Drivers in Florida

I think Oregon must be the opposite of Florida.

Imagine a state where people usually go 25 mph under the speed limit on the interstate, fight over the slow lane, and struggle to pass anyone thus blocking all traffic from going a decent speed. If one of their drivers get stuck in the left lane on I-5 they generally do not speed up to look for an opening and instead block all traffic in the left lane by going super slow.

It's a mind fuck. Oregon is awful to drive in. You think your state has a bad track record with turn signals? Just cross into Oregon and you'll reconsider.

I would rather drive in LA at rush hour than anywhere in Oregon at any time of day.

Try driving up hwy 101 on a day with light rain. Once you cross into Oregon it suddenly looks like a post apocalyptic world with overturned cars every few miles.

Oh, a Californian talking about bad driving. That's rich considering the slow people you encounter are generally rich retired people.... from California. Here's an idea: stop sitting in the goddamn fast lane while going the same speed as people in the slow lane and refusing to let anyone pass.

There's also this thing called letting people merge. Ever heard of it? Of course not, since they obviously don't teach proper driving etiquette there.

Drive on International during Megacon was some of the worst driving I've experienced. I wanted to get out, set the car on fire and walk the rest of the way. Hell I wouldn't want to be caught over there on a regular day near 4pm.
Or 5pm. Or 6pm. OR 7. OR 8. OR 9

Haha I never had a problem. I literally go every weekend to International and yes... Mega Con..

Well, it's a state full of old people and college students/tourists. So yeah. But people in the south in general drive like fucking morons. Texas is a nightmare where people in massive trucks tailgate you at 80+ mph as if they're living out their NASCAR fantasies. You can drive quickly without being a stupid dick and putting lives at risk, but I guess people haven't figured that out yet.

In my anecdotal evidence I've found people in trucks and BMW drivers are the worst.

Another native, I'm used to it. Always assume the driver in front or next to you is about to do something stupid, they usually do.

So true. And not only those in front, but those a few cars in front, and those to the side.

I think it is key to how I've avoided accidents in my time driving/living in Orlando and Dallas - with additional extensive driving in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin.

1). Fuckers won't even let you in when you are doing over the speed limit. It's a game, I've been pushed off the road trying to merge. And they smile at you as they creep by not letting you in during rush hour.

2) smart people don't gun it immediately on green like it's a drag race. How many people do you see running a red light a day and you going too roll the dice on that? A couple seconds isn't going to hurt anyone.
I'm not saying to gun it, I'm saying pay attention to the light.

When it comes to merging, you're supposed to match your car to a empty hole. You can't merge if a car is next you. Vary your speed. Simple.

That's how it should be, but it really is not as simple as you're suggesting in many areas. You're from Florida, right? If you've driven on 95 you'll know that lots of those merging ramps are short as fuck. Like preposterously short. And if you hit a pocket of heavy traffic or a convoy of asshole truckers who refuse to move over and let the merging cars in, then you either have to stop, slow down considerably, or be run off the road.

I bet if we took a poll in here of people who have used 95 extensively, just about all of them would have a story about how they were run off the road on a merging ramp. In my case, my ramp from hell is the Port Orange ramp merging to 95 north.

Turning on headlights solves the visibility problem without the ambiguity that hazards cause because the turn signals no longer work to let people know about a lane change or something.

People with hazards on in that situation tells me they don't have a clue what they're doing and I need to get away from them as soon as I can.
In crazy hard Florida rain, it's sometimes basically impossible to see normal tail lights on the highway.

Regarding 2), I've seen people run redlights multiple times AFTER IT'S GREEN on perpendicular side. I was nearly t-boned straight in the driver side door in Atlanta by the same thing, so despite the short redlight timers I've become very leery of jumping out before I make sure the side lanes have stopped.

I would love to see some of you driving here (Brazil, Curitiba). I'm used to it so I don't think it's that bad, but relatives say it's one of the worst places to drive in the country.

From what I have seen of Paraguay, that's even worse.

In here, some weird shit happens from time to time. Some of it is in regards to traffic:

Use turn signals.

Some lights are quick so pay attention; Sorry for honking but old people linger enough for six cars to go through the light and jam up traffic. There's a green left on a main road here that's about enough time for two to six cars depending how much everyone is paying attention.

Keep right except to pass.
Slower traffic keep right.
Cops even agree just let someone speed by you, it's more dangerous to let cars pile up behind you even if you are doing the speed limit. Stay out of the left lane please.

Yes, drivers here are horrible.

Pretty much.

Liberal honking is great and people taking left lane for no reason is the worst. Just let me pass you at 90 Kay?

Come to Lima, Peru and try driving here.

You will never complain about drivers ever again after you experience a privatized transport system.

Florida was paradise compared to here.

If you think Florida is bad you're in for a culture shock when you travel abroad.

Texas on the other hand...

What about Texas?

Because as bad as Texas drivers can be, Florida drivers are on another level entirely. In fact, in no other state I've been to has the quality of the driving especially stood out to me. It's ridiculously bad in Florida - enough so that it is the only time in my life that the pool of drivers I've driven with has managed to sour my impression of a region at all.

And I'm Colombian. This "it's worse in other countries" excuse does nothing for me. :P

Bitching about drivers from different states aside, Let's all just agree that people sitting in the fast lane going 50mph holding up traffic are awful human beings. Let go of your ego, learn to control your damn car over 40mph and GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY.

I full expect when the environment starts dying and humanity begins to die out that Florida will be the first to go Mad Max on us.

I think every fucking state thinks they have the worst drivers. I'm in Texas and whenever I mention I'm from Houston I dread the millionth time they need to try to small talk with "Houston? How bout that houston traffic? Amirite"

Texas is fucking crazy, but I've not spent much time driving there so could just be that. But it was a literal shitshow. I think in 3 hours I saw 2 vans and a sedan fly from right lane to left forcing the left lane to use the median to avoid collision.

Didn't really help that there was a car chase and shit when I was driving past Houston, which is a nightmare in itself to navigate IMO.

I like that people drive fast in FL. Go Sanic!
But I don't find FL driving bad, I might just be one of the idiots driving like an idiot tho but I find FL relaxing for the most part.

I've been to Lima, and I don't remember it being too terrible except for near the airport. Arequipa on the other hand... The shitty little Daewoo taxis people drive all feel like they're about to fall apart any second, and nobody bothers to wear a seatbelt. Traffic lights are basically just suggestions rather than law.

Weve had a documentary of how bad we are.
You prob stayed close to miraflores.

If you keep driving around the airport(Callao) it becomes a battle for survival. Same for the outer areas of the city where most people live

Also the shitty Daewoo taxis in arequipa are better than the 100s of combis and micros that are in lima which most of the time have straight up holes in them
