It seems you can pay via gift certificate, money order and paypal also.

I clicked accept and the page just stays there. It says it takes a minute but seems its taking to long.

do NOT pay with Paypal. You'll have to do it all over again, and log into your webId you create to pay with the payment you sent. trust me, this is what i did b/c i didn't notice the 'credit card' clause.

just use credit/debit and be happy.

$0.77 fee must be paid with a credit card one year in advance. You will be charged $9.24 upon signing up for one year, $104.64 for two years.

I know it allows you to pay with Paypal, just DONT DO IT.

"This may take a minute, please only click once. Charge will appear from DreamHost."

How long did it take for you guys? I'm still waiting.

You probably got one that you -paid-.

I'm serious, you're now going to have to go back and sign up again.

Do everything the same way EXCEPT use the WebID you created and log in with it when it prompts you to. You should have a $9.34 credit in your account.

Dude, I didn't pay with paypal, I payed with a credit card. I logged in to my account with my WebID and I get a "This account is currently pending approval." message.

The email was the "you payed" message, do I still have to do it again?

Sorry then I just read what you said wrong, as long as you got to step 7 you should be fine.

For everyone else: it says you can pay with other methods at checkout...DO NOT DO IT. It's more trouble than it's worth.

I actually got to step 6. I clicked on make payment but the page didn't go to step 7. Like I said, firefox sometimes doesn't redirect. I'm assuming step 7 is just the "you paid for this" page like everywhere else.

my advice is to check your billing/acct area. if there's a 9.43 credit, it's possible that it didn't finish. i'd wait till tomorrow morning, and if it didn't then go through the process i outlined above.

In my billing area it says I payed everything.

But I don't have my domain though, does it take time for them to get it up or what?

Total Amount Due: $0.00
Username/Account: alejob / "alejob's Account"

my address

Make Payments To:

So is it normal that I don't have my domain yet?

In my Home>Account summary I get:

My Crazy Domain Insane (Crazy Domain Insane)
Start Date: 2004-10-12
Charged Through: 2005-10-11 ($119.40/1 year)

Even though I got the $9.30 email. Is that normal? Am I paranoid?

Go into domains->register and see what it says if you try to register whatever domain you want. if it says that you have one left to add, then add it.

I bet the "We're only giving away 777 accounts" thing is just a lie to motivate you to sign up.

It's a pretty tempting deal all the same.....

Okay, so regged my WebID, and when it gets to screen 5 (verify total), it says my total will be $190. After checking that i have the right plan, i enter my WebID again, enter the coupon code, and i get this:

Am i doing something wrong, or are they out of the cheap plans?
The cheap plan is only $9 for one year. After that its like $7 a month. Select 12 months if you want the $9 for one year.

Yeah, someone had sent me the link to the Dreamhost order page earlier today, which i don't think had the link to the cheap hosting plan. Anyways, i just signed up, and got an email verifying receipt of payment within ten seconds of clicking the pay button.

Now if i could just find some way to kill my Hostradius account. i called two times and left two messages, and still no response.

Edit: Got my confirmation email four minutes later! Thanks shoplifter!

Its a one time charge I guess, though you have to put an end date somewhere or they'll charge you again after a year, full price.

I got my activation email, so I'm almost ready, just waiting for my domain.

This is a great deal.

shoplifter is correct, DON'T USE PAYPAL. I had to do it all over with a CC and get them to refund my PayPal (they did)

This is an awesome deal, sign the hell up!

ok, so I signed, up, now how the heck do I use this site?

I thought it would be easy like angelfire.com, but this is actually pretty complicated...

WTF is FTP?

o_O

FTP, file transfer protocol, is a way of transferring files from one computer to another. i'd recommend using a program like Filezilla which is free and works well to transfer via FTP, which is much more efficient at tranferring files versus using an web form. i can drag an entire folder, select files, etc. with Filezilla instead of clicking Open... for every file i want to transfer. Read the email on FTP that you got from Dreamhost for settings.

is there anyway to do this FTP thing without having to download something?

also, is learning this FTP thing going to get me to where I can just give the website some HTML and it displays it.

I want to make the website using Angelfire then just transfer the code and files...

Get an FTP client. FTP's been around for about 25 years now, way longer than "the intarweb." It's classic!

