E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

This will be the first time in a long time that I haven't wanted a single game for a Nintendo console during the holidays. They can't even get VC right. I think I may sell mine and pick one up next year if anything looks interesting.

Then I want all the fake fucking nintard to stop being hypocrites and admit Nintendo hates you. Then we wouldn't have these threads.

Ok Amir0x. Now I really have to admit it: you're right.

And you saw Animal Crossing? THE SAME FUCKING GRAPHICS OF THE GAMECUBE VERSION.

I really don't believe it really happened.

Weren't pretty much all of those announced at E306? E307 was considered a huge disappointment because there weren't any new hardcore games revealed, and Wii Fit stole the show.

In a couple of months, there will be some event that reveals such-and-such game that causes the usual asshats to go "OMG REDEEMED" and the other usual asshats to go "WTF THAT'S IT?"

I'll admit, I expected more from the conference, but the reason I guess I'm not pissed off is because I'm used to the pattern.

Pretty much my sentiments.

is everybody but me completely ignoring the voice chat thing? Jesus, it's gonna be awesome, especially with TWO FPS GAMES SUPPOSED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. besides, we haven't even seen what other 3rd parties have in store, plus there's a bunch of games we KNOW are coming THIS year (Fatal Frame 4, Disaster), why so serious?

i will admit i expected more, but this is pretty good too. besides, it mirrors very closely what they did last year. wait for the show to be over before you call it a bust just yet, will ya?

While I LOVED all of Wii Sports Resort (especially WAVE RACE!!!), and Animal Crossing, to have nothing for the hardcore SMG/Zelda/Metroid fan, is really disappointing.

Like others have said, there will be some stuff coming for this crowd, but Nintendo clearly wanted to keep this show pretty focused on AC, Wii Music and the new motion add on and game.

They chhose to make their conference at the Kodak Theather. At the Kodak theather with all these GAMERS (and ONLY gamers). You hear me? GAMERS were present to the conference. They should have taken their conference in a places with moms and old people instead.
No.

Sucks, definitely, for us, but this is what E3 has become for Nintendo, it's their biggest mainstream press event, that's why it was at the Kodak Theatre. The gaming press is not the main focus for Nintendo at E3, it's the broader media, and they're going to lap this show up.

Nintendo has just ensured another ridiculously positive response in the mainstream media, and complete dominance this generation, probably to a much bigger level than PS2. They also revealed what is likely to become the biggest selling game ever made (non pack in), Wii Sports Resort. This is huge in itself.

This show was no accident and went according to plan, it just wasn't for the exclusively hardcore Nintendo fans.

LINK! MARIO! SAMUS! PIT! PIKACHU! FOX!

Anyone?! PLEASE SAVE US!

Did you notice one thing: all these characters haven been replaced with Miis and crappy graphics.

Zelda was replaced with this generic Wii swordfighting. 1080 Snowboarding with this crappy Balance Board. Wavestorm with this crappy Mii-face.

Incredible. All these FUCKING Miis replaced series that defined 25 years of gaming.

I'm feeling really insulted.

It's the fault of the hardcore gamers not supporting the Gamecube enough. See what you get for it.

well, i have to say that the first half of the gamecubes life was poor because of the quality of games, with notible few exeptions - luigis mansion, rogue squadron and if you have a poor start its tricky to claw it back especially with a new cash rich competitor entering the market.

It was the second half of its life, where Iwatas brilliance first came to light with this unbeatable catalogue;

SMB 2
F-Zero GX
Killer 7
Metal Gear Solid Remake
RE4
RE Remake
RE0
DK:JB
Zelda:WW
Zelda:TP
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2
MK: DD

plus many others

I'm still hoping that they're winding us up and it all is different this time tomorrow

I understand the point, but let me say that at the conference the press was VERY hardcore oriented. So, if I was a journalist, I would feel really disappointed and angry right now.

And I never said that this is not the right move for Nintendo. It is. But abandon the gamers COMPLETELY like that it's just stupid. The combination of the expanded audience and the old audience is a winning combination.

Galaxy proved that. Twilight Princess too. Curruption as well. And Smash is the first to involve. They all sold very good and better then their predecessor. But of course not as good as their non-games. I suppose this is the core of the problem.

