Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Wow, dick move, game. I took an escort quest and wasn't paying attention to who I was escorting but he died at some point. No big deal, I finish another quest on the same route. Get back to Gran Soren, turns out it was the innkeeper. So now I can't rest or manage my skills or inventory in Gran Soren. Whoever said characters return in 7 days better be right.

Damn, that sucks!

Could you post whether or not that quest expires once you continue the story? I've read that the purse is a rare drop from saurians but I'm not going to hang around to farm it.

I definitely didn't find it off a Saurian. I think it's most likely random, as I just saw someone on Gamefaqs say they found it in the Catacombs. Kinda sucks because it could drop really early or really late in the game.

How many different types of armor models for each armor slot are there (Ie, 15 different cloak models, 17 different breastplate.)? Or are there any bulky/heavy shoulderplate type armor sets

I was disappointed with Diablo 3 and its lack of armor models -- and Diablo 3 is about that. It only has around 16 different models per armor slot (16 different shoulders, 16 different breastplates, etc.), but it looks different on each character class -- but that doesn't really matter since the fun part is picking up new, unique and exciting armor items.. The developers didn't want the mismatched 'setup' of armor? What? But that means everybody will wear the same, and it'll feel less awesome.

Yo GAF,
sorry to interrup but i need your oppinion 'cause i'm still om the fence.

To make it easy for my drunken mind: I love MonHun (yes, even single player) and liked the demo.

Will i enjoy the game? Ask me stuff if needed.

Honestly I wouldn't buy this game full price. I think you would enjoy it though, it's just some of the quests are too vague, and quests will randomly cancel because of progress. I don't know why quests would cancel in the first place, seems pointless.

I was certain at first you'd be able to craft it considering you can find snakeskin as a material :/ Having it as a random drop is bad unless the quest doesn't expire. I was hoping that none of the billboard quests expired.

I honestly don't find it too much like Monster Hunter. There will be times though when you are just walking in the wilderness and then a Monster Hunter type battle will come out of nowhere, which have been my favorite parts of the game so far. If you like open-world games as well, then you will enjoy this game.

Hmmm...when i read your comment it sounded kind of negativ in my head.
then i re-read it and realized that it maybe is pretty down my vein.
How much is this game open world-ness +big battles? (equip-a-thon? Please?)

The screenshot option insists on Facebook so I just had to take a phone pic.

Only when I had bought the glasses from the rift shop I realized that I was Hermione from HP (mage/sorcerer 24). Big man in the middle is the main pawn. I just love how varied and realistic people you can make with this game.

I honestly don't get why quests expire at all. The only time I can see a quest expiring being viable is if:

A. The quest giver dies.
B. A major change happens in the world that makes it impossible to complete the quest (i.e. an area becoming no longer accessible).

That's about it. With an open world game everyone is going to play it differently and do quests in a different order. With no warnings as to when a quest will just up and be marked as "Failed" on you it's fairly annoying trying to move forward at times as you're constantly worried about getting some obscure quest done which may or may not lead to some rare items for your character.

damn now I want to make a Harry Potter party. It's not like anyone is going to make a good Harry Potter game anyway, might as well be this one. Gran Soren = Hogwarts.

The first time I found it, was off some goblins or some undead...I think, and it was by accident. A pawn picked it up, so i'm not sure if it was just laying around or what. The quest says something about riverside...

It's something that's always bugged me about JRPGs and it's a bit of drag that it happens in this game as well. I still want to know whether billboard quests expire or not. Stuff like "Kill 20 boars" has no reason at all to expire.

Finally found a new longbow. Was better than my other bow even without any enhancements. Pretty happy about this considering how long I've used that other bow.

I also had six people at once using my main pawn. I was pretty happy about that, too. 20 minutes later I go back to the inn, sleep and my pawn returned from yet another world. Only this time that guy rated my pawn two stars in every category. Not just one star, but two. So I figured he's not just trolling but really means it. What an ass. lol

I can confirm that the thief Maul who has a fortress in the Southwest respawns.

I even killed him myself. Then I came back much later and he was alive. He didn't even go hostile or anything and I did a quest for him.

Also went to Soulflayer Canyon looking for that stupid purse. No luck. Killed a cockatrice at least. Man what a dick.

I think you'll like it. There are Monster Hunter-esque elements to it (novel monster attack patterns, preparing for journey feels like preparing for a hunt, gathering resources feels so MH), but it's hard to describe the game as a whole since it draws inspiration from so many things. As someone who loves MH and played DD's demo quests dozens of times before eventually getting bored, I'm enjoying myself with this, but I really don't think there's a correlation between liking both. I think whether or not you enjoy Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is more important to liking Dragon's Dogma.

Oooh, I was wondering what happened if he died on that quest. It's kind of like how Demon's Souls/Dark Souls screw your over for fighting with important NPCs. I hope he respawns. :(

edit: I'm so late with my pointless commentary haha

No more snow harpies
It's fun to make fried chicken out of them with a sorc. Or flied chicken, in the case of Maelstrom. Is it just me, or does their breath attack always freeze you when you're wet? If that's not just a weird coincidence, that's so cool.

Yeah. If they could get away from that whole quest expiring thing it'd be fine to be obscure as I wouldn't have to worry about some random "You've failed at life!" message popping up on my screen when I start some other quest.