I recommend FlashFXP or CuteFTP. CuteFTP might be good if ... you don't know what FTP is.

I feel bad for somewhat mocking you but FTP is as important as email and the web to the existence of things. Basically, when you connect using a graphical FTP client you have your local PC on one side and the remote PC on the other. and you ...

uh, do you know what it means to "upload" a file?

well, in any case, FTP is as easy as copying files from one directory to another on your computer. The only difference is that the directory you're copying to is on someone else's computer. so use it!

I'm kind of aghast ... how the flying fuck do you make a website WITHOUT FTP? Do you use magnets to rearrange the HDD bytes on the remote webhost? Send psychic images to angelfire.com? HOW DO YOU PUT FILES ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT FTP?!? It's like surfing the web without a browser ... I guess you could use a system of email relays to gather information and ... uh ...

Get FTP.

Most free web hosts like Geocities have page builders where you go through a few pages, selecting the title of the page, background, and a graphic or two. There are also those that have code editors, so you could build an entire site without touching an FTP program. Not that i'd recommend that, mind you.

FTP is the way to go, definitely. After you've configured your client, transferring files to and from your FTP server is just as easy as moving files from one drive on your computer to another. Plus, by designing your site on your hard drive then uploading it, you don't have to worry if you host closes your account (not uncommon with free hosts), or if your browser crashes while updating your site. You'll always have the backup on your hard drive.

Really? Huh, I had no idea. I made my first webpage in late 1994, back when the only thing to view it with was NCSA Mosaic or the up-and-coming Netscape 0.9 ... in fact, I remember that I got Netscape at a computer show on a floppy cause there wasn't any sort of real mass public distribution system yet ... I coded it in notepad because there was no such THING as an HTML editor ... boy, do I feel old.

In any case, yes, you should be writing locally, posting globally. Anything less would be uncivilized.

I still don't have my domain, in the support pages it says it could take up to 24 hours. So I'll wait until tonight.

If I download Apache for windows to make my php pages on my PC, I shouldn't have trouble when I upload them to the server right? I've never used Apache, PHP or Mysql. I guess I'll start reading.

I just use Windows Explorer. Easy as hell just to drag and drop from one window to another.

which FTP client is free and good? I was trying to use the one that comes with the OpenSSH client, but it rejected me. And iirc, i hated CuteFTP.

btw, alejob, my domain registration went through already.

Smart FTP is free & good.
Flash FXP is super hot, but it's shareware.

I hope this deal is still up when I get paid...

I used WS_FTP LE before. which I guess is WS_FTP home now. The trial never expired on me for some reason. I need to get a new client also. I don't like CuteFTP.

I really like WS_FTP.

The deal is over. It was still on this mornig but not any more.

1. I like SmartFTP (especially for hidden file support) but it's hard to break my old habit of using LeechFTP, which is actually pretty damned useful.

2. Jackfrost: aoi isn't kidding - most of the freepage stuff (and some of the pay) is like Blogger, where they keep the nuts and bolts as far away as possible. Our days of HTML1 and notepad are just tales for the storybook, now.

3. By everything I can tell, their domain registration system rocks. Delays occur with just about any registrar, but at least with Dreamhost you get 1 free permanently, and can buy others at $15/year (exactly what I was paying elsewhere).

4. Damn, maybe I should have got in on the referral begging action.

5. alejob, I'm guessing you wouldn't have a problem, but if you've never dealt with mysql or php before, maybe you want to look at, say, Movable Type (which uses mysql and now supports dynamic PHP content). This guy walks you through the MT install process on Dreamhost in case the documentation isn't clear enough for you.

do you really have to fax that form you get in the email to them?

I'm using Core FTP. Anyone have experience with this? I figured i would use it since it had the best user feedback on download.com, plus it's free :p

Still no domain for me.

About the subdomains, it says that I can have up to 15 subdomains.

That meas that I can have 15 "independant" websites right? Lets say I registered www.alejob.com

That means I can have a page called gaffers.alejob.com or jokes.alejob.com, etc. And I still can have a www.alejob.com

My question is would I have to manage each subdomain independantly? Or can I manage all of them and access each others stuff from each subdomain.

What form are you talking about? I received 6 emails from them and none of them mentioned any faxing.

Anywho...I'll probably use my webspace to share music and whatnot.