Tell me what you want, but I don't agree with Nintendo this time. At this point, what they're making is not videogaming anymore. They're slowly quit tzhe industry and they're finding not an expanded audience, but a brand new one.

:lol at GAF's usual hissy fit and super-overreaction to everything. This might be a fruitless plea, but try to grow up and cool down just a little. Extreme stupidity might be entertaining, but it's also a bit annoying.

No more Zeldas, Marios, Metroids, Smash Bros', Fire Emblem's etc. etc. ever? Do you really believe that? Really? Was Wario and Fatal Frame and so on canceled because they weren't on the conference? Seriously. It's like, calm down, man.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of your know about hardcore gaming culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like the casual gaming market where you can become successful with simple games. If you screw a hardcore gamer over, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the hardcore gamers, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Wii Music, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.

Nintendo, publicly apologize and cancel Wii Music, Wii Sports 2, and Animal Crossing for Wii or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Jesus christ, get over yourself already :lol If releasing casual games = Nintendo screwing the hardcore, the hardcore were raped years ago. Hell, they were raped when Nintendo announced and focused its attention on Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, etc.

The hardcore could abandon the Wii right now and it would barely make a difference.

If you can't deal with the current reality that is Nintendo and the Wii, get a PS3 or an Xbox 360 or, hell, play the games that are still coming out for the PS2.

I honestly don't understand all the whining. Even if I was a one-console kinda guy (and I'm not), I think I'd be perfectly happy with just a Wii. I have more than 10 games for it right now that cover a wide range of genres. But guess what? If Nintendo never releases another 'hardcore' game again, I'll enjoy what I already bought while buying new games for my PS3.

Nothing about hardcore v casuals, but the presentation was awful in how thin the games are.

Animal Crossing will be good and hit the sweet spot of the gamers who like it but there's nothing else to see. The 3rd party offerings seem more interesting. Sim City Creator, Age of Empires Mythologies etc.

I just made the same point in the show floor thread, but Nintendo has to have another kind of event coming up soon. Their showfloor lineup doesn't even include Warioland.

Are they going to Leipzig? Maybe another Media Summit?

Because right now their DS and Wii lineups are painfully thin.

Mithos Yggdrasill said:
Ani, let me say just one thing: I wasn't expecting Zelda. I wasn't expecting big things. But this was really pathetic. Why? Not a single new hardcore game. I would have be grateful to see at least Warioland on screen.

This is exactly what happened last year. You act like it's a new thing. Did EVERYONE forget what the fuck happened at E307? The only new game was Endless Ocean, a casual swimming game (and actually, that was revealed at some September thing in 06). Hell, Wario Land and Fatal Frame 4 are the only two hardcore Nintendo titles they've announced to publish since 2006.

So, why abandon it completely? It's just stupid.

Because they see this as their path to success. In 06, Nintendo shows off SMG, TP, SSBB, and Wii Tennis. Media reports on Wii Tennis. In 07, Nintendo shows off SMG, Metroid Prime 3, Wii Fit. Media reports on Wii Fit. This time they have the 'successor' to Wii Sports and Wii Music because they think it will get them good press. Good press wins userbase.

I remember that in 2001, the media reported that the huge deal that was the Xbox, because MS was entering the gaming ring. Nevermind the show was a disaster for them. They had the Microsoft brand name and that was the story. E300 was Sega's last hurrah. They showed off a fuckload of awesome shit, but it was the PS2 that was the big story. It doesn't matter what the hardcore gamers think. It's always the mainstream that decides things in the long run.

I bought the Wii so I could play Nintendo games. That's it. I wasn't expecting it to become the market leader (though once it did, I expected the usual things to come with it- a mistake on my end). If time goes by and we don't have an event where the next Pikmin/Zelda/Mario/whatever is revealed, or the next Zelda is as bad as Phantom Hourglass or somesuch, you'll bet I'll join in on the bitching. Right now, I don't see the point.

My question to Nintendo fans: What will it take for you guys to give it up? You guys went in with incredibly modest expectations and they still failed you big time.

Super Mario galaxy IS one of the best hardcore games of this generation (if not the best). Corruption is amazing. Smash is incredible.

Until now, after all, the situation was acceptable. ACCEPTABLE is the right word. But now, I have to agree with you. But let me say that until now, we ALL suspected (most of all after Smash's sales) that Nintendo would have mantained an equilibrium between games and non-games.

