Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

I'm at this really, really weird juncture where I'm escorting some NPC to an encampment and the ambush and environment is stacked in such a weird way that I'm fighting a troll, undead, wolves, bandits, and some godlike bandit knight guy.

Its a hard only because I can't save and end up having to run a gauntlet while keeping the NPC alive.

Why can't you save?

I finally gave up on the game, the second trek to bluemoon tower was enough for me to stop. I did one more quest after that and pretty much gave in. I wasn't happy with my character anyways. I went fighter and then switched to Mystic Knight. I find mystic knight to be much more defensive oriented and has a lot of magic abilities, and since I wasn't playing that style I just got bored.

I will try again later with a new character most likely strider/assassin, but definitely but more effort into it, I consider the first play through more about testing the waters.

The second trip to bluemoon tower was probably the worst troll and design in the game, but I put a port crystal there just incase since I wanted to loot the thief's den later and explore so I just teleported.

Nah - worst troll in the game is
when they instruct you to head off for the Waycastle between Gran Soren and the Encampment, only to deliver news to you once you're there that you need to head back to Gran Soren immediately.
If this were any other game I would have stopped there and then.

Haha that was definitely annoying but at least it made sense plotwise.Still it was bad game design.

Btw something i wanted to ask you guys is why i don't see any Mystic Knight/Magic Archer pawns roaming the land? Those two classes are not available to hire even when i'm in the Rift.
Is it because i haven't switched to those classes yet myself?

Oh that's strange because i remember in one of the director's 2 hour playthroughs (months before the release of the game) they encountered a Mystic Knight pawn in the wilderness.I guess for some reason they abandoned that option later on...

Think I got hosed with The Hero achievement. I found and completed all but three quests on my own the first time through, started up a NG+ on hard, figured, you know, fuck it. Let's go for broke and get everything stupid cheesemint now. I looked up a guide to find the three quests I missed, also did every quest required again, just to make sure. Last quest I needed, turned in, nothing popped. Checked my quest log with a few different guides to make sure I didn't miss anything, nope. Only thing I can think of is my pawn doesn't have three stars for the
Griffin's Bane quest. Killed it before it ran off both times through,
but like yo dude ... quest said completed. Does it really not count if you finish it that way?

I don't think I have it in me to do another playthrough just for that.

Did you do
Mettle Against Metal
? For some reason it doesn't show up in your Pawn's list. It's the one where you
fight a Metal Golem in the lower part of Witchwood, behind Selene's house
.

Okay, so my Fighter pawn starts learning moves I'm jealous of, so...I decide to restart to play as this pint-sized melee fighter instead of having him as my pawn. Still not sure what sort of pawn I want to give him yet.

DragonsDogmaScreenshot-3.jpg

Looks more or less like my old pawn, but with a different hairstyle and posture.

DragonsDogmaScreenshot_1-2.jpg

I found a couple new areas in Cassardis for the first time. First, this little room with three chests...

DragonsDogmaScreenshot_2-3.jpg

...second, this little cave with a headstone in it. I harvested a Conqueror's Periapt at its base. I swear, I discover new things with each new playthrough.

DragonsDogmaScreenshot_3-3.jpg

I've never played as a minimum-height Arisen before. Might finally be able to see where those Goblin holes at the Shadowfort lead.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those Goblin holes at the Shadowfort. I might edit my character later and go down. I still haven't tried out hard mode. Losing my levels is too much for me to bear.

I'm tired of playing the prologue every time I want to make a new character... bad enough the hoops I have to jump through trying to juggle save games. Between online storage and usb drives, keeping all that sorted.

That is really annoying about this game. :/

Right outside the door of Adaro's house is a little wall to jump over, leading to a sheer cliff that drops off onto a little ledge containing the chests. On a lower ledge you'll find the cave with the headstone in it. Keep jumping down ledge by ledge and you'll find yourself on the beach.

