I know most of the thread's been devoted to talk about the server issues, and I do agree that it absolutely sucks that they're down, but I am just using that time to work on the Tour stuff and having a great time doing so. Server issues at the launch of a game are something I've just come to expect in this day and age. It doesn't mean I'm OK with it,, and I think it's a frequent enough problem that developers should devote more resources to load-testing their shit, but at the same time it's not that big a deal for games that offer up a lot of offline stuff to do in the meantime, which this one does (unlike the PC Diablo III launch).
The game itself is a little above average for me, but not the greatest racer I have ever played so far by any stretch. I don't want to say that I'm disappointed, but I was hoping for a little bit more than what I've experienced so far.
I like the handling - while not super realistic, they nailed a few things really well like lift-off oversteer and weight transfer, which force the player to take a more realistic approach to braking than something like PGR4 where you could be a little more heavy-handed. As a whole the game does feel very similar in handling to the PGR physics model, which is a good and refreshing thing since it's been so long since that game came out, and no arcade racer has even come close for me.
I love the visuals.... most of the time. My problem here is that it's not consistent. India in particular has a lot of areas that look almost last-gen, and the lighting during the middle of the day looks pretty terrible at times. GT6 has a very good mid-day look, with subtle bits of bloom and great HDR effect - I was hoping this would be similarly impressive. In the morning, evening, and night, though - WOW does this game look amazing. The cloud simulation is fantastic too, and there have been a few moments where it was almost too real looking to be true. My other real complaint is that everything looks better when not using the cockpit view - I feel like the details and shine on the car models looks very different form the behind-the-car cams.... which sucks because that's my least favorite way to play a racing game. I'm doing it here on occasion though because the game looks amazing like this, and because it's still very playable. Lighting in the cockpit itself, especially when driving under lights in the tunnels - so good. Framerate could be better, and oh are there ever jaggies at times. In short, it's a very mixed bag of impressive and ho-hum, and that drags it down for me sometimes.
I wish there was more variety in the races - some of the PGR things like cone-runs and overtake challenges were a blast - so far this has just been about either racing or time trials. And while those are both lots of fun, I would like some level of variety to shake things up. I remember an old E3 or gamescom video that included a slalom or gate run, so maybe I just need to play more (I played up to driver level 7 yesterday - almost done with the first page of tour stuff). Also - some American or Japanese cars would have been a great inclusion. What's here is pretty stellar, and a lot of my modern supercar favorites are represented, but they could have given us so much more! Also, all of the environments are based around hilly and winding mountainous roads. Would have appreciated at least one city to zoom around - something with a lot of right-angle turns or chunks of expressway coursing through it. Again - a little more variety than what's here both aesthetically and to spice up the types of driving techniques needed.
Overall it's a good game, and I think a lot of my concerns can be addressed with DLC - car packs and even new environments are things I would actually pay for in the game, especially if each environment had the dozen or so tracks that the base ones have. I don't know if they built the game with content expansion in mind, but it's a game that would certainly benefit from it. I'm also interested in seeing what the social features of the game bring to the table, and if they flesh out what's already here.