Afer all Nintendo announced Warioland and this new accessory. We weren't suspecting anything like that until now.

Wow. What a disappointment.

Ok ani. Got the point. Maybe it's really time to move on. Thanks for answering.

I just still cannot believe it. But maybe I'm still immersed in the Ocarina of Time' era. 10 years passed. And time is really changed.

Well, they did announce Mario Kart.

And again, I expected more this year simply because right now their lineup for Wii and DS is just terrible.

I'm feeling better though because with Nintendo's floor lineup they must have an event coming up soon- I mean they aren't even showing off Warioland!

not necessarily saying that you're wrong but how many games have you actually played this gen? do you own a 360 and a ps3? have you played all the "big" games to make that sort of statement?

I just had a frightening thought..did Nintendo really announce the most new (not downloadable) titles? :lol :lol

Well, the mainstream press will think Nintendo's got all bases covered, because they're not in any way hardcore. They'll have a couple of sentences about the 3rd party core stuff, then it'll all be about how Nintendo is advancing motion control with a brand new Wii Sports title next year and how they have new fun family games out this holiday in Wii Music and Animal Crossing.

But apart from that I agree with you. Nintendo should've shown at least a couple of things for their traditional hardcore faithful, definitely. But, I wouldn't rule out some good stuff coming, just closer to release, like Nintendo has been doing for the last couple of years.

The winning formula is, like you said, both audiences, and Nintendo knows this, even though you wouldn't think it from this conference.

Super Mario galaxy IS one of the best hardcore games of this generation (if not the best). Corruption is amazing. Smash is incredible.
Absolutely!

I've not enjoyed anything on any system as much as SMG, it's stunning! 242 stars later and I still love playing it. Nintendo can still make the very best hardcore gaming experiences around and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of this kind of thing.

My lord, the drama in here. Calm the hell down, people. They're not abandoning you, at least not as readily as gamers abandoned them in the past. You're still going to get your Mario and Zelda games, your Metroids and the rest. Grow up. It wasn't the showing we wanted, but E3 means something very different to Nintendo than it does to us. It's their way of showcasing new products that they feel will deliver in both mindshare and money.

We know they have Wario Land coming; we know Fatal Frame is there also. And really, considering the number of people who work for Nintendo, wasn't it inevitable that they would eventually run out of new core products to showcase after delivering more in the first eighteen months of the system's life than Sony and Microsoft combined?

<GAF> Wah wah wah Nintendo aren't letting 3rd party developers have a chance
<Nintendo@E3> Hai guys how about these 3rd party games huh!
<GAF> WAH WAH WAH

'Gratz to the Clone Wars guys, awesome work to get your game up there

But I do own a Wii, and the reason I own it came out. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime III. They were totally rad. And I had a few bonuses along the way Super Paper Mario, Endless Ocean and Boom Blox.

But if this is the future, I see no reason for us to NOT react exactly like this. Since this is a message board for hardcore gamers, and most of us who aren't hypocrites don't have a tolerance for such bullshit.

That's the point. Until now, I think we can all agree that there were excellents reasons to own a Wii.

Until today.

All you people telling me that Nintendo is not FOR ME anymore can go eat my ass.

Every show they at least throw me a bone. Every time they announce Wii Fit, they announce a new core IP to go along with it. They always do that. And I have no problem with it. I buy Mario Galaxy, I ignore Wii Fit. That's my agreement with Nintendo and I don't care if they make Wii Poop.

But THIS....not one new game for core gamers. Not one new Wii Ware announcement. Nothing even slipped into the press kit.

Nintendo is my old friend who doesn't even want to be seen with me anymore. And if you are okay with that, then what the fuck did you like Nintendo for in the first place?

Go ahead and defend this all you want, but Nintendo better announce some stuff soon.

Agreed. Good post.

A lot of people are glancing over the announcement that they are working on a new Zelda and Mario for Wii. Hey, at least its something.

Star Wars: TFU Got a good slot of the PSP montage footage for Sony :P

The biggest surprise for me was that this might be the first time they've done something that I feel goes against their disruptive momentum this generation. At some point this year, they need to showcase some core games that will get the core demographic enthusiastic. They've a virtual monopoly on the non-gamer audience, so not expanding out is strange considering they have some core product to show even if it's not earth-shaking in its content. [Wario Land and Fatal Frame obviously, but some 3rd party products like Litte King Story and such.]

