E3 2005: Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo disapoints.

That should be the headline for this year's E3. Seriously, am I the only one who feels that the big three companies totally rushed their consoles this generation? All that microsoft showed was gameplay footage with VERY early builds, games that stutters, ennemies that act weird and all. Then you have Sony who unveals the PS3 in concept and mostly only has cutscenes and CGs to show for the games. And finally You've got Nintendo, who only gave us a few info and the console design.

Man I'm bummed. I wish none of these consoles would of been announced this year, I wish this would still of been an E3 of xbox, ps2 and gamecube.

I think that microsoft is a bit to blame because they're playing the forcing hand with releasing the xbox 360 in november but that's just me.

What do you guys feel about this E3 and all this next gen stuff? Are you as bummed as I am or you're pretty excited?

I haven't just got a ticket for the hype train, I've booked a carriage on it and partying with my mates in an orgy of alchohol, narcotics and dodgy web streams.

All Aboard Ho!

:lol

I'm excited and bummed.

Microsoft forced everyones hand and have turned me off to their vision. And they've done it when one of the better consoles of history is in it's prime. Nice job. Everything should be secondary to games and you should have learned that. I have next to no desire to pick up the sequel and it's media center online, eBay experience.

Sony whooped them at their own game. E3 is about excitement and not much else and pretty much everyone I talked to is excited about the PS3. They've increased their brand value.

Nintendo stunk and for once didn't have a surprise...but be honest, beyond riling the insane who follow them religiously, they've sucked for awhile. They still have time to make a case for having their different sort of machine next to the PS3. Just like this gen. All this insider talk about holograms and Xbox comparable specs are bullshit. And good thing too, because no one would care (outside of GAF).

Sony impressed me sofar..

The PS3 looks like it could be an even *stronger* product (compared to its next-gen competitiors) than the PS2 is compared to GCN and XBOX today...

Scary thought....

you've been bitching these last two fucking days, mostly screaming like a jackass in basically every thread "STOP BEING EXCITED ABOUT PS3 ITS ALL PRERENDERED NONE IS REAL WAA~WA~WA".
Just shut the hell up, have some warm milk, go to sleep, and wake up next Christmas when these systems are out.

No idea what you're talking about but you don't have the right person. All I was saying is that I haven't seen any ps3 gameplay footage yet is all, never said it was pre-rendered cg, I said it was cutscenes. Now you go to bed and take some milk :P

So showing current versions is wrong... giving us a glipse of what it will look like (maybe exagreated slightly) is wrong... and not showing anything is wrong..... So what IS right?

I'd have preferred all the next gen stuff was done at next year's show, but it was inevitable. I'm still not buying anything until 2006 so I don't really care.

It seems I'm the only one who beleives MS is going to gain market share. I think they have delivered a strong product ahead of everyone else (games were a bit meh but they will improve). I do not think they rushed it too much, only complaint is the inclusion of a HD great from the consumers perspective but bad from a cost reduction point of view. Ah yes another pitfall is probably the Sony marketing team as they somehow in a manner I am yet to fathom just get a hype, disinformation and expectation ball rolling so quickly and effectively that it boggles the mind.

As for Sony my only complaints are no triggers on controller and GPU is a bit of a rush job. Yes we have been working on it for 2 years and have only managed to build a cell to gpu bridge.

Not showing anything, hence why I said all 3 companies rushed their next gen console.

Yawn.

I remember asking a question in my thread:

What do you guys feel about this E3 and all this next gen stuff? Are you as bummed as I am or you're pretty excited?

So if you don't feel like answering and if you find it boring, you can leave the thread. Thank you for showing up, though.

Not keen for MS, Sony looked good but shocking controller and no online plans announced

I'm a little bummed about the Revolutions not really showing up, now if I could just get rid of this whopping hardon for how good the red console looks.......

Track records as I see them...

Sony always shows great stuff at E3 and delivery way less.

Microsoft shows early builds and delivers when the time comes to ship.

Nintendo....eh?

Haha, personally I like the black one but out of the 3 console designs, the Revolution is easily the sexiest.

same shit every year... gaf raises expectations so high that they are all disappointed.

I thought it was a great E3... hell it just started. Lots to come. The 360 is going to be a great console, the PS3 will be a great console, and by the looks of things the Revolution will also be a great console.

...and I don't want to wait another year for a new console. This generation was more than ready to die. No HDTV, no online gaming for Nintendo, and severely dated graphics on PS2.

For everyone else that thinks this gen is ending too soon, there's still several hundred games in development. Keep gaming on what you got. Why would that change?

Considering how Revolution and PS3 won't be out until 2006, I think what has been given is typical. X360 is coming out this year so this was its big debut. Although it disappoints, there still is time to correct the slowdown, which usually happens.

Shadow of the Colossus? God of War? GT4? They could have popped Colossus on xbox 360 and you would have gotten more oohs and ahhs than most of the titles that MS has shown to date.

Also don't think that PS2 is going anywhere, with an 80 millionish installed base and only a fraction of that ready to jump ahead to next gen systems at the end of this year, Sony has all the ground to stand on when supporting its current gen hardware.

Next gen also tripled cost of title development and until more middleware support is released, be prepared to see UE3 everywhere.

That said, I'm pretty stoked with everything I've seen from Sony. MS has a couple gems in there (gears of war and need for speed - which I may add is more impressive than the test drive screens), but I really haven't seen anything that looks light years ahead of what the current gen xbox is capable of on the exclusives side.

I will say this one more time, MS is not stupid the reason why they did that MTV thing was to generate which they accomplished by reaching to the average consumer who cares no less about difference in raw power between the 360 and the PS3. Now E3 is for us fanboys, again the average consumer does not even what E3 is. So stop this nonsense, i have had enough of this shit.

Id say xbox and nintendo had dissapointing ones, and sony had a quite impressive, revealing one. (And Im no sony fan, have never owned a console of theirs). Nintendo just didnt show a lot and opted to wait closer to their launch. Microsofts was just boring and unfocused...

I agree, and I'm there. I'm feeling pretty underwhelmed after the conferences, but hopefully the show itself will deliver some good hands-on experiences.

dude i have been on those since it launched, still quit this shit

It's funny what demo reels can do to the expectations of people.

MS made the mistake of not showing real-time demos that don't represent gameplay. We've all seen those nvidia/ati demos for their latest cards and they look quite nice. We also know the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be much more powerful than what's currently available, and as obviously shown in the PS3 demos. All this is tossed away when sheep-like behavior rules and underwhelming games, that do not represent the full potential of a console are shown.

I am interested in the opinions of actual developers, rather than media, as they should have a clearer idea of the capabilities for next gen consoles.

Overall, I am partially disappointed. Mainly in MS and Nintendo.

Disappointments:
- Nintendo's conference was awful. No next-gen content. Not even a clear understanding of their next-gen approach.
- Microsoft's conference was unsurprising. They had next-gen content, but they had shown everything already.

Some comments:
- PGR3, GoW and GR3 look fantastic, and certainly do not disappoint as next-gen titles.
- PD0 was the big big big loser by not showing up, clearly an indication of Rare's messed up management and direction. The fact that they didn't even show a clip about it, be it pre-rendered or not is very troubling.
- Kameo looks nice, yet not that impressive. I expected more from Rare.
- Team Ninja disappointed me. DoA4 looked nice, yet I've come to expect impressive looking titles from them and DoA4 was far from impressive. Save for some cloth and fiber physics issues, the game seemed to run very smoothly (seemed 60 fps.) This would be great if this was the final kit, but this isn't. It seems they are holding back for some reason. I still have hope they will deliver, though.
