E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

The more that Nintendo's E3 2008 sucks (like E3 2003), the better.

Cuz then Nintendo's E3 2009 will be TEH AWESOME, like E3 2004, amiright ? :lol

Even from a pure marketing/economic standpoint, I'm rather shocked that Nintendo is apparently only releasing 2 Wii games during the holiday season. It doesn't seem to make much sense.
Wii sells like crazy and Nintendo can not get enough of those things in stores so they release like 10 new games to make people cry they can not play them because they do not have the system yet? On the other hand nearly all major franchises are out once already. For Wii and for DS. And perhaps you heard Iwata when he talked about longlife of games.

I'm starting to think Nintendo is trying to get a lot of people into gaming and to grow their gaming habbits to buy the next versions of Mario and Zelda for example.

I wasn't expecting a ton. I knew it would be like last year. I didn't think it would be worse. At least WiiFit was a novel casual game. It was interesting even if it isn't your style. There was nothing novel or original this time.

WiiSports Resort seems a bit rushed, not in its quality but with the grouping of the few sports shown; I guess I might have been less disappointed if it wasn't called Resort. I've never been in a sword fight at a resort.

there's like 8 months before it is released..........
and 1:1 isn't new?

There's been historical precedent for major announcements to take place during E3 outside of the main press conferences, right?

RIGHT???

Only that one time they showed off the SSBB trailer.

And PSU was shown off on a Friday too. Too bad both were awful.

I think it will be really good, especially if it has online. I think it will be just as high quality as the original. It's still just disappointing. Last year there was a whole bunch of additional info that leaked outside of the press conference. Maybe this still happens. It doesn't help that all of E3 really blew either (so far).

The only thing I'm disappointed about is third parties missing a golden opportunity to get major sales. Nintendo has opened the door to success but third parties are still not going in.

Ahh yes...Hal_Lab's Retro prediction. Forgot about that...he's been mia since that post though.

I suppose that Retro is now working on Wii Casual Crap Alfa, with a Mii instead of Samus.

WTF.

The overreactions are just as amazing as the damage control.

No wonder this thread is the biggest of the three mega-conference threads. :lol

So, this should be a overreaction. Explain me why.

Because you're typing your rage on a message board on the internet. OH I'LL NEVER BUY THIS AGAIN I'M SELLING MY SYSTEM. You're actually hurt by a disappointing press conference. Let that sink in for a bit.

What pisses me off is that they really do have so many games to show that are ALREADY announced and they didn't show any of them! Hell, even a two minute montage of footage we already have would have been better than this... all I wanted was for the support to be acknowledged.

Fatal Frame IV
Rune Factory
Wario Shake
Tenchu 4
Little King's Story
MadWorld
Monster Hunter 3
Oboro Muramasa Youtuden (?)
Crystal Bearers (?)

And that's not including unknown third and first party games being worked on right now that could have been shown at the conference that were actually worthwhile! Nope. Forget that. Instead we get Call of Treyarch 2, Raving Rabbids 5 and... what was the other game?

Whatever.
And yeah...

Shiren 3.

Shiren 3 wasn't at e3 asdarafadfa

I don't care that much that it wasn't at e3, but it hasn't even been announced for US. I REALLY don't like playing games like this in moon language.

Where did he predict this? I have the same info he has, and really, I'm shocked it hasn't appeared yet.

Yeesh. It's so interesting and overwhelming to see so much complaining in one thread.

I'm already set for the year with games for the platforms I own (close to at least 2-3 a month without any more announcements currently) and have a ton of games (Wii too, amazingly) that I'm gonna be all about in 2009. While yes, the conference itself wasn't great at pointing out some of the support the console is getting, some of you are totally overreacting too much.

For those people that are saying they're going to sell it: sell the goddamn thing already.

Only thing i saw interesting was Wii Sports 2. All the other games didn't do it for me. Very dissapointed with Nintendo this E3. I knew the conference was going to be all about casual stuff but I was hoping for more announcements after the conference or more demos on the show floor. Pretty pathetic. If this is all nintendo has (first party) for the rest of this year then i am very dissapointed. Hopefully they are just holding back the announcements for another date.

It's nothing. NOTHING.

I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE HAVE SUCH SHORT MEMORIES.
Don't worry I don't have short memories. I'm not getting my hopes up. In fact, I'm expecting no more new announcement from this clusterfuck of an event at this point. Still, I'm not against being pleasantly surprised.

Windu said:
i hope so. doubt it will happen But where did these people get their info?
They are invited to the event.

Ziggy says that in order for you to leap, you need to make everyone remember Thursdayton and how this is exactly like that.

But yeah, I don't think I should have posted that info anyway... It's just fodder for disappointment...

I was watching the conference last night on the IGN Livewire stream.
Hitting fast forward was hilarious

Someone with mad GIF skills should jump on that. Especially during Iwata’s speech, it was just camp pose after camp pose. And the MILF woman had a series of Joker type smiles going on.

Late to the "party" and all. Sorry about that: would have come by much earlier and closer to the conference, but I had an IRC room to moderate and all that, and it was pretty bloody fun. And I also don't usually like posting "in the moment" anyway; I'd rather gain some distance.

So, yeah, a little while back I made a semi-concise post (at least by my standards) in the conglomerate E3 thread, but might as well expand a bit more here...

Wii Wonder What Kind of "Music" That Is

Conceptually, Wii Music was more or less the only game with "Wii" in its title that I was looking forward to since I like rhythm games. But what they delivered doesn't particularly look like a rhythm game. It looks like--I don't even know what it looks like, but I don't have anything positive to say about it.

