Dust: An Elysian Tail |OT| Become the Storm

Yeah, the music, the incredible design of
the ghost
, the footsteps that almost sound like a heartbeat, the
doors that don't lead back to the right place
. It wasn't over done or difficult, but it did a great job at setting freaky mood. Just awesome! I finished up the Sorrowing Meadows last night. I want to play more now, but I'm stuck at work.

I am admittedly a huge fan of good horror games (the Fatal Frame series being my favorite). I wanted to have some sort of horror element in Dust:AET that wasn't 'too' out of place, and am happy with how the mansions came out.

That said, I wouldn't mind doing a straight up horror game sometime. We've had discussions regarding this.

Both of these have been added to my bug list, and I'm actually getting on an update very soon. May I ask, when it crashes underground, is it as the scene transitions between maps? Do you have a specific location? Thanks.

There is chance that mutlithreading between maps is causing issues. Also related to trying to speedrun. VERY hard to test, but I'll do my best.

That's great news! Yes, it crashes during the transition from the world map to the Cragmoor Caverns area. The latter never even appears. The last thing I see before getting booted is the area map -- to choose my point of entry. (There's only one option because most of the map is unexplored, even though I played through a large portion of that region, found a sheep, completed the doll/box quest, etc.

By the way, I am not speed running at all. Just trying to play through the game as normal.

Wow, some idiot on Aftonbladet is ripping into this game. Just doing a quick and rough translation of some parts but take a look at this.

http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/spela/recensioner/article15317713.ab

”Dust: An Elysian tail” has a fantastic story. Sadly its not to be found inside the game.

”Dust: An Elysian tail” is "beautiful" in the same way that "South Park" is; you can tell its handmade and there is some charm in it. The characters look like north-korean copies of Disney characters. The backgrounds look like if "Klonoa" mated with "Castlevania". The soundtrack is so grand that it couldn't resist itself from touching bigger movie themes like "Inception".

”Dust: An Elysian tail” may have art that looks like your grandmother painted, laughable voiceacting and being decorated with Saddam Husseins restraint. But it is also a perfect example of why its sometimes worth the effort of keeping up with the tired indiescenes retro fad.

In some places the atmosphere is so thick that you could cut it with a knife, crystal clear waterfalls, glimmering magic woods and caves big as cathedrals, where the footsteps sounds like cannons being fired and hidden treasures bath in a golden light. Sadly this is interchanged with long paths so ugly that I wish I could play this game with blindfolded.

It did get a 3/5 though.

Yep, I'm actually working on that this week. I'm trying to integrate some sketches/music in development as well, to flavor it a bit. I also did a thing for Polygon but it hasn't gone up yet, I'll see what's up with that.

I can keep trying to speed run the game if you want more testing done, I have to say when I played the game slow and soaked in everything I never had a problem, now that I am running as fast as possible I get a problem every time at some point.

The first BSOD I had was near the end where you get the
wind jump boost ability
and on the way back up where you can shoot straight past a key to the screen above in under a second the game crashed, guess I went too fast heh.

Finished the main game!

Man that final boss went on forever. 4 different times? Even the final one was basically me ganking him when he jumped back from the Lava. Maybe I needed to do more sidequests before facing him. Either way, done for now

Just finished the first quarter of Chapter 3 (I think). The music is so good it had me on edge during
that first escape scenario
. Is the OST out yet? Would be nice to have a high quality digital version to listen to.

Any idea what's coming up in the patch? Haven't had any issues yet other than one random crash at the start of Chapter 2.

I just finished it. Loved it.
I maxed DUST during the last level. Defeated the boss without any problem ^^
Thanks for having made that game.

Hey! We're currently mastering the music so it should be in a few weeks when we've done a final pass on the music that we can announce a release date! Wanna get this out super fast! Glad you enjoyed it! As for the patch, that's all Dean town so he'll have to reply to that.

I love this game! It's so fun and addicting. I was trying to find everything before finishing the game to level up enough to beat the boss and was having some trouble finding this one material, the stone feeler. Gamefaqs says that it should drop from squirt-bugs. I've been killing the green ant-like things that I believe are squirt-bugs without success. Any help would be appreciated!

Finished the game yesterday (ending was freakin' awesome and that music was just beautiful) and loved all the 18hrs that I've spent with the game, still playing though since I'm going for 100% - it's so fun and addicting to go back at earlier levels with your new abilities to find new stuff and even new areas plus there's always the challenges...definitely one of the best games on XBLA.

Congrats to Noogy and HyperDuck, the game is amazing! ^_^

Two questions:

Is there a way to compare items in the shop to what you currently have equipped?

Is there a way to identify which items are needed in a blueprint (items that I don't have)? I have a particular print that requires a blue-ish rock-ish item but the shopkeeper has about four very similar items and I'm not sure which is which; and I have limited coin at the moment.

Thanks.

Complete with a blanket dis of the 'indiescene' at the end. It is a bit creepy in that it reminds me of a bizarre review of Skyward Sword on some no-name site which seemed to lambaste the game because it was supposedly full of "Japanese perversion" and was gateway child porn or something (seriously).

Pretty sure the enemy you're looking for are the flying round balls of tentacle things that squirt something at you if they live long enough. They're found down in the caves, typically in groups of three or so.

