E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

Phoo... the feeling is underwhelming. The failure-ton this E3 is huge. For all three.

Anyways, I feel the E3 presentation of Nintendo was again about discussing the disruptive cycle in gaming. It seems Nintendo (well, Iwata) thinks nobody gets the strategy of Nintendo. But hey, I would be confused to if even Nintendo themselves announce only Animal Crossing, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music. Sigh. To be honest, I'm excited for Wii Sports Resort pure just for the Sword fighting game and the Wii Motionplus.

And with all the graphs and all, the message seemed: Normal software sells well on Wii. 19 third party titles over 400,000 + only in America. Make something for Wii. It almost looked like begging. :/

And god, Cammie is annoying FACT.

ok so you barely play any games and you probably don't even have a 360, you don't even play 360 games? then how, HOW could you make a statement like "mario galaxy is the best game this gen"?
It's the best game (or one of the best) to him. No one played every game released this gen on every console, but everyone chooses what they consider to be their best games.

:lol at GAF's usual hissy fit and super-overreaction to everything. This might be a fruitless plea, but try to grow up and cool down just a little. Extreme stupidity might be entertaining, but it's also a bit annoying.

No more Zeldas, Marios, Metroids, Smash Bros', Fire Emblem's etc. etc. ever? Do you really believe that? Really? Was Wario and Fatal Frame and so on canceled because they weren't on the conference? Seriously. It's like, calm down, man.
So you would be happy with Wario and Fatal Frame IV as the holiday core game lineup? On the other hand, I doubt there is anything Nintendo could do without you defending it.

Ok Amir0x. Now I really have to admit it: you're right.

And you saw Animal Crossing? THE SAME FUCKING GRAPHICS OF THE GAMECUBE VERSION.

I really don't believe it really happened.

As excited as I am about Animal Crossing and I do indeed like the fact that they kept the "globe" look to the world that came from the DS version, I'm terribly insulted by the fact that they are still literally using N64 textures. Come on guys, I know it's got it's own art style and all, but low polygon count, terrible lighting and 64x64 resolution textures is NOT a style. It's unacceptable for Nintendo to be pushing this kind of crap. The worst part is that I'm still going to buy it, because I'm an AC whore. I've jumped on AC during the New Year celebration more than once, and I love the collect-a-thon gameplay. I'm a total sucker for this crap (I love Harvest Moon too, I'd lump that in to this category).

This is exactly what happened last year. You act like it's a new thing. Did EVERYONE forget what the fuck happened at E307? The only new game was Endless Ocean, a casual swimming game (and actually, that was revealed at some September thing in 06). Hell, Wario Land and Fatal Frame 4 are the only two hardcore Nintendo titles they've announced to publish since 2006.

This is the thing, why weren't these titles shown off? Not even a hint of WarioWare, Fatal Frame 4 or any of the hardcore titles that we know are under development, much less anything that's mysterious. Where's Pikmin 3? Where's a new F-Zero? What about Kid Icarus? What the hell happened here? Can't someone give me answers?!?!?!?!?

That was the best non-conference ever.

Also, I wasn't watching the Wii Music stuff, but I read they played a piece from F-Zero.

Isn't that just wrong?

So, basically, "Fuck you, F-Zero fans, but at least we'll always have Wii Music."

Wow. Hey, I can come up with retarded shit to say too.

Funny thing is, I agree that a great deal of what you wrote would come to pass, were MGS generation of never-touched-a-game-before-1998 players allowed to run Sony. I'm not about that system wars nonsense - I own a Wii, a 360, and a current-gen gaming PC, and I love my Nintendo games to death. Wii Music is not a Nintendo game. Until they prove otherwise, it's indistinguishable from a simple noisemaker.

The only plausible explanation is that Reggie and Co. consider E3 exclusively for the mainstream press, and so any hint of "old school" gaming is gone. That's why something like Wario Land, which is due out in 2 months, isn't even playable- they want to make the mainstream media's job extremely simply and make sure they get their "story", i.e Nintendo continuing to innovate, expand, etc, correct.

