Dust: An Elysian Tail coming to Steam May 24th

Finished the game.

Definitely enjoyed it, but it felt like it was a chapter too short.
Not too surprising, considering a chapter had to be cut.

I'm only up to the beginning of Chapter 3, myself. Haven't touched the game in a few days, since I think playing it at late hours was throwing my sleep schedule into even greater whack than it already was in.

With regards to what I have played, though, Chapter 2 seemed surprisingly well-done.
I never once talked to PaPop, assuming I even could do so, and yet felt rather disappointed at the death of this character I'd never directly interacted with. Good job with the writing there.

Does the game get any harder? Playing on Tough, and defeated Fuse with ease. Maybe I should play on Hardcore instead

It's the spikes and platforming elements that will kill you on tough/hardcore, not so much the enemies. Having to burn through so many healing items every time I forget to switch from the analog stick to the d-pad for jumps really sucks. On hardcore there isn't even any invulnerability after you get hit, so environmental damage winds up being a 1-hit death pretty often.

I gotta say, getting double jump is always the BEST feeling in a metroidvania. You suddenly have so much freedom!! I remember just how liberating it was to get the double and then triple jump in Shadow Complex.

So uh... Dishwasher gets an unofficial PC port.
Well at least now all of the cameos in Dust might be meaningful to a PC audience. Spelunky was announced for PC yesterday as well (in an official sense).

I don't have a 360, have never had a 360, and have no plans on getting one in the future, so the "just buy it for 360" argument just does not compute. I have to admit though, seeing that mysterious black and white character with the clawed feet in Dust piqued my curiosity.

Never played this on xbla, but this game did convince me to buy a usb controller for my PC. Having an absolute blast playing this, even though Im still early in chapter 1.
I just beat Fuse.

Ya those went right over my head.

That actually means you're late in chapter 1, but anyway...

I'm having a blast. Like some godly combo of Bayonetta, Metroidvanias, RPG systems and just general radness. I mean some things are a little imprecise and it feels like I dust storm every time instead of doing the XXYYY combo moves or something but I can't really complain

Oh and I'm having real difficulty countering :<

Depends on the enemy. Most telegraph their attacks, so it's a matter of learning when that attack is about to land, and hitting/holding the sword button/LMB at that precise moment. I still have trouble with a few enemies, though (the slimes, in particular), while I can do other enemies with ease (the Chapter 2 boss, for instance).

I do tend to just mash LMB, myself. Maybe RMB->LMB to kick things up into the air, but relatively rarely. Aerial Dust Storm often, ground Dust Storm not-so-often, Fidget + Dust Storm even less.

There doesn't seem to be any point in countering small enemies. You can just dust storm and combo them into oblivion. I don't know how you'd even be able to see them attacking unless you totally stopped your offensive and waited.

Well, I just finished this, and it's pretty much everything I wanted it to be.

How do you get the rainbow resonance gem to get through the Bastion area

The biggest trick about countering is that it's a hold, not a tap. If you know that it's insanely easy. So, watch for an incoming attack, just before your opponent's strike press and HOLD X (or Left Mouse) and make sure the button is held while you are being 'hit'. Queue flashy colors.

Yep, that move is clutch. I sort of regret introducing it so late into the game, but what's done is done.

I was thoroughly enjoying the game until I encountered
the necromancers
. Fuck those guys man. What a huge difficulty spike.

Actually not too bad when you realise they don't attack you directly. After that it's just a matter of building meter and then electricity storming all day erry day.

Just finished. Fucking rad for (mostly) one guy's work. Kind inspiring, really... kinda want to poke around with game maker now and see if I can prototype out some stuff...

Noogy, you crazy man. Crazy awesome.

Yeah I figured that out about a day later but thanks for the reply though. Discovered by accident that there's where I can get an easy 1000 hit combo too!

This popped to the top of my backlog docket yesterday. Combat, music, and animation all smooth as buddah. Can't turn off voices, and they seem mated to the dialogue boxes themselves. Oh well, Fidget you shrill monkeybird pixie you may jabber on at will, I guess.

Playing through Trine 2 for the first time has made me really appreciate how the minimap in Dust tells your if you haven't finished looting a section. So frustrating to play through a 20 min long chapter in Trine only to find out that you missed one out of like 40 experience orbs, and have no idea where it might have been.

There should be a new game + option or a late game item that gives you that functionality.

Really? I wish I had known that ahead of time. I'm a completionist and it's destroying my will to continue with the game when I have to replay an entire chapter in order to search high and low for the one little obscure thing I missed.

Hold up there Hoos, I should have phrased that sentence better since I see how you can interpret it that way.

I was making a suggestion for better game design, I've never actually played Trine 1 or 2. Though I have the former in my library.

Gah :(

Well the game doesn't have "sections", so to speak, like Dust, but it does have checkpoints, so they could have made it so that the checkpoint markers glow an unusual color if you've gotten all exp orbs up to that point.

So how do I get all treasure items in this place?
I have looked everywhere and can't find any treasure item

Those open circles are treasure items.

You will probably have to come back later with some new abilities.

My question was a big vague, I am sorry.
What I meant was how to get all the treasures in the highlighted room. I am in the chapter five now. Last skill I got was double jump. Is there more skills to acquire? Like drop like a rock in those wind holes?

I noticed Dust is 50% off on Steam right now. Bite now, or wait for potentially better savings during the summer sale?

Best case scenario, you are talking about saving 3 dollars more.
I guess you have just to decide if 3 dollars are a worthy of waiting one or two of weeks.

How long would you guys say the game is to beat? With and without full completion?

My only concerns are that the art style is a little offputting and how long the game really is.

I think it took me about 17h to 100% it. You could probably easily beat it under 10h, but it's still pretty lengthy. And the art is fine.

HowLongtoBeat.com is a great site to judge how much time to allocate to games, I use it to try to rank what games in my backlog to work on and how much time I want to spend.

Sorry for the rise from the grave... but thanks Noogy for putting this on Steam!

My 360 crapped out, and on a whim I felt like playing Dust, so I picked it up on Steam. Now I'm playing while listening to the new F Buttons album :). Having a great night :-D.
