DUNE - Official Trailer

The character gets killed in this film though! When the Atreides Palace gets attacked by the Harkonen and the Emperors Sardukar.
I also think the trailer at 1.35 shows the Sardukars in all black attacking the Atreides just for a second.

Do you mean killed directly? IIRC he was left to die in desert in the book.

The trailer was good, but visually the film lacks something. I think the costumes are too dark and busy to be visually interesting and appealing, and there isn't enough of a "scorching desert heat" atmosphere. That shot with the buildings was nice, but I'm afraid the architecture and mechanical designs in Villeneuve's vision will be creatively limited unlike Jodorovsky's vision. The song Eclipse by Pink Floyd is actually very epic and spectacular, and it's a great idea to use it for a film trailer, but in this case the cover is weak. Funny how they get a good idea and botch it in execution. Paul's character should be more relatable in the sense of showing more emotions and varied interactions with characters, but I guess that's not something I can judge from a trailer alone. A "messiah" or "chosen one" character is unrelatable by nature, so he should at least have a wide range of characterization to get the audience invested in him. If he's stoic and serious all the time he won't make for a memorable hero. I haven't read the novel so I don't know how he is in it.

I still want to watch this in theatres and really hope they'll open in my area by the time the film comes out...

What’s the deal with all these future sci movies with spaceships and shit using knives and swords 😂

Ballistic projectiles with enough kinetic energy to injure are blocked by the personal body shields that are readily available to nobility. Lasguns, upon interaction with personal shields, will create a localised explosion both in the location of the shield, and lasgun with a yield equivalent of a small nuclear weapon.

hand to hand fighting is the typical form of combat, requiring one to strike at their opponent's shield slowly enough to bypass it, then go for the kill.

Gonna listen to the over 20 hour long audiobook of Dune.
Please don’t get the audiobook. Read the actual book. Dune isn’t one of the greatest because of its lore. It’s one of the greatest because of Frank Herbert’s ideas/philosophy and his prose. I can’t imagine appreciating prose through an audiobook.

Plus you will probably need help understanding the world using the glossary from the back of the book.

I'm finding the art department on Lynch's film much more appealing: costumes, props, sets...

What that team put out for Lynch's film was a spectacle for the eyes.

We're also going from Patrick Stewart, Everett Mcgill, Max Von Sydow, Kyle MacLachlan, Jurgen Prochnow and Kenneth McMillan to fucking Aquaman and Wrestler guy from Guardians. Peak 2020.

I hope it's good, but villeneuve is massively overrated.

Villenueve filmed most the movie in real locations, not sets. Interview a year or two ago clarified that. Also, his "versions" look far more novel-accurate than the stuff in Lynch's film. It's weird seeing all these people come out of the woodwork to downplay this because of a movie that missed the mark so badly and wasn't even that well liked.

By complete CUNTS.

I had the audiobook for a while now. Would be a waste of money not to listen to it now. Usually I always read the books, but audible had a nice offer for 3 months so I got me some classics.

Uh-huh, why is this thread full of people trying to re-write history on that film? It was barely even a cult classic, lol. It did not go on to find new life past it's box office failings and critical problems like The Thing or Blade Runner from the same era, it's always been this movie people appreciate for what it attempted to do but almost no one actually thinks it succeeded. This animosity towards a new version made by the guy who gave us Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario is honestly crap, it's almost like that knee-jerk reaction to be against "remakes" (lol at this being a film REMAKING the Lynch film) causes people to sometimes behave in ridiculous ways, the gatekeeping makes no sense here, the types of films that SHOULD be tried again are the ambitious failures, films with good ideas that didn't stick the landing, nevermind ones based on a beloved source material. DUNE the novel is huge, the Lynch film is small even but cult standards and a movie like this is needed to get DUNE's mindshare up among a new generation (heck every generation since the '80s).

Getting real Captain Marvel vibes from this lead. Nonstop resting bitchface. And getting tired of seeing his scrawny ass fighting people way bigger than him in every role. I don't care what his destiny is, dudes little and would lose that fight against brolin.