Now, I don't think that means Nintendo is abandoning real games or any nonsense like that. If I had to bet, I would guess that Nintendo would have an event relatively soon where "core" titles are shown.

That's really the only explanation for no Wario Land, Fatal Frame, or even Wii Ware (I was positive MM9 was a lock to be heavily featured)

Jarosh, if you're still here, let me add that you're fundamentally right. I play too few games to see really the entire "rainbow" and judge decently which game is the best or which game could be the best.

But fact is that for now I haven't had this possibilty. Not my fault. So, I played until now on console about 15-20 games (not all finished. Some only tried) on Wii/X360/PS3.
On these few games Galaxy is at the top of my list. Only that.

That's why I said "probably one of the best games". I never spoke in an absolute way for this reason.

Edit: ok. You're not here anymore. Probably you already processed me and crocified.

In the defense of Nintendo, the three games they chose to promote (Animal Crossing, Wii Sports 2, and Wii Music) are going to end up being their three-biggest games over the next year or so. I've no doubt that Nintnedo is working on other titles, but games like F-Zero, StarFox, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, and even Zelda wouldn't touch the sales of the three games Nintendo hyped up today. As a card-carrying member of the hardcore gaming community, I was disappointed in Nintendo's showing, but I can at least understand their direction. Now, with that said, even though I can understand why they put the spotlight on the casual games, I don't think it would have killed them to show a trailer or two that featured games for core gamers. Iwata's claim that the Mario and Zelda teams are hard at work was pretty much expected, but it would have been nice to see a glimpse of what they're working on. Retro and Factor-5 are apparently working on Wii projects and, again, it would have been nice to see something from them.

It seems to me that Nintendo is intentionally held back from showing their core titles because they wanted the press to focus on what will inevitably be their biggest games of the next year. Again, while I can understand this strategy I am still very disappointed by it.

Is everyone at Nintendo on vacation?

Wii Music?
Wii Sports Resort?
Animal Crossing: City Folk?

Not a single Wiiware game.
Retro no-show.
NST no-show.
Kuju?
Monster?
N-Space no-show.
Fatal Frame IV, Wario, Disaster, Captain Rainbow?!

I hope the mainstream press somehow understands what a letdown this is. I think Nintendo is getting complacent and gamers are suffering for it. I don't care if these three casual games turn out fantastic, the lack of games is simply ridiculous.

Which is why I'd suggest we hold off judgment until we gets hands-on impressions of it. When it was last shown, people seemed to enjoy it. I doubt Nintendo took out the fun aspect of it and added in retardo-version Guitar Hero. They're not that stupid.

Jesus, when you put it like that, with the exception of Wario and Monster, it sounds like we were spared.

Almost like they need an E3 conference, then an E3 After-Show in which they deluge people with the core games. Basically two conferences directed towards two very different groups of journalists.

They put in there what they wanted to see in Time magazine and on Oprah. GAF will get it's news elsewhere. This press conference wasn't for the old audience, it was for Nintendo's new generation gamer.

pfft it's ok, don't worry. besides, you can play as many or as little games as you want. i don't buy into the whole "real gamer" bullshit. i don't play very many games myself.

just saying that it can come off a little bit disingenuous when you claim that something is "the best" or "one of the best" games when it's clear that you haven't played many games this gen.

also, didn't you say in your post before that "smash brothers is incredible" yet now you post that you haven't played it yet? oops :P

Not bought it. But already played it. :P (but not deeply)

isn't everyone glad nintendo is number 1 again in the gaming world!

eh? eh?

I Would say the issue is overblown to an extent. heres what happened

Nintendo rushed to appease the hardcore and blew their load in the end of 2006/2007 period. Development started on new hardcore games in mid-late 2007.

Were in the lull period between development cycles. What makes it more pronounced for Nintendo is the lack of 3rd party AAA titles. If those existed no one would have any issue since the Wii has a ton of Games coming out this last half of the year most are just junk 3rd party though.

