DUNE - Official Trailer

He didn't build Arakeen or Castle Caladan ffs. C'mon man!

That seems like a goalpost shift, weren't you comparing this to Lynch's version? Did Lynch build those? Do you actually know all the production ins and outs? Apparently not since you already claimed it'd be full of green screens. I get it, you want to be down on this movie no matter what, just don't use BS to back it up by insinuating they did anything with CGI/green screen they didn't have to use those methods for.

I mentioned 'sets' in both of those posts. And I also said green screen and cgi are being used. Quote my posts highlighting where the issue lies.

Then what are you claiming he didn't build? I linked you to an article where they said there's literally two scenes with green screen involving the main character lol. Obviously there would be CGI, a lot of this stuff can't be done well without it, the Lynch film being proof of that.

Let's get a few things straightened out:

'That seems like a goalpost shift, weren't you comparing this to Lynch's version?'
I compared the aesthetic - not the production method:

The first was the immense effort that when into quality and attention to the every detail. Nothing was stinted when it came to either of those. The second was the effort made to give the sets, props and costumes history. Things that belonged to Caladan, Arrakis or Geidi Prime reflected the culture, history and materials native to those worlds. The test of any costume or prop was to be able by its appearance alone tell what planet it came from. I think this philosophy went a long way into giving Dune its unique look...and it's a philosophy I've rarely seen employed in any other science fiction movie.
Ron Miller - Production Illustrator on Dune

'Did Lynch build those?'
Partially, as sets. Frank Herbert seemed happy enough with what he saw:

It might be worth pointing out, by the way, that Frank Herbert visited the sets at least one time—and even joined in on a Dune movie panel at the LA Worldcon—and was immensely pleased with what he saw—everyone had a copy of Dune somewhere close at hand and whenever a design question arose, the book was immediately consulted
Ron Miller - Production Illustrator on Dune

'Do you actually know all the production ins and outs?'
No.

'Apparently not since you already claimed it'd be full of green screens.'
ManaByte ManaByte posted a link, that you agree with by the way, confirming the use of green screens in multiple scenes. Additionally, quote me where I said 'full of green screens'.

'...insinuating they did anything with CGI/green screen they didn't have to use those methods for.'
Here you go again with presuming others thoughts - I never said or implied the above.

In fact no - I dare say it's you E Explosive Zombie - you're the bullshitter.

A lot of presumptions there. Nice effort but no, he used sets, green screens and a massive amount og cgi to achieve this versions aesthetic. Which as Stiflers Mom Stiflers Mom outlined seems to mimic and demure to the David Lynch release.

Nice try with your evasive new post but right here it's pretty clear what you meant. It's weird you mention using sets as a knock while admitting it's the same thing Lynch did? Can't even tell where you were going with any of this.

Wow! You're doing it again. Insanity. Let's just leave it at that :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Like always, different horses, different courses.
The original Dune movie has been such a mind blowing experience for me (and a lot of my friends) when I first saw it in the 80ies.
I am aware of the "problems" that movie has, and that it isn't very true to the book.

But: I see that trailer, and my feeling is what I described above. I see ->almost<- a scene for scene recreation of the old movie, but with it just looking so much more bland ->to me<-.

Your mileage may and will vary.

Can't tell if serious.
Obviously you have to look past the dodgy model effects and green screen work, its a product of its time. I'm talking about in 1984, you can tell just looking at that trailer that in 1984 people were probably like 'Damn this looks amazing, look at those sets, look at the scale', etc. The trailer for the new version looks very TV show like. And again its my most wanted film, and i'm only basing what i'm saying on this trailer. The full final film may well end up looking amazing.

So i've seen a lot of people complaining that there isn't enough representstion in the cast, especially for the Fremen. They argue that because the Fremen are inspired by the middle-east islamic cultures thry should have a bigger representstion in the cast.

Now i'm a simple man and i like simple solutions to problems - the Fremen are going on a crusade, not a jihad. Now crusades are strictly western and having islamic people playing the roles would be cultural apropriation. Change the word to Jihad and you can re-cast the whole crew if you want (maybe you'll even win an Oscar!)