My pawn's been used like 10 or 11 times so far today by my count, though no amazing items so far. He's only been rated twice too, which is unfortunate, but still all 4's and 5's.

I just sat him down in the wisdom chair and he asked what targets he should attack first - told him to go for mages and archers which has been of great benefit to me in fights. He just charges at them now and wails on them with his hammer. In the event that they run away he chases them around the battlefield lol.

Well, i don't really care about the price. But can you explain that random cancel stuff to me?
i say yes to a quest, it gets cancelled because it hit this and that point of exploration?

Is there an option with the Knowledge Chair to get your pawn to pick up items more often? I like my character to stay as light as possible so would rather they handled all that.

You can make them pick up stuff more often by going to the Rift Store and buying a potion for it. I think multiples make the inclination stronger, to the point where your pawn will ignore enemies to pick flowers.

edit: At The Encampment near Cassardis. The guy near the rift stone sells you crazy stuff for RC.

There is an option like that. You can either let him prioritize combat or loot. I'm trying to change that one myself, too, but I simply cannot get it again. Really weird why you have to instruct your pawn like that. Really makes me wonder why stuff like that has to be needlessly complicated.

Oh, I don't know that. Cool.

You can stop worrying. I accepted the audience with the Duke and none of my quests were cancelled. The quests the NPC is referring to are ONLY the quests that come from him and involve the Wyrm hunting contract.

Anyone ever see a Griffen swoop down, pick up a Cow, and fly off with the cow?

Just happened, and I lol'd

I don't know where I got it, but I found the sword "Gryphic Victory" and I went to sell it and noticed it sells for 115,000G and I instantly went "WHAT!" and I ran as fast as I could back to town and turned my pawn into a warrior and equipped her with it.

Her Atk went from like 180 to 527.

RIDONKULOUS.

Ok, that's something at least. I'm thinking it's only quests you get directly from NPCs that expire as you progress the story.

Hmmm, color me intruiged! Gonna replay the demo a bit now. I guess i'm more on the positiv side for this game.

Interrest piqued!

So how are you guys planning to level in this game? Are you trying to even out the weaknesses or are you guys min/maxing glass cannons?

I think I settled on the Assassin vocation for my Arisen but wonder if this would be a good route to go with an extremely high DPS.

Starting as Strider. Strider>Fighter>Warrior>Assassin?

For my fighter I'm going fully tank. Fighter >Mage and Sorcerer ( to buff up Magic defense and get magic defense augs) Warrior then return as a Fighter.

I am unhealthily addicted to the physics in this game. I got way too excited for a new robe with long, flowy sleeve flaps. :(

I was just there and got a purse but saw no cockatrice. I don't understand this game.

Wait a tic. Now I'm confused.

Are we talking about the same place? I just watched the youtube video and it's a part of the river near the Cursed Woods where the player finds it.

So, the only enemy I didn't find in the game was a cockatrice
save for that one story quest

Where can I find one?

Soul Flayer Canyon Cave.

It could be because
I haven't done the story quest with one yet. The only time I've seen a cockatrice so far is the 'dead' one soldiers were taking to Gran Soren.

Oh God don't ever use Load Last Checkpoint. My definition of checkpoint and Capcom's must be very different.

These are "last resort" loads. They purposefully bring you back to the inn... which is usually before a pain in the butt quest, or before whatever clearly-too-hard-thing-you-just-tried-to-do-that-got-you-killed. This gives you an opportunity to back out of quests if you're out in the field and realize you're over your head, or just don't want to have to finish.

Save your game yourself. But the checkpoint saves sometimes actually save you from yourself. haha.

Pretty smart system, once you've been playing for awhile.

How do guys recommend I combine items?

I don't understand the system, and I'm afraid to lose some rare materials trying to experiment ;(

Don't. That's what I do.

I experimented a bit during the beginning of the game, but I very rarely had enough/the right materials to make anything really useful. Even with my storage basically overflowing with tons of items I have a hard time making some cool stuff. There just seem to be way too many items with too few recipes.

Ugh, I need help. I'm level 20-something, I've been a Strider/Ranger the entire game. I have the best daggers that the shop sells, upgraded to max, and my daggers still do almost no damage to any enemies unless my weapons are enchanted. This would be fine if my bow was better, but it isn't. Of course, I do decent damage to goblins and wolves without enchantment, but those enemies are designed for players 20 levels below me. Am I doing something wrong? Fighting my last ogre was just a boring slog because I basically have to wait for everyone else to do all the damage.

What are your strength stats? Looking at, at level 20?

It's kind of messed up to find Silk Lingerie in a chest at the
female bandit camp
. It's even more messed up that male characters can't equip it. >:|

Just do it without hesitation. It's fun to try and experiment with combinable materials.
I'm an item hoarder, but this is the best advice.

Am I doing something wrong? Fighting my last ogre was just a boring slog because I basically have to wait for everyone else to do all the damage.
You're not. Some enemies just aren't very susceptible to some types of damage. I've come across a few enemies that render me useless as a magical damage dealer. It's why you should strive for a balanced party with pawns that know what they're doing.

With the right bow skills you can do a lot of damage + knockback + canceling enemy attacks/summons. Just don't expect to destroy half a health bar of a boss with one hit. That's just not how it's supposed to be.