2009 will end up being another big Nintendo gamer year more then likely.

But guys, Malstrom said casual games aren't retarded and we all agreed. We're all glad Nintendo is expanding the industry with these great games, peripherals and sales numbers.

Why do you even come into threads like these? You spew the same trollish crap in every Wii thread and it's gotten old. We get it. You don't like the system and you despise what Nintendo is doing. Great.

Move on.

I thought the purpose of the thread was for everyone to talk about our opinions.

And in case you didn't notice, he's not exactly in the minority by bashing Nintendo in this thread.

whelp, im ebaying up my wii, nothing i want at all.. for i dont know how long?

Even if not very good atleast the 360 has some jrpgs, and tales vesperia next month.. and ff13? i have no choice but to make the plunge... the price drop recently is nice as well, makes it easier.

I'm fine with people in here bitching about their conference. That's all well and good. But he does this ALL THE TIME. It's not a response to the conference. The damn thing could've been astounding and he still would've shown up and made some snarky remark against Wii owners. My problem isn't with people complaining who had a legitimate interest in what Nintendo had to show and were subsequently disappointed by this; it's the fact that he appears in a variety of Wii-related threads for this one purpose. This E3 conference disappointing so many people only provides him easier grounds to espouse his bullshit.

All I needed was one (1), JUST ONE, hardcore game using the Motion Plus.

I couldn't stop thinking of the possibilities yesterday and convinced myself to wait until today where Nintendo will no doubt show me something. Wii Sports 2 isn't exactly what I was looking for and that is what made the conference most disappointing for me.

Guess i'll have to wait a bit longer...

It's unfortunate that you're forced to sell one console with few games you want to play just to buy another one with few games you want to play. We feel bad for you, we do!

The waiting is just fucking stupid, how long are we going to wait? There won't be a Space World...
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Music
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Mario Super Sluggers
Wario Land: Shake It!
Not to mention their new DS line-up sucked ass as well, holy shit a new Pokemon Ranger game and... wait? That's all?
Cooking Guide: Can't Decide What to Eat?
Rhythm Heaven
Kirby Super Star
Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir
Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia

They've better kept something for tommorow...

SO I just woke up.

It sucked? More than 2003.

D:
Yes, No Mikami, no F-Zero and no MGS

I'm holding out hope for atleast one surprise web announcement similar to what they did with Smash. That's all. Yeah, the conference sucked, but it was nothing to get bitter about. Pretty much par for the course for Nintendo these days.

So I guess Tales of Symphonia 2, Fragile, Arc rise fantasia, Chocobo Dungeon, and FFCC dont exist?

I feel similarly. I wish they would have demonstrated a core game using the Motionplus, especially an FPS, since from the looks of it, it may negate the need for the sensor bar outside of calibrating it at the outset. In other words, you wouldn't have to point at the sensor bar all of the time. That would be a nice treat.

Fixed. Do you remember what Iwata said at this shitty conference at the beginning?

"Even Nintendo's employers at first were against this big change".

They were right.
Man, there were a lot of things said. About sales and everything (things even said in this very forum) and then Nintendo doesn't deliver themselves. Talking about the giving of the wrong signals.

I just watched the gameplay demo of the Nintendo execs looking like idiots.

Seriously, do you just wave the Wiimote around and the game plays the music for you? Does everyone have be in synch in multiplayer?

That pisses me off.

Not mentioning anything about a storage issue bothers me as well, though if they really consider E3 to be 'mainstream press demonstration,' then it makes less sense to announce it there.

Based on what... last year?

For a system it makes sense to either release the mega games as 1st gen games or last gen games.

Used to sell the system or sell assloads when the market is biggest and if it is a special type of mega game it reaches well into the entire console base which a majority is and always will be casual.

Another thought- what does Ubisoft have on Iwata? Despite the general crap Ubisoft has given the Wii, 4 3rd party games shown, 2 of them from Ubi.
