Curiously, there are several releases this week for which Amazon does not have boxart images, which makes me suspicious. One of them is the 1996 Kenneth Branagh Hamlet, which would be great news if the running time wasn't listed as 115 minutes (the original running time of the director's cut was four hours). Also listed without pics are the Robert Redford version of The Great Gatsby and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Television: Cosby Show S1 (finally, though the episodes are apparently the 22-min. syndicated cuts), Dukes of Hazzard S4, Hearts Afire S1, and an X-Files mythology repackaging.

So Branagh's fabulous Hamelt is getting a butchered release? That's just plain wrong. I remember seeing it in the theaters and not even noticing how long it was. I'd definately buy this on Tuesday if it was the full cut.

edit: Did a little googling and found this email from someone at Warner, looks like a 10th Anniversary Edition is coming next year.

The Ghostbusters set is pretty cheap, but it's so very, very lame that they aren't adding anything new to the DVDs themselves, other than a couple Real Ghostbusters episodes. And I know that Ghostbusters 2 is inferior to the first movie, but isn't it still deserving of some actual extras?

Downfall is a very good movie, you guys shouldnt miss it

Fantastic film, saw a it back in February at the theater, but I don't think I could justify a purchase, unelss you're a WWII historian/buff.

This is a pretty slick little thriller from Vincenzo Natalli, the guy who directed Cube. Awful looking box, though. Comes off like some odd Paycheck/Space Channel 5 hybrid. Certainly worth a rent if you like the lite sci-fi stuff, X-Files, or what have you.

Repeated for truth. It's an amazing experience watching this, and Bruno Ganz is simply incredible, but it was really not something I could hang on to. I only imported the German disc earlier in the year because there wasn't a theater playing it for hundreds of miles. Resold it for a profit, at least. :)

Not a bad week, I guess, I plan on renting alot though

Buy:
Ghostbusters Collection
S.W.A.T (UMD)

Rent:
Alexander
Guess Who?
Downfall (Hopefully my store will get this, you guys better be right about this being good)

Supposedly has remastered video, deleted scenes and commentary that the old versions didn't have. Only $13 at Best Buy, so I don't think I can pass that up.

Hmm.. yeah.. just checked my discs and the Ghostbusters 1 did have commentary, but 2 didn't. Best Buy's version (or maybe all of them) comes with the art/sketch book I guess.

Anyway, I'll probably end up getting the Ghostbusters set eventually... I don't think there'll be any rereleases with new extras until HD hits. But it's a shame that Sony has treated the movies so badly.

It is a shame because the Criterion Laser Disc of Ghostbusters has an ASS LOAD of special features on it.

Maybe Criterion will make their own Ghostbusters DVD.

No, I'm pretty sure that the remastered video and the cartoon eps are the only things new here. Gotta see a review to be certain, though.

Looks like even the menus are the same. And still no GB2 extras.

For $13 it's still a deal if (like me) you don't already have them. I'm loving the cheap prices of many DVDs these days.

Yeah... it's still too good a price to pass up. A Criterion release, as much as I might like to see it, strikes me as highly unlikely -- the DVD market today is very different from the laserdisc market in 1988, and high-profile, non-niche movies aren't that likely to be licensed to Criterion. (Of course, the inexplicable Michael Bay exceptions remain.)

it's a really good movie, despite the OMG GAY hate. give it a rent at least.
I don't think that was really the target of most of the criticism, except for the usual fundie suspects.

Shit, Ebert criticized it for not being gay ENOUGH.

Anyone know if the director's cut has more Rosario Dawson boobies? Damn Oliver Stone and his choice of scene lighting!

I heard the first DVD release has MST3K style commentaries. Is it the same with these?

WTF is going on with Colin Farrel's mouth?! It's like the movie wasn't ridiculous enough so an artist rendered his mouth so it's stupid big to fit along with the bullshit of the movie

Suncoast just called to tell me that my copy of Ghostbusters 1 & 2 would be arriving tomorrow. :D

I already put $5 down on it, so I only have to give them another $9. Damn good deal.

Can somebody with the Ghostbusters Gift Set please confirm that both movies are Widescreen. I just bought my copy from Circuit City for $12.99 but the back of the box is kind of confusing; under Ghsotbusters Special Features, it says that is WideScreen, but in the box at the bottom where it tells you the languages, subtitles, etc. it says that Ghostbusters 1 is Full Screen at a ratio of 1.33:1 and Ghostbusters 2 is WideScreen at a ratio of 2.40:1

So please anybody with an open copy, please confirm this. I don't want to open my copy and find out that it is Full Screen, because it will be impossible to return it once opened.

don't have a copy yet, but im pretty sure that is a typo. Packaging shots were originally released a couple months ago with teh fullscreen for part 2 written on the back, caused an uproar, and the company came out and assured people both would be widescreen. I guess they didn't get a chance to fix the back by release, but im pretty sure they should both be widescreen.

What??

I just bought that on my lunch break when I went to Best Buy, and didn't even bother to open the box or look at the back of it.

If I can get away from my desk this afternoon, I'll go out to my car and look at the packaging more closely.

Just in case I just going to wait before I open my copy for some brave soul to test it. I will hate to have the first movie in Full Screen only.

Confirmed at DVD Empire:
The outer case mislabels Ghostbusters as being in Fullscreen only. Both films are presented in their original aspect ratios in Anamorphic Widescreen with no Fullscreen viewing option.

Ghostbusters
Filmmakers' Commentary
Deleted Scenes
Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes
Optional French Audio

Ghostbusters 2
2 Animated Ghostbusters Episodes
Optional Portuguese Audio

Collectible Scrapbook

Video: Widescreen 2.40:1 Color (Anamorphic)
Widescreen 2.35:1 Color (Anamorphic)

Thanks Prospero, definatelly it is a mislabel. I just opened my copy and the plastic case for Ghostbusters has the right information and list the movie as Anamorphic Widescreen and the ratio is 2.40:1

Just watched a little bit in my computer at work and it is Widescreen :)

Haha, every board I've been to today is FREAKING OUT about the box being mislabeled. This was first reported on DVDAnswers months ago when the box scans first came out; Columbia even responded with a CORRECT box-back, but it looks like it's not on the retail copies.

Is it sad that I'm going to go buy the Ghostbusters set when I already have it, just for the Real Ghostbusters episodes? Or is it just an indication that someone needs to get off their fucking ass and bring RGB to DVD already? Seriously, what the fuck is taking so long. The anniversary came and went, they even have these two remastered episodes, what the fuck? I want Real Ghostbusters / Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters box sets, God dammit!! How can shit like JEM get a box set and not RGB?

*cries with fury*

Wait a second...it has episodes of The Real Ghostbusters on it?!?
OH MY LORD!
I have every episode on tape (bought on eBay), but the quality isn't great...this is awesome.

It's only 2 episodes... and I've heard it's Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters. Still, one hopes that Sony is testing the waters for a full set by including the episodes here.

Awwww, are you serious? Why the hell did they do that? Wouldn't it make more sense to put, I don't know, the first two episodes of the series on there, since it follows the movie? That's retarded, but I'll still end up buying it again jst for those episodes. ;_;