I really can't believe how long I waited to play this game. The demo really turned me off in a big way, so I simply ignored it until a little over a week ago. I then, more recently kept seeing all of these random people citing this game as their GOTY, and I was wondering if they were really insane, or if I had missed something major. I think the game has a ton of flaws (which most everyone already knows), but the good parts are just so damn good that they make it worth playing. The game really had the makings of a classic, but ended up just being a really good game. I hope that if they make a sequel that they listened to all of the valid complaints and work on ensuring that same crap doesn't show up again.

As for the argument for and against fast travel; it's "okay" to not have it for your first character I guess. But if you plan on playing it multiple times, you would have to be kind of crazy to think it's fine as is running through all of the same areas countless times again. The world is too big to be doing that a second and third time. So I have no qualms about self-duping about four portcrystals.

Also, since pawns can't be hybrids, how does the top ranked pawn on the 360 have regeneration? That's a Magick Archer augment.

Why dupe when you can just
buy Portcrystals from the Black Cat in NG+ and beyond
?

Also...you can dupe? Huh, never knew. Not a fan of that sort of thing myself, anyway.

Haha, well that's good to know I guess. I was actually thinking that if there were more in the game that I didn't know about that I'd just trash them when I found them anyway. I haven't hit NG+ yet.

I'm not a fan of duping in the sense that it gets more items that shouldn't be out on the internet out there, but I don't see any issue with it if it only affects you. And another reason to do it for this game at least is because of the way you can only have one save per account. I suppose they did that just because of the way the pawn system works, but it's bullshit to have to completely start over if you failed on an ultra vague quest due to it being so obtuse.
I had no idea about the golden idol until after I'd already given idols to the shopkeepers. I also had no idea about how easy it was to fail the Escort quest that gives you the golden idol
.

Since there's no way to redo those than to start over, I simply started over, backed up the previous game and sent all of the gear over to my new character.

Also, hiring pawns that are much higher level is not really that good. The pawns might be able to live longer, but they are still pretty stupid and contribute about as much as a lower level pawn unless they have really great gear. The largest reason to not bother with them is because of the insane XP cut they cause. I hired my level 43 pawn with another account and was getting right around 40% of the XP I should have been getting. You need to be within five levels (below) before you get what you should be I think. If you're higher level, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, it's on the ledge directly above the ledge with the headstone. I love finding hidden nooks.

And regarding money, it's especially a non-issue on Hard Mode. Feels like every other Goblin is dropping a giant money bag. I love it.

I'm not talking about the black cat. I'm talking about using your backed up saves to transfer items to other pawns on any additional accounts you have. Like I said, I'm typically against that sort of thing as well, but not if it only affects you. And yes, it does work. I have four portcrystals before NG+ and they all function.

Mine was initially setup to be Mitigator/Utilitarian, but I've since found out how kind of bad Utilitarian is for a caster. Mine randomly shifted towards Pioneer as well, but only because whenever you use the "go" function, it seems to get them to attack more often (much sooner). Ironically, Mitigator/Pioneer is actually pretty goddamn good for a Sorcerer and bow user. Even if they don't rush ahead (mine actually doesn't), they become engaged much sooner, and they don't just stand there as enemies are incoming, waiting to get attacked before they go on the offensive. Mine's not primary though, so maybe that makes all of the difference.

Also, what's up with almost every single Strider/Ranger having the god-awful Dazzle Blast, or whatever it's called? The ability is good for a player, but not a pawn. The pawns seriously use that ability almost 90% of the time and no real bow skills. Hey look, Fracture, Comet/Deathly or Tenfold Flurry. Let's toss fireworks instead!

Can't go wrong with a mage.

I've always been fond of strider/ranger pawns, though. A good set of inclinations and a bow will keep your enemies feathered and dead.

I think I like the sound of Strider/Ranger. It would seem like I would have to babysit a Mage. Do people rent Strider pawns often? I might just do it for the RP.

I don't know how often they're used - I've never kept a pawn as a strider for long. They have Ensnare, which is a universally well-regarded ability. If you're an assassin you can trade short bows back and forth as you please, which is nice if you want to Dragonforge a bow for your pawn.

Mages/Sorcerers don't really have to be looked after so long as you're doing your job as tank (or someone in your party is, at any rate). With the right tendencies spellcaster pawns really shine.