There is going to be a situation where viewers see this movie without having first read the book. Some of them will then go on to read the text and find out things aren't quite what they seem. There will be triggerings that might lead to the original works being ammended. Given the spinlessness demonstrated by the vast majority in the creative fields in recent times it wouldn't cause me to bat an eye if that comes to pass.

What’s the deal with all these future sci movies with spaceships and shit using knives and swords 😂

I thought that too but apparently:

In this universe there’s an invention: The Holtzman Shield. It’s something that you can wear on your body, and will deflect something fast coming towards you. Only something slow can penetrate that shield. So, it made them use things like bullets less. Humanity went back to close combat, where you fight with knives and blades because it’s the only way you can kill someone through those shields. You can penetrate the shield slowly with the blade.

Hand to hand combat looks cooler anyway lol
A lot of people would appreciate being slowly penetrated by Aquaman.

Re-watched it again today to refresh myself.

It still looks like Edward Sissorhands Goes To Arrakis.

I know people keep saying "IT'S NOT A REMAKE".

But almost every shot in the trailer can be matched with Lynch's Dune (Someone on Twitter actually did it, I'll look for it again).

I thought Lynch's Dune was very different from the book? So why is so much of it in this version?

Lynch's Dune hits most of the main story beats of the book, just in very abbreviated and compressed fashion.

Ah, I see.

(I haven't read the book. It's one of those "I'll do it one day" things).

We're reading it for the book club thread this month if you care to join:

The Fremen live underground. And when they do go to the surface, they are covered from head to toe. So I guess they wouldn't even have have dark skin.

Resetera after a couple of sequels in which the Fremen go full ISIS on the universe:

Making the Fremen semitic is only inviting trouble.
On the other hand this isn't getting any sequels.

I really, really hope this series will finally get a movie series, but i also think this will be a two part one shot of the first book...
They could have made a series, GoT style... I really want to see God Emperor...

Geekpost alert: Shot on ARRI Large Format cameras and a native 4K DI, nice to see... though I'd like to see 2.20:1 ratio for a film like this, just gives you that little extra oomph while still maintaining the cinematic scope look and hearkening back to old 65mm stuff. Everything being 2.39:1 even when the content better suits 1.85:1 or 2.20:1 is getting a bit of a drag, far too many films feel claustrophobic in their framing even when claustrophobia doesn't feel like it's being intentionally conveyed.

If they thought that it wouldn't have bombed. Terminator and Ghostbusters look far more timeless from the same year. I prefer the new film's look because it's more accurate to the book descriptions.

I think the Paul books should be done as a movie series, and then the Leto II books as an HBO Max tv show.

The best thing about Lynch's Dune was the TOTO soundtrack. The movie itself is a Wikipedia summary of the Dune story.

Fucking hipster directors

What’s with them phasing when they are fighting?

They are personal force shields that block high relative velocity objects; to penetrate them, IIRC you have to move a weapon at a certain variable speed and angle into them. Projectile weapons will be blocked due to their high kinetic energy, and laser weapons will cause a substantial detonation on impact, so you are left with only being able to use careful melee strikes on someone equipped with them, as they can move their limbs and body to increase the relative velocity of your weapon and trigger the shield's effect.

Firing a laser at a shield in Dune lore creates a powerful blast like a nuclear explosion wiping out every thing in a huge area.

I've just read Liet Kynes gender swapped to female in this movie. What the hell! Why?
C'mon, you know why!

I read all of the books in junior high (barely remember anything from those two billion pages these days) and watched the Lynch version and enjoyed it. I am interested in this one due to Villeneuve's involvement and just wanting to see Dune tackled again. The trailer seems solid, and even though I knew it was coming, the appearance of the sandworm at end got me tingling a bit. Not the same sort of tingles I get when your mom sucks on a Popsicle in a very inappropriate manner in front of me, obviously, but more of an excited anticipation tingle. Looking forward to it!

The character gets killed in this film though! When the Atreides Palace gets attacked by the Harkonen and the Emperors Sardukar.
I also think the trailer at 1.35 shows the Sardukars in all black attacking the Atreides just for a second.