Seriously, Nintendo, Not Even List Wars?

First-party or third-party, there are many, many great or great-seeming games that we know about, releasing this very year, that didn't get so much as a one-second appearance in a text list of upcoming games. Kirby Super Star Ultra. Wario Land Shake It. Dragon Quest IV DS, Chrono Trigger DS. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Mega Man 9, Final Fantasy IV DS. Nothing? No mentions? It would almost make sense if they stuck entirely to casual games, but they did drop Call of Duty and Star Wars in there for I'm-not-sure-what-reason. Why not show what you have?

Downloadables on the Down-low

Also known as Wii's salvation, at least from my personal biased perspective.

No mention of Virtual Consle--understandable enough in a twisted kind of way, since Nintendo (of America) did a fantastic job with it from November 2006 to around January of February 2008 only to fall just short of killing it. I wouldn't call attention to such either, but the lack of mention still hurts.

Even more confusing is the absence of WiiWare. This serviced launched two months ago. Two months and three days if you want to get really technical. It would be perfectly timely in every way to have mentioned and promoted it now. Are they hoping that everybody will just download the Nintendo Channel and check it out that way? Well, maybe. But even if so, that only accounts for pre-existing games. I'm honestly left wondering if part of the reason that we already saw trailers of Mega Man 9 and Alien Crush before E3 is that perhaps Capcom and Hudson knew Nintendo didn't want anything to do with them in terms of stage presence.

Above all, though, the continued lack of a storage solution is what hurts most. :(

Wii Speak

Co--oh, $30? Eh.

Cammie Dunaway?

I certainly hope she'll be "done away" with for future conference purposes. She's not a great speaker, even in the context of what she was trying to accomplish. She may be good with her job behind the scenes, but on-stage? Nah.

Worst Conference Ever

But with that said, there's nothing new to me in not caring about Wii's retail lineup. And at least DS is continuing to provide a rock-awesome lineup and I respect it immensely. My favorite system ever, in fact.

However, as for Nintendo itself--the company and its direction, not its hardware or the software made for its hardware--I'll say this. Up until around 2006 I was able to retain a really strong fanlove for Nintendo despite any missteps they made. This is because, every year very nearly without exception, from 1995-2006, they'd put out at least one exceptionally amazing title--and frequently two!

Would I say they slowed down in 2007? No, I wouldn't. In 2008? Not particularly. And yet what I would say is that Nintendo has been chipping away at my good will since 2007 precisely because of their marketing focus. The games themselves are as fine as ever, at least to me. They're operating perfectly functionally on the software side. However, their focus weakens my faith that this isn't something more than a fleeting miracle.

Did Wii get Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. Brawl, Fire Emblem: RD, Mario Strikers, Super Paper Mario, Legend of Zelda: TP, and other beloved core titles relatively early in its life? Absolutely! But if someone were to ask me whether I think that Nintendo will keep it up for their next home console, then I wouldn't say "yes" without hesitation--and that's a change for me. I used to buy every Nintendo system (sans Virtual Boy, anyway) because I was dead certain that they'd all deliver a quality title in everly or nearly every quality Nintendo franchise, but... Well, I'm not one of the doomsayers panicking that they'll never make hardcore games again or any such thing, but I certainly think there's not much to suggest that their current pace of producing such games will be sustained indefinitely and that Nintendo will always be catering to both sides. We'll see, I guess.

So... Can't speak for others, but I'm honestly at least a little bit worried. That may sound like a non-committal statement to some of the reactionaries in here, mind you, but for me it's a definite change.

No.
Just No

Although i do want them to announce Pikmin 3 later, just to step on Amir0x's toes. I hated the conference as much as anyone, but the wiimotion+ is leaps and bounds ahead of any HD visuals others offer...... now just give me more storage!

With news like Dead Rising Wii Fall 2008 etc it seems more and more likely Nintendo delibertly lightened the 1st party load for last half of year to give 3rd Party room.

This isn't good, Sam. They don't remember.
I love it. Yesterday, everyone wanted to sell their Wiis because of "teh disappointment", and today they are already getting their hopes up... to be disappointed again. :lol

Was announced in famitsu today. Redone Dead Rising 1 with RE4 style camera and controls, new content etc

Thread exists on it. This would be the surprising take on a next gen favorite they spoke of I do believe unless Capcom has more surprises.

It does? Cause this is what I'm seeing:

In a few hours, Nintendo could unveil a new game during a private conference at E3 2008. We are very optimistic on this one, because this kind of conference often hides great announcements at Nintendo. This was the case two years ago with the same roundtable for Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii which was unveiled (one of my best moments at E3). We are covering this event, so we should have the answer soon.

The whole Gamekyo article, Powered by Google Translate...->

Nintendo has unfortunately not revealed surprises at its E3 conference in Los Angeles yesterday, which has disappointed many players (we first ...). But there are still chances to see perhaps a surprise announcement of a new game, since Nintendo is organizing today (in a few hours, late afternoon in Los Angeles) a private presentation that is still quite mysterious since we still do not know what (s) game (s) will be shown. Why are we so optimistic? Simply because it was two years ago, the same scenario took place at E3, Nintendo had organized to effect a private presentation of the same type (just before the evening, which is the case here too), to reveal the Super Smash Bros. large. Brawl for Wii (certainly one of my best conferences) with a guest Snake. In any case, we wish you obviously aware as we are invited to this event. Cross our fingers.

Guess they have a very wide definition of "in a few hours"...
