DUNE - Official Trailer

Drive-in theaters need to make a comeback.

I've never been to one and always liked the idea. But I've seen pictures people have posted at some recent ones and it looks like such a bad set up. The screen looked so tiny. Maybe the effect is different in person, or some handle it better than others. But it made me think it's not as cool as I thought it would be.

the silver lining to the delay is more time to polish in post production and a better financial return meaning better chance the second part gets made. that being said: FUCK

Disappointing and not understandable.
You want it to bomb?

Blade Runner 2049, as amazing as it was, still managed financially flop under otherwise relatively normal circumstances. Now add covid restrictions & limited screenings.
Tenet is also suffering due to considerably a limited theatrical release.

I don't want studios becoming dissuaded in investing in thoughtful science fiction films like this, which already are few and far between.

Likely a reaction to Tenet's box office results.

I don't understand end of 2021 I'll say that. How long are we going to deal with this lockdown bs for?

I feel you. Wish it wasn't a year long delay, but I'd rather wait if it means the film has a chance.
Remember book one is being split into 2 films. If the first film suffers finically I fear we might not even get a proper conclusion. Maybe the contract with Legendary would not allow that, but still a cause for concern.

At the very least this will give Denis Villeneuve the opportunity to do any reshoots he wanted to do initially, or even have more details ironed out in post.

I haven't been since I was a kid, so nostalgia is probably influencing me, but you're probably right. Not sure how they'd update them to modern standards.

If you have a drive in theater near by, you should definitely try at least once. The experience is all part of it!

Yeh I’d still like to give it a try sometime to see what I think. Looks like the coming months may be the best opportunity to do so.

These full year delays just seem a bit much to me. They should instead figure out a way to supplement lower box office numbers with alternative distribution instead of sitting on a cut for a year.

Due to Covid shutdowns and distance restrictions. This is probably slowing down production a lot. Also hearing about Batman being delayed due to Covid restrictions in UK.

Worst case scenario. If theatres do get shut down and can't reopen.
Movie studios might start creating their own movie theatre establishments and if this happens they might actually have a specific standard that all cinemas need to attain. Nothing more annoying than going to a theatre and the screen is too dark or the sound isn't set up properly.

They do. DCI compliance.

Bad sound could be a blown amp or diaphragm. And a dark screen could be something as simple as a sloppy lamp alignment.

Most management in cinemas don't give a fuck. In the UK we have one company servicing hundreds of independent auditoriums (dcinex). And the size of their on site engineer team? Literally 3-4 people lol. And the guy had to fight to get more help, for ages it was just him driving up and down the country alone.

I see cinemas being wiped out and replaced with pay per view on TV.

Just make those pay per view
Would be great if they did a pay-per-view release in addition to a theatrical release (even if limited.)

I know personally for me, I have to see Dune in IMAX, at least for the first time.
Blade Runner 2049 in IMAX was an incredible experience on first viewing. Especially with that soundtrack whew.

Do they just plan on continuing to delay films forever? Don't movie studios actually need to make money?

Just release simultaneously on streaming and DVD/Blu-ray/4K UHD. Mulan is proof it can work. I feel like it will be time for me to die before I ever get to see No Time to Die, much less Denis Villeneuve's Dune.

After Roger Waters didn’t want his music advertising Facebook (understandable) I thought he may just be keeping it out of other media in general. Perhaps since it’s a cover it’s all good. Or perhaps due to the plot of the movie it is.
Hmmmmm.