Edit:

I could be wrong but from what I remember if you go into the blueprint and click on the needed item (assuming it's catalogued) it'll take you to the merchant screen to purchase it and already be right on the exact item so you don't need to figure out which one it is.

Got a free copy thanks to Noogy but I ended up buying a copy of Dust from GS to give to my cousin for his bday yesterday. From the looks of it he's enjoying it since he's playing it or Minecraft now.

Hey Noogy, since you're looking into it.

My first crash was the first big drop/transition when you first first go into the caverns.

The second crash was at the aurora fruit stall and I was crafting and doing it really really quickly.

It never "crashed" per se, but would boot back to the dashboard.

Also the sound is very quiet on my basic little 5.1 setup. The sound also goes funny and choppy while on the inventory menu.

Aside from that I couldn't adore this game any more than I do.

Awesome, thanks, that reaffirms a few things I'm looking at, as well as possibly upping the global volume level. I'm actually getting on some of that stuff this week.

Don't let Chris hear that, the only way I get him to do anything is with insults and racial slurs against him and his peoples. But yes, I'm quite fond of our soundtrack, and he's busy wrapping up the OST, which has turned into a monster.

Sad but true, me and my family. Toughened me up though.

Here's an interview I did with Samit Sarker of Polygon. It's nice to get this story out there. I'm still working on a Post Mortem as well, which should be up over the next week.
Awesome article. I usually really like how the Verge goes about their content and it's great to see you on there!

I STILL haven't gotten a chance to play and it's killing me, but I'm trying to get a job in the industry and be more eSports. Just got back home yesterday after PAX.

Maybe I'll forgo some sleep and fire it up late tonight.

If it helps, I gave Dust 5/5, but I'd only give sleep a very respectable 4.5/5
It already got a 5/5 from me playing it at PAX East and I couldn't lose my smile as I noticed a dozen tiny little flairs of the game and never had to fight the controls.

Finished it.

My final save says 113%. I have all 21 side quests, I believe I catalogues everything.

But I was level 54 and I wasn't carrying everything I had found/crafted. Do I need to be to have full completion?

Great experience. Clocked 20 hours on a casual playthrough. Will go again on tough.

You need to 4* all the challenge rooms.

I just received my Nov issue of OXM (the one with Gears Judgement on the cover). The 9.5 review of Dust:AET is in there (pg 72), but I have to say I think the game looks unexpectedly cool in print for some reason. I might need to horde a few copies.

When do you get the down/A slide move? I have opened a part of the map that requires it but have no idea where to obtain it. Help?

I finally got a new Xbox (after suffering three different cases of the RRoD with my old one, grrr), so I'm just finding out about this game. It looks spectacular, and it is incredibly badass that a GAFfer made it. Funds are very tight right now (because, ya know, I just dropped a large sum of money on a system that I had already invested hundreds of dollars in to get fixed in the past, and I'm a poor college kid), but I'll definitely try to support my GAF brother when I have some extra income! It seems like a title I would genuinely love.

Congratulations on the success my man, us GAFfers are very proud of you!

You know, I've seriously been thinking about it, and Chris (my composer) and I have talked a lot about doing an artbook/OST combo. Admittedly I'm looking into printing options as it's not something I've ever done before.

Do it! I would pay good money for it.. Kickstarter it, something!

Also, I just beat the game yesterday, it was wonderful! I gotta go back and fully clear it though.. but I will do it gladly!

I would kill for a deluxe edition of the game with an Artbook/OST, and a physical disc. The game is way too good for just a digital product.

Man I love this game but the checkpointing! I'm fighting
Gaius
and holy shit it sends me into rage when I get to his second form, get him down to nothing and he one shots me.

First beat the game when I was at like level 37, and
Gaius
was a huge challenge.

After screwing around, 4-starring all the challenges and getting all the best equipment and becoming level 52, things changed drastically. I literally
lightning aerial dust stormed him to death. All 4 or 5 segments
. Didn't even have to use a health item.

Real fun game. Great work Noggy.

Yeah, one shot kills.... I'm considering doing something about that for the update. I don't necessarily want to make that encounter easier since some people are able to fly through it with a bit of grinding, but I agree that one shot kills are a bit... unbalanced. Maybe some sort of limiter to ensure no hit consumes more that a set % of your total HP. Tinkering.

You are much better at this game than me :(

I would try, grind, try grind, try grind... Finally, I had to give up to avoid breaking a controller. Got up to level 48 or so (plus crafted up some better stuff while grinding) and couldn't get past the 4th stage. Deleted the game. Still have my save, though.

Absolutely loved the game. So much fun and so much content for only $15.

The end did sour my experience, though. If I was able to change the difficulty on the fly (tough was obviously too high a level for me) then I could have avoided the problem.

Grah, only two indie guys left and I don't have enough keys. Merchants are outta keys too. Do they restock them? I cant find any key location guides online... :(

They don't restock. There's an exact amount of keys for everything to be unlocked after collecting all of them and buying all.

i should've simply hunted for the Indie dudes instead of opening random treasure chests. hunting for the keys are gonna be annoying.

Some chests contain keys, so you would have probably ended short if you'd avoided all the chests you saw. Keys are all marked on the map as treasure though, so they shouldn't be too hard to find. There's a fair amount in the last area.