I can understand if they've turned E3 into their 'capture the mainstream consumer' show, but they need something this year to reach people like those on GAF.

If they at least showed all the games they has already announced then I would have been vaguely happy.

I mean Warioland,Fatal Frame and Disaster Day of Crisis would have been a nice bone to throw at the hardcore....and all 3 are nearly finished.

Even if they are going to cancel Disaster... at least they could have pretended it was still coming out :lol .

The problem is that I haven't a lot of time to play games. Last game I played on Wii was Galaxy in december.

I follow videogaming, but I haven't materially much time. The problem is that where I study, I haven't a Wii (for obvious reasons), and I return to home only a few times per year. When it is the case, I play some selected games. I buy only the best (in my opinion).

Edit: I have intention to buy Smash, but still haven't had the opportunity.
The same for Zack and Wiki, Endless Ocean, Fire Emblem,.... and lots of DS games. My last DS game was Castlevania Portrait of Ruin.

In practice, I'm not really a gamer anymore, since I have lot to do. The only thing I do is enjoying videogaming discussions. It's the only thing I can do about games.

OMG until today? My Fire Emblem, MP3: Corruption and Mario Galaxy discs have self-destructed?

As others have said already, calm the fuck down.

I'm sure that Nintendo will announce more core franchises in the future. Just like last year they chose to focus on the mass market in their E3 conference and *gasp* just like last year people are freaking out for no good reason.

Oh my god this bitching is just like last year. Maybe Nintendo just doesn't give two shits about E3 anymore other than for releasing info like this that the rest of the world outside of GAF cares about.

"OH NO. SMASH BROTHERS ISN'T AT E3?!"
Oh wait...

Nintendo used the opportunity to show off the games that needed big openings. Any news on a new Zelda or whatever doesn't need to be announced for gamers at E3, they can announce those sorts of games whenever and gamers will know within 20 minutes.:lol

Well, this is what I posted in my now closed topic, so I take it the mods wanted me to post it here instead! :D

I think everyone is overreacting.

Surely they are leaning more towards the casual side, but honestly, everyone who EXTREMELY disappointed today quite frankly are the cause of their own suffering. They over-hyped themselves and today Nintendo had an utter failure of a conference that IS NOT entirely representative of their future.

There are great games coming that have already been announced that we know about, and there are surely MANY hardcore oriented games being developed with the 1:1 MotionPlus add-on in mind. Do I need to remind anyone of the increase of great third party support from Japan in the recent months?

Nintendo didn't take E3 seriously, which yes, does suck for us, the hardcore fans.... but to say this is the "end" of Nintendo being viable and relevant to hardcore gamers?

GOD.
Just wait for TGS... and yes, I know Nintendo usually does not attend, but most of their 3rd party support comes from Japan so...

Following the Wii Music trend, Nintendo's next console was just announced to be a simple circuit box that, when plugged into your TV, displays full screens of solid color at random hues and intervals, all without need for any input device.

"We've found that many non-gamers find the act of interpreting visuals and conveying movement too complex. We want our games to be as functional for the new gamer as they are for the seasoned veteran, in every color of the rainbow, so long as it's red or orange (studies show that colors higher in the spectrum confuse the market)."

ok so you barely play any games and you probably don't even have a 360, you don't even play 360 games? then how, HOW could you make a statement like "mario galaxy is the best game this gen"?

"one of the best"

Anyway, another dude who study with me play regulary with its X360. Sometimes I play with it too. (not often)
Yeah, but I agree that my knowledges with games now are more virtual then concrete.
I cannot doing anything about it. Only enjoying gaming discussions here.

Anyway, you can disagree with me in any moment about my statements about Galaxy. You have the reasons to so it.
Maybe "I'm using an old meter" to evaluate new games. Sometimes I'm feeling too much like a N64/GC-gamer.

Sorry if this situation makes me not really a true gamer. In fact, I haven't really big arguments to support the theory that Galaxy is better then every else. Probably it isn't. But let me say that I dind't enjoyed a game like that since years. And this was for me a big indication about its quality.