Also, it does look too bland. The tone is off.

What do you mean re-write history? It's one of my favourite films. It's got a cast from heaven and it's one of the most visually stunning works ever put to film. I adore Dune 1984.

I couldn't give a flying fuck what critics or normies thought of it. The dune universe is near incomprehensible to most people because of how alien it is, and just how creepy and fucked aristrocracy can be. Just as it should be in a universe set 20 thousand years from now where feudal fiefdoms are on a planetary scale.

I was looking forward to this, but I'm taking umbrage because judging from that trailer it looks like a near scene for scene remake of Lynch's, but without any of the flair or charm. The visuals are pretty fucking shit, and that's a massive worry for me. Sorry.

Plus that wobbly dickhead playing Paul is no replacement for Kyle Maclachlan. I fucking cringed when he grunted out 'what's in duhhhh bawwwwks?!?' Jesus wept.

As for your last couple of sentences, I agree, I never thought we'd ever see more Dune, I hope this is amazing and does well so we can get more dune games. (Funcom has license iirc)
But I'm not just gonna shut up and consoom because it's directed by internet fandoms current golden bollocks.

I like Brolin, and I like Javier Bardem, so that's a big plus.

Made a start on the book tonight and it’s already drawing me in pretty quickly. Never read it before so it’ll be a fun ride. Kindle says it’ll take 75 hours so clearly it’s a lot of book. Of course anyone who knows me on here will know how much I love reading - I’m happy to have my head in a good book.

I haven't read the books or seen the original but visually I'm interested and I thought Villeneuve did a good fucking job with Blade Runner.
I'm in. Give me the spice.

When they are fighting are those shields that are flashing?

Do we know how faithful an adaptation this movie is supposed to be? If I read the book won't it kind of spoil the movie? I'm game for reading it but wonder if it'd be wiser to wait until I've seen this.
I'm the same. I'm going to start reading the books because I find the atmosphere so appealing.

No. You also have to read Messiah, Children, and then finally enjoy the best one, God Emperor.

Yep, it's crazy.
The cast of the new movie is like "get every popular actor that exists in 2020".
Doesn't need to be bad, but seeing how quality the old cast was, this doesn't give me hope.

I hope it's good, but villeneuve is massively overrated.
I agree.
I didn't even like BR2049.

Sorry, but that's complete bullshit, and you are either too young to have been around when it was released and later on when it was rediscovered in the early 90ies or have been living under a stone.

If it wasn't that much of a cult classic, Villeneuve would not feel the need to copy it scene by scene in his lame style, would he?

I'm a little older than Lynch's film. They're both based on the same source material so similar looking shots is a given, I wouldn't put it past Villeneuve to also be homaging DUNE. That said it definitely does NOT have the cult status of many other films of its era because anybody who watches it understands where it's deficient, moreso if you read the book but even before I read the book it felt incredibly thin for an epic. It needed to be more than one film or longer... it certainly could have used a bigger budget... the new film has clearly more book accurate spaceships and designs for the different houses looks. Also man, imagine calling Villenueve's style lame... sorry but the trailer looks gorgeous and I expect it to be incredible considering the dude gave us Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario, he has no trouble with style.

And yet the sci fi mini series was able to create its own visual style without copying so much of the Lynch movie.
I have seen so much different art from the Dune universe over the years that looks so completely different to what is seen in the Lynch movie, and still the new movie chose to mimic the old movie almost scene for scene. Just with all the edges being grinded off.

That said it definitely does NOT have the cult status of many other films of its era because anybody who watches it understands where it's deficient,
Yeah, because that argument prevented a movie from becoming a cult movie ever, lol.

The movie is its own thing. I don't want to defend that. I can understand that people who love the books hate the 1984 adaption.
Doesn't take from it being a cult movie classic.

