Driveclub PS Plus Edition Delayed by Server Issues

And according to their twitter, the reason why the servers are to capacity is because of the amount of challenges and face-offs and other social features of Driveclub.

It sounds like a network engineering flub, where the intra-network traffic impacts capacity, even with a smaller number of entities than planned. Which I can't imagine the pain of getting a hotfix out for.

I can understand them holding the game back to not kill their servers even more (although it sucks that they're having these issues at all), but I can't help but feel that leaving the paid version and the paid PS+ upgrade up is a bit disingenuous. To all the people who don't follow this stuff as closely as we do this looks as though the two paid options are the only options. They're not told that there is supposed to be a "free" PS+ version, and they're not prevented from buying one of the paid versions because of the server issues. There's no indication anywhere on the Store that anything out of the ordinary is going on or that a certain version is missing. All the PS Store versions should be held back until this is sorted. Or all of them should be up, with the online functionality temporarily disabled. What they're doing now is a bit BS.

All versions of the game should be available or none of them should. If they're really having such massive server issues that they can't allow more players access because it would negatively impact the experience of those who have already purchased the game, they shouldn't continue selling the game either.

I agree with both of these comments.

Or... just shut the servers off until this is sorted? That should force everyone's game into offline mode, and it should be fine as the game is made to work that way as well (even if it's not how it's meant to be played).

Thats exactly what I believe to be the most reasonable act. Just delay the free version for such is not right and uninformed people will buy it before try out. Also, it is a disrespect for their consumers by nature since it was promised already by a long time for this months IGC.
Penalize those who were expecting the free version is bs, honestly.

When has a developer ever taken down a game due to day 1 server issues?

Answer: never

Last year Square Enix halted sales of Final Fantasy XIV because of server issues. And I think I read a few weeks ago that some game on 3DS had to stop sales for similar reasons. I could be wrong on that last one though.

People believe they are holding back the plus edition to get people to pay full price for the retail game?
Yes, they would suspend all sales otherwise.

I don't doubt they have issues, but this is a case of taking advantage in a bad situation

An understandable decision, but no less shit for those waiting to play it. It also doesn't bode well for future releases if the network couldn't cope with this. That's my biggest concern, as others have said this is a paid subscription service, so it should be more stable than the old days.

I'm still happy I purchased a ps4 over the Xbox, but that happiness is slowly turning into frustration with the slow updates/lack of features and feebleness of the network.

But it's not a psn issue is it? Drive Club servers does not mean PSN. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

My cousin bought DC last night. He didn't know there was gonna be a PS+ edition. If they had released the ps+ edition he probably would not have bought the game

I've requested an ETA, although no guarantee the folks I work with can give me an answer back.

I believe the exact words in my email were "forums meltdown over the delay" or something like that.

I really appreciate you working so hard to get us answers, dude. Hope we get something.

I am a bit bummed that I have to wait for the ps+ version of DC but then on the other hand I feel super bad for the people that paid full retail for this game and can't even play online that sucks and I'm sure most of us have been there with at least one game at one point. I don't really mind having to wait cuzz shit happens and I know I will get the ps+ version of DC eventually. But hey that's just me

Nice to see someone else with a calm mind. I paid for the game and had it at midnight launch day, I'm sad I haven't been able to play online but working in IT I understand that sometimes shit goes wrong. Not gonna take it out on the devs though, I am sure they're doing everything they can to get things up and running.

I look at delays like this the same way I look at waiting for a package to be delivered.

It sucks that I don't have the thing right now, but I'll spend FAR more time with the thing when it arrives, than I will waiting for the thing. It sucks that Halo isn't out right at this minute, but the few weeks I have left will only be a drop in the bucket for the years I'm going to have the game after it's out. So spend those hours in between with something else and stop stressing over it.

That's how I see it too. Without a doubt they know people are anxious for the game and are working non stop to get it out.

not surprised. PSN has been garbage for a month now, just imagine all those ps plus members downloading one game on a shitty network. sony hq would explode.

The first thing they need to do is stop calling these PS+ games free because they are not. We are all paying for them, some of us just buy it through the PS+ subsidy while others at retail, etc..

In the least why not at least let us download it?

A little off topic but has Sony announced anything about keeping game servers online longer this gen (paid multiplayer and everything)? I think most 360 games are still available to play online (not ea games), and I know that some ps3 games aren't like GT5 and Resistance.

I'm UK gaf so wasn't expecting it until the 10th anyway, but assuming they miss that, and it could be much longer, I am pretty disappointed with this news.

