Dunkey Presents: The Slickness of Red Dead Redemption 2

Great game, no doubt... BUT it pales in comparison to RDR.

I wouldn't say pales but in hindsight I also think RDR had something else, more of a classic western feel, it's objectively less in its parts but the sum of it was somehow a bit more. It's hard to pinpoint maybe it was the locations, Armadillo was the epitome of the Wild West town, the fact that you went to Mexico... not to say RDR2 had bad locations, Valentine was incredible too but so much of the game happens in the American South that it missed that old Western movie film je ne sais quoi, they also tried to pull a Mexico with Guarma but it wasn't the same. I also slightly prefer the ambient music because it conveyed some more loneliness in those vast landscapes, plus moments like entering Mexico are unforgettable. From a gameplay perspective I think the game was more fun too, the wanted system from 1 allowed for more GTA style mayhem than RDR2, which is what you end up doing when story mode is finished.... anyway.

I've said it many times and i'll say it again, it's the single best game of all time by a long ass way.

The story, characters, voice acting, visuals, open world, detail, soundtrack, side content and what not are unmatched.

Gameplay wise I'll admit the gunplay wasn't good but whatever, auto-aim on and the rest of the game makes up for it.
Aim and cover system are shit, the gunplay when the bullets actually touch the enemies is sublime and better than most dedicated tps.

Archaic mission structure, repetitive missions, awful gunplay, terribly long animations that take you out of experience, gameplay that feels like a chore... Yeah, RDR2 is single most overrated game of all time.

I say that as someone who has RDR1 in his top 10 games of all time.

As someone who find shooters and aiming, particularly with a controller, very boring (I can't stand the gameplay in Uncharted for example, I just find that boring), I actually really enjoyed the auto-aim in RDR2, it made it feel more snappy and more like an action game with guns rather than a shooter / aiming game. Kind of a more arcade feel similar to some older games, which might sound weird compared to all the rest of the game being so simulation heavy, but yeah lol It worked for me, and dead eye is quite cool.

The worst thing about the game for me is the wanted system, and the police in general.
It's incredibly frustrating that you might be wanted for a crime you commited in the woods, in the middle of nowhere, and the police will teleport near you out of nowhere...
Worst of all, the police seem to be all knowing and they will always know exactly where you are.

I remember a time when I tried to do a mission completely stealth, I used the bow and managed to infiltrate the manor and kill everyone without an alert. At some point however, suddenly I become wanted, I guess an NPC must have spotted a body. I'm at the second floor of a manor, hidden in a room, and I see the police on the mini map, entering the house, going to the upper floor... and coming to the room I'm in. They know exactly where you are, all the time.
This is the most immersion breaking thing in RDR2, and I really don't understand why they programmed it like this when all the rest of the game is so immersive, really weird decision.

Outside of this, absolutely fantastic game, I'd love to play more open world as good and alive as this one.

Yeah the wanted system was broken, it was very annoying to be a bad dude in the game, there was always some fucking witness everywhere.

If you are using auto aim and proclaming the shooting is bad, thats on you.

Use expert mode, which is just free aim. Put the controls on FPS STANDARD, a preset that's available to you in GTA V and RDR2.
Put deadzones to 0.

Game shoots like a dream

I've been dying to play it again. But I am still holding out hope for 60fps.

amazing and amazing game.

as time has passed, it has been stuck in ma mind. witcher 3 is my goat, but see, RDR is coming up on it, purely on what I remember from the game, such a fantastic experience. great world great characters, heavy gameplay, but with a nice focus towards realism.

sucks they haven't ported the game for XSX and PS5. Just stupid they haven't
I played both games back to back in 2018. Gaming hasn't been the same since.

Well said. RDR also had more freedom in missions to play them without those awful boundaries of part two.