I usually equip at least Comestion or some fire spells to make the harpies and dogs less annoying, if it weren't for all those mobs I'd free up more slots to toy with.

lol goblins then chimera+dire wolves+snow harpies, well that escalated quickly.gif.
Wish they mix up the mobs so these kind of scenarios happens more often.

Man I'm loving my sorcerer pawn, I'm definitely keeping her inclinations, it's been working really well and she seems to be casting the better spells at the right time instead of spamming it. Or it could be a fluke.

Sorry, forgot to reply to this, but yeah, you were totally on the mark here. Good call! I swear I had done this even on my first playthrough, but it appears not. Guessing I just thought the
regular golem that pops up when you get to Selene's house
was the quest itself. Or something. Not entirely sure now, heh.

So, I got everything done this morning. 1000 / 1000'd, NG+ done on hard, yadda yadda. Never felt even a little bit burnt out, despite exceeding 100 hours in playtime. Which, for me, is really quite surprising. The expansion could drop tomorrow and I would happily lose myself for another week. What a game, man. Really happy with Dragon's Dogma.

You should try doing a run of Speedrun Mode now. I'm planning on doing that here soon, but first I'm going to do another NG+ run just to set everything up for the fastest possible run. Need to throw down a couple more Portcrystals in key places, make a forgery of the Wyrmking Ring so I can skip that quest, etc. If you have everything set up properly, you can finish the game in under an hour.

Anyway though, I'm glad my advice helped! :D

and combat is good.

That's one thing Capcom has typically excelled at compared to most other developers. They've almost always had generally great combat/fighting mechanics in most of their games. The combat in this game is like the complete, polar opposite of the combat in a game like Skyrim; that is to say, it doesn't induce a narcoleptic attack. Although I'm not sure I could ever make it as a Warrior in this game. It feels way too much like lugging around the Dragonbone Crusher from Demon's Souls.

Yeah. I don't have too many major complaints with the game anymore, but this is one. DD's combat speed is simply too fast for a class with such slow moves. Jumping light attack basically becomes your bread and butter, because it's pretty much your only attack that comes out right after you hit a button. It's rough. Enemies never really stand still for long either, making it even worse. Like, yo wolf, I just want to smack you, be cool about this, dude.

My Strider pawn is awesome. I'm a fighter and I die more than she does. You guys should rent her out sometimes. My PSN name is the same as my username. Still only at the Encampment though, doing all these quests because I heard they end once I go to the capital.

I'm so glad I didn't make a Mage pawn though. There are so many of them in the Rift its not even funny. Just sucks my Phaia wont get picked up often though. Why do everyone make their mages lolis?

Trying to get perfect screenshots is tough in hard mode. You have to focus on the combat so much that you forget to take screenshots in the first place - something badass happens and you're cursing yourself for missing it.

Dragon Bone Smasher is fast and agile if used correctly. Just started a warrior in DD and it's really slow in comparison. Feels good though.

The only thing i'd add in Dragon's Dogma's combat is the option to make the camera rotate more faster.

I'd fix that crappy controls for climbing, I never liked fighting those dragons because they were hard to climb, maybe they could improve it so that you could walk/enemy step on them, it would make it a lot better, I remember they mentioned that they wanted to let you step on enemies or something but never get to make it work.

I like the combat but they should improve some of the classes, hybrid classes are by far the best classes in the game, giving the basic class some unique skills would be nice, warrior should also have 6 skill slots, since right now, no one will ever use the defensive/team based skills.

I haven't found any use for some of the skills either, like Reset and dash for strider...

And they should make it easier to equip arrows, I never tried ranger because I didn't want to bring up the menu to access some of the arrows you can craft, maybe make L1 a modifier for the dpad to change weapons/arrows.

There are really a lot of things in the game that the players will never get to explore, or that they are too half baked, hopefully they spend some of their budget on gameplay and expand it a bit for the sequel, just cut down the cost on voice acting... if they're making it for next gen, they could easily make the combat a lot faster than what they have now with better performance.