The game was delayed close to a year as it was, which was fine. But it's out now, and I still can't have what was promised to me so long ago, because of janky launch servers, which seems a bit lame.

Its amazing that the destiny launch was nearly flawless on ps4 but drive club of all things struggles to maintain service.

The game can't be that popular can it?

It's always communicating with the servers and setting challenges from friends and clubs (when it works!) so I figure it's not so much the people on it, but the six degrees of Kevin Bacon connections between everybody playing. Also, the sheer number of people beating inter-player challenges will be high because we're all beginners at the game and records will be broken non-stop.

Destiny hasn't been flawless though. I have had many problems with disconnects and lag spikes. Going back to the launch of Minecraft PSN has had problems with connectivity and anything that needs to be pulled from the servers, especially the friends list.

from what I remember most 360 games were Peer2peer. One example is Gears3, it started with dedicated servers but MS quietly shut them off and the game reverted to a peer2peer experience. there were many more PS3 games that had dedicated servers last gen, I remember this because I was ticked off at MS for taking subscription money and not providing dedicated servers for it's games.

Na, im thinking its a combination of things, including people already playing Destiny.

They should have released the PS+ games on the 2nd, Drive Club on the 7, might have helped to be honest.

Also, they should have let us pre-load Drive Club PS+ edition and just let us decrypt the files locally on release, completely dumb that they make everyone download the game at the same time.

I just want to know how many people bought this game for the amount to crush the servers. Maybe it sold some ridiculous amount.

I think it would behoove you to communicate that many of the meltdowns weren't about the actual delay, but the absolute silence from anyone at Sony concerning the situation once it became apparent. We went a good twelve hours before anyone official decided to say anything. You'd think Sony as a whole would know better considering the outrage over the silence after the PSN security breech.

You mean the same month that destiny launched and went smoothly?

lol.

psn was being shit before destiny launched, but it got much worse when destiny launched.

every day at peak times you cannot to see your friend lists, add people, use teh store and send messages. It is completely unacceptable,

what exactly went smoothly? destiny might rune fine online but the psn has gone garbage, sony maybe aware of this and thought maybe it would overload their shite network.

This game has been a disaster from start to finish. How about you shell out for more and better servers. I can't imagine the load has even been that big, with people still waiting to try it out for free, first.

Your post is factually incorrect. The servers are Evolution's servers, not Sony's. Sony's servers were fine and I was able to download my PS+ games with no issue last night. You have no clue how networking software or data centers work either apparently.

This is worth mentioning, Destiny hasn't gone off that well either, it's not clear if the problems they were having were related to Bungie or PSN (I suspect Bungie) but considering how little I played Destiny (~15 hours) I can recall quite a few times when the servers when down, having me lose progress or simply not being able to log in at all.
I agree with the Minecraft statement, it seems Minecraft is the root of all evil.

This..
It's not about the delay for most reasonable folks.

It's just the deafening silence.

Sad, that they are willing to distribute digital copies for money, but want to not release the PS+ version which they promised more then a year ago.

I had ordered it on disc despite the PS+ version, but I probably will return the disc unless the G27 works on it, which at this point is unlikely :(

GT7 where art thou..

Just go return the disc.. because ZERO chance it'll work. Also, as far as GT7? Still gonna need a new wheel.

Funny, I'm on every day around peak times and I've experienced none of what you are claiming. Sounds more like hyperbole, or maybe you just have your own network issues.

The entitlement in this thread is embarrassing.

I am disappointed as I was looking forward to checking out PS+ DC yesterday, but to take it as far as some of the people here and bash Sony for PSN and PS+ is a bit over the top.

Having online issues in the first couple days is unfortunately the world we live in now and no game or company is immune (With Destiny being an anomaly)

Now if you want to bitch about Sony's communication in regards to the whole thing then I am all for that. There is no reason why a blog post couldn't have surfaced yesterday after the PSN store was updated and PS+ DC wasn't there. Leaving us in the dark is more inexcusable then not having it available for download.

People that paid full price for the full game deserve this decision as they need to get the game they purchased up and running. Us PS+ free loaders should not be a higher priority.

Let's hope it gets resolved in the next few days.

I just find it hysterical that GAF is freaking out about not receiving a free game quickly enough.

Entitlement, y'all.

They really botched this launch. The free version being day and date was a major marketing boon that they've been promoting for over a year and the social aspects were the defining feature of the game.

It's not free, you are paying for a service that provides it.

I'll never understand this sentiment.