Also man, imagine calling Villenueve's style lame...
I have seen Arrival and BR2049, and didn't like both movies. They are boring greyish looking snorefests in my pov.
Different horses, different courses.
For me, Villeneuve is overrated as fuck.
Your mileage may vary.

Like Nolan, Villeneuve's aesthetic has always been on the cold, subdued side. It's a great fit for a minimalist thriller like Sicario or something slick and noirish like Blade Runner, but Dune... maybe not. Jodorowsky on the other hand, has a red hot aesthetic that stems from his untamed and unlimited imagination. Oh well. Let's hope the script's good.

It looks like all the cookie cutter sci fi shit you see on artstation. Samey, geometric concrete bollocks with dull colour grading. I'm hugely dissapointed. Dune is the universe where you can go mental, you're allowed to explore the different styles that human creatively can think of. But maybe that's just not commercially viable.

The original six Herbert books are on archive.org for freezle-me-deezle... and it's like 10,000 pages of Dune.

You can’t easily reformat a pdf though and they look horrible on a kindle.
It's more of a free option for us cool cheap studs who don't mind PDFs. Just putting it out there for the curious. You can download it in other formats for archive.org, but whatever they are using to convert formats is deranged.

I was just listening to an interview with Frank Herbert. Despite the amalgamation of cultures and beliefs that were written in Dune, he explicitly states that Liet Kynes was supposed to represent "western man." That is, I think that changing Liet Kynes into a black woman defeats Herbert's purpose.

Liet Kynes was the planetary ecologist. He thought as western man does. He collects data to parameterize the equations of planetary and ecological behavior. The thought process of western man is that man uses data to subdue nature.

As Kynes is dying in the desert, he completely understands the technical details of what's happening to him. His manner of death is ironic and poignant. The planet will ultimately kill him despite his accumulation of data and knowledge, because Kynes is still subject to the systems of the planet. Kynes observes the planet. And the planet observes Kynes.

So wearing a force field generator is like wearing an explosive barrel out of Half Life. I'd rather not wear mine then.

No, because in lore no one is crazy enough to fire a lasgun at a shield! The entire area would be wiped out by a powerful explosion similar to a nuke.

Doh! .... to be expected but still stinks :( While I have a huge backlog of movies to watch, I do miss watching new stuff and was really looking forward to this. Just watched the Spicediver remix of 1984 Dune and the Sci-Fi channel 3 part mini series. Was going to be watching the 3 part Children of Dune in about a week ... so torn, part of me says just rip the bandaid off and kill the cinemas and go all VOD. Especially since even once they do open up I wonder if there will still be a lag in attendance as everyone is probably going to have differing levels of risk acceptance. And I would think that the theater experience itself is still strong so even if movies are re-released in theaters after a VOD release you would still have an audience, but I could be wrong.

I know right now I don't really mind watching stuff at home because I have an ok setup of 120" screen. I know if I was only rocking a 65" or something I would still like going to the theater just because I love movies and grew up in the theaters, still remember going to see Jurassic Park and Independence Day opening weekend, theater just totally packed, it was a fun experience and one I still like. Just don't have the time for it now that I have kids, so theater at home works better for me now.

Pity but with others, Bond being the most recent example, getting delayed it seemed inevitable. Personally I'd rather see it at in a cinema once those reopen. So I guess there's that.

This is bullshit. A fucking 10 month delay to give WB the best chance at making loads of money? Honestly, fuck the studios for pulling shit like this. They are doing irreparable damage to theatres around the world with these greedy moves and it's basically a "fuck you" to everybody who wants to see the film. Hope somebody leaks it long before October 2021. Bond too.

I'm kinda mad too for the delay, but i really want the movie to be a box office hit and not bomb due to the lockdown or else there wont be any sequels...

Worst case scenario. If theatres do get shut down and can't reopen.
Movie studios might start creating their own movie theatre establishments and if this happens they might actually have a specific standard that all cinemas need to attain. Nothing more annoying than going to a theatre and the screen is too dark or the sound isn't set up properly.
