E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

Vangellis: Agreed. Just because this casual gaming machine is selling a shitload doesn't mean the the 360 and PS3 am doomed. Shit, Bejeweled is one of the best selling games of all time for chrissake. Just like Stringer said, it's a completely different audience that is buying the Wii and they are not really in direct competition with it. Nintendo fans can say phooey to that all they want, but it's like saying there's no market for more expensive food since McDonald's is outselling them by a huge margin.
 
There's going to be more on the floor... right? I mean, only two Wii announcements for the fall season? Yikes.

Weren't pretty much all of those announced at E306? E307 was considered a huge disappointment because there weren't any new hardcore games revealed, and Wii Fit stole the show.

In a couple of months, there will be some event that reveals such-and-such game that causes the usual asshats to go "OMG REDEEMED" and the other usual asshats to go "WTF THAT'S IT?"

I'll admit, I expected more from the conference, but the reason I guess I'm not pissed off is because I'm used to the pattern.

This isn't the kind of E3 where they can have a surprise event like the Brawl unveiling in '06. There will be more core announcements in the near future, I'm sure, but almost certainly not at E3.

Look at how Wario Land Shake was announced: at a small Japanese retailer event, less than two months before the Japanese release and only four months before the US date. I think a lot of future first-party core announcements will be along those lines.

EDIT: I also like how E3 went from, "Oh no, it means nothing - it's not even really E3 anymore" to it suddenly meaning everything.

No Fatal Frame 4 or Disaster footage. I don't think either one is going to end up being very enjoyable, but the company's obviously picking and choosing what they want to display here.

Also zero WiiWare (thought MM9 was a lock), no Wario Land...I realize what Nintendo is doing but they could have shown like a 2 minute trailer to somewhat placate the core.

I don't know how much the rest of your know about hardcore gaming culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like the casual gaming market where you can become successful with simple games. If you screw a hardcore gamer over, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the hardcore gamers, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Wii Music, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.

Nintendo, publicly apologize and cancel Wii Music, Wii Sports 2, and Animal Crossing for Wii or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Meh. I'm disappointed not because of the conference itself, but because right now there are only 2 Wii titles I'm somewhat looking forward to.

Last year, the conference was mediocre, but they had a robust line up in the horizon, right now, however, that isn't the case, at all...

It does make me wonder, though... so far, Nintendo has released few "casual" games and managed to have success through them due to their continuous sales. However, right now, they have 3 casual titles in the near future (Music, Crossing and Resort)...? It's definitely a change in their business.

New colour controllers
External storage
Wii Music
Kid Icarus

It's hardly worth putting your Mario suit on!!

and I replied;

new wii sku - possible new colour - new deluxe pack
new zelda - to take advantage of new wii accessory

Super Smash bros sold like CRAZY, so why stop completely with hardcore games?

Since the main ninthing defense for the conference is that it was "meant for casuals", you'd think that Nintendo might have done those small indie devs a favor and helped to raise awareness of Wiiware to the extremely large segment of Wii owners who have no idea that Wiiware even exists.

If they'd shown off KI or the Retro game, my prediction for this thing would have been pretty much spot on. A bit more disappointing than I'd expected, but the reaction is what I thought it'd be.

I'm just surprised it only lasted a little over an hour. The MS and Sony shows were/are at least 1.5 hours, right?

I'm not defending Nintendo's PR strategy. I'm just pointing out that it's pretty clear from this conference, last year's, and the company's other recent events what that strategy is.

I agree. They should have announced Pikmin 3 or shown a quick reel with more games.

But the notion that they are suddenly abandoning core games is a bit much.

I still expect Pikmin 3 and Punch Out announced before the end of the year.

Ani, let me say just one thing: I wasn't expecting Zelda. I wasn't expecting big things. But this was really pathetic. Why? Not a single new hardcore game. I would have be grateful to see at least Warioland on screen.

What the fuck, really. Nintendo really screw us all.

Let me say that I'm the first that say that the new audience is really important, but there is also the other side: gamers are important too!! After all both Sony and Microsoft are (more or less) making money with THIS audience. So, why abandon it completely? It's just stupid.

i think this'll happen at every major event that nintendo's expected to deliver new games at for years to come. lots of dissapointment because people keep forgetting that nintendo's got a new path to head down. should be funny.
