each weight class above M and lose 20 stamina for each weight class below M. This is commonly referred to as "True Stamina". More details regarding this can be found on the Stats page.
- The Leg-Strength skill is more effective for LL and L class characters as it increases their base movement speed by one weight class. This does not affect stamina use.
- The Sinew skill is a proportionately larger percentage increase to lighter characters because of their lower default carrying capacity.
- In Dark Arisen, Sinew will stack with the Trophy Boots, or any L3 Bitterblack Armor
- Greaves or Boots with either of the two appropriate weight-capacity bonuses.

I'm pretty excited to play this on PC. Dragon's Dogma is a game I desperately wanted to love when it came out, but performance issues + the unhelpful interface and quest setup + the original fast-travel method really put a damper on my enjoyment of the early parts of the game. Then I picked up the Dark Arisen release for PS3, which... I was enjoying until the sticker goo on the used disc I bought destroyed my console. I've had bad luck with this game, looking forward to finally giving it its due. Wonder if it'll be easy to mod the soundtrack so I can fill it with Agalloch tunes or something for maximum forest adventure feelings.

From the wiki:

I think I have seen this before (I might have even asked about it lol), but is there ever any differences of places one character type can go and another can't?

Like, small holes only Light characters can crawl through, or boulders only Heavy characters can remove from the path.

there's some holes only really tiny (child or midget sized) chars can enter but they're only in one place iirc so not much of a difference

There is an area or two in the whole game where only a small Arisen can go through, actually (don't think the reverse is true). But from what I recall, it's just some not-that-useful loot. So it's kind of a neat little bonus if you make a child-sized Arisen haha.

I'm like right at the tip under min. I trust the port will be really well done for PC, but I think I might have performance issues with my current rig. Will I be okay?

Note that being short allows you to run under some of the larger monsters, and that can be pretty useful to dodge stuff/reposition.

That said for the most part, it has very little impact. If you min max, you'll probably want a larger build due to reduced stamina costs, the longer stamina regen isn't much of an issue due to consumables, although technically that's also true for stamina costs, just less drinking if you consume less so you save inventory space. It's also useful to carry stuff around but with pawns that's not much of a problem either.

There's some holes in one place where a smaller char can go through, but they're just shortcuts and stuff. Nothing that matters.

Thank you guys!

I guess I'll buy it when the price drops since I just checked my backlog and have some "short" games I should finish first.

Hmmm...

I might make a child character now =X

Anyway, I'll see. Interested in messing around with this character creator. Thanks for the answers!

I have the same CPU. My only bottleneck these days :/

Anyone actually play a full on mage? I remember trying it back then and it's fucking awful and painful at the same time with the long cast time for higher tier spells and being so vulnerable.

I remember trying to be a Sorcerer after being a Strider, it was like going from 70 mph to 10. Not fun.

I didn't start as a sorcerer but I have been through the endgame stuff as a sorcerer. The higher tier spells are always a risk but there are always low cast time spells like comestion to help you get control of things. Stuff like miasma is also good for damage. I took sorcerer pawns to help me charge up spells faster and having a shield fighter for aggro helps too. But generally for 1v1 situations you apply the proper elemental buff, then unleash charge bolts from your staff (the holy one always looked cool to me), you can kill the bosses pretty fast like this. Wyrmking Ring also helps a lot, it helps charge spells faster and if you get multiples through repeat playthroughs you can give it to your pawn and others if you wish.

It's certainly viable but it might be something I recommend when you want to mix things up, since it can seem like a hassle at times and early levels will feel like a drag. You can kill things very fast if you know how to set yourself up.

Guys, im debating on getting the game. But can someone recommend me which advanced/hybrid class to go after?

I'm debating between Mystic Knight and Magick Archer

Ditto, I ditched that idea fast.

Great class for pawns though, my dude was a great healer.

Yeah I ended up going back to my Ranger and using pawns with support skills that can cover what element I need on my weapons and heals. I hadn't played Dark Arisen yet so I wonder if they got some tweaks because they just felt awful. ;/

I would not recommend mage class to any new people if nothing changed.

All this talk of hybrid, I've decided to try Magic Archer for release.. Hopefully it works out...

Anyone curious as to why you'd want to level up as a certain class, stat point gain is based on your class so if you level as a warrior then switch to ranger, you'll be gimped.

Simply put, you level as a fighter early, you get something like +str each time you level up which doesn't help ranged at all.

I'm fairly certain my PC is fine for this, but I wanted to check with you guys before I get it off Green Man Gaming.
