[Dring] Newzoo 2025 Growth Report: Consoles 2.5%, Mobile 4.5%, PC 3.1%; Console: 645m gamers, PC: 936m gamers

My kids grew up playing Nintendo Switch. Now they almost exclusively play Roblox or Minecraft. Same with pretty much all their friends/classmates/relatives. It's all Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite.

These are the games that everyone talks about at school. And when they're not playing, they're watching streamers/tutorial videos about those games.

I'm not the least bit surprised to see mobile and PC getting most of the growth

Yep, same with my kids, plus some free 2 play stuff like Genshin and such.

It's lack of attention span and it's only getting worse.

Best way forward is what Xbox is doing. An entire ecosystem spanning various form factors:

PCs (including Laptops and Handhelds)
Consoles
Cloud
Mobile

They're still trying to get the Xbox Mobile store released but the cases against Apple and Google are still going through appeals.

Sony needs that PC store going, and expand Cloud to everywhere.

When I used to teach in middle school about 7 years ago, those were the only games the students talked about. So it sounds like nothing much has changed.

Minecraft and Lego Fortnite for my 7 year old. Thank god the school year has started back up and we're back to weekends only. She's started narrating her own gameplay like the youtube creators she's seen lol.

This is honestly sad. But I really do wonder if any of those kids would be gamers like us if they were born in the year 2000. Or is the total pie just getting bigger?

Hmm… I would assume they would play normal games back in 32-bit era since social media didn't exist, these F2P games didn't exist, TikTok/YouTube shorts didn't exist and attention span was a lot more normal.

I mean I doubt my daughter would play many games as she isn't into it that much now (high school), but my son would probably play some stuff.

Personally I think we will see the market contract as Millenials and GenX age out from gaming.

I hope you're wrong. Seriously. It boggles my mind that many kids may be limiting their possible fun because those games can't be played with your friends. Every single piece of content can be consumed by yourself...

- Books
- Movies
- TV Shows
- Music

Yet it's slightly possible Video Games will need to have some type of lobby or multiplayer component in it for the kids to play it. That's just downright HORRIBLE!

Wasn't there a report recently saying Europe had a big increase in console gamers vs pc players? Same for Japan.

Is this one WW? Just UK?

I think it was just Famitsu and lots of people were calling BS on that cause it didn't align with the supposed and reported growth of PC in Japan over the decade.

eh good news for everyone.

fuck mobile though

But i can say that majority of the gamers still prefer f2p games sadly , fakeass gamers.

These numbers indicate a healthy industry. It's actually good news all the way around and I'm surprised that console/PC are so closely competing here.

If I was to draw any conclusion from this it would simply be that these consoles are way too healthy atm to be facing any issues in a near future. The market is even healthier than we assumed.

Doomers(who may not have posted yet) must be looking at different numbers or more likely have some frail preconceived notions..and they were never going to come out of any numbers discussion without some ill reasoned confirmation bias.

Nothing happened. It's fine. News at 11. I know it isn't exciting, but accept it.

This is why Sony is launching games on other platforms. They have no choice or they will get swallowed up. As for Nintendo will see how Switch 2 does in the long run coming from a successful predecessor the amount of early adopters doesn't surprise me.

You're talking about the report made with real data from the Japanese gaming industry companies, made every year by ASCII and that gets published in Famitsu. Such report said that the PC gaming userbase in Japan decreased a bit for the last 10 years, but the PC game revenue in Japan instead became several times bigger during that period.

The report mentioned in the OP is for the worldwide market and only covers 1 year change, but also specifies the change per world region (not at a country specific level).

Regarding EU in 2024, the number of PC players slightly decreased vs the previous year while the console ones increased, but regarding revenue the increase on PC is almost 3x bigger:
  • PC active players 2023: 46% of 124.4M = 57.22M players
  • PC active players 2024: 43% of 128.3M = 55.17M players (-3.58% YoY)
  • Console active players 2023: 56% of 124.4M = 69.67M players
  • Console active players 2024: 59% of 128.3M = 75.70M players (+7.97% YoY)
  • PC revenue 2023: 14% of 25.7B = 3.60B€
  • PC revenue 2024: 15% of 26.8B = 4.02B€ (+11.67% YoY)
  • Console Revenue 2023: 41% of 25.7B = 10.54B€
  • Console Revenue 2024: 38% of 26.8B = 10.18B€ (-3.42% YoY)

At least with Roblox and Minecraft, I don't have any problem with it.

They will geek out and learn all sorts of tips and tricks from others, etc. They'll spend hours building the perfect base in 99 Nights in the Forest (their current favorite Roblox game) or building a city in Minecraft creative mode. Any time they make a new friend at the playground or some gathering, they'll exchange usernames and be playing online together later that day.

Now if they get into some predatory gacha shit, that would be a different story
