E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

I'm (trying) to watch Ninty's conference now and goddamn - that Cassie chick or whatever is annoying the HELL out of me.

I already know the outcome, though. BOO, Nintendo, for neglecting your longtime fans.

edit: Screw this, I can't listen to Iwate either.

Nintendo, have fun with those soccer moms.

Hey!

FFCC was a megaton for me.

FF4 demonstrated Nintendo wasn't above moneyhatting.

And Sonic in Smash caused its fair shair of meltdowns.

All happening at once, it was a pretty astonishing sight to behold.

shouldn't niche fans of mass-market games be a little frightened? wii music is a pretty strong indication that nintendo have burned out, and surely you don't suppose that the new and precarious casual games market is totally impervious to bad product
Oh shut the hell up. Nintendo burned out?

Nintendo fans: if they don't get Zelda or Mario or Metroid every other month, they flip out. We already had the first wave of big releases (and really early in the Wii's lifespan), give them some time.

Ungrateful turds. This was just the conference. I'm sure they'll have demos of all of the cool games at the show, like Wario and Mad World and stuff. They do the opposite of Sony: instead of showing montages, they demo a few games. It's easy to please a fanboy by throwing a bunch of teasers around.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Nintendo had a super-strong showing. But to say they are "burned out" is just a knee-jerk reaction.

What annoys me is that Reggie actually had the audacity to call their 08 2nd half game line-up "fantastic" and "maximizing all their key franchises" (4:00 in)
What a fucking lier

I wish people said what they were expecting when the light when out...

and what they were thinking when they saw that guy doing random things with the wiimote...

There is some sort of Nintendo developers roundtable tomorrow. This is where they showed off Galaxy last year. So it will probably be AC this year then...

What time? Maybe they will actually say something about Wario Land and Fatal Frame... :/

honestly, nintendo fans should be heartened by this conference. there isn't going to be another wii sports phenomenon -- because nintendo haven't got another wii sports. a nongame in which you arbitrarily swing your arms and produce nonmusic is not the foundation of a lasting market segment. it's not even going to produce briefly enthusiastic converts at parties. in the past i'd ask myself whether the whole wii fad was going to last, and i'd have to answer 'yes' -- it's not like the wii sports crowd will suddenly decide it wants metal gear. but given nintendo's rapid burnout and the indifference or incomprehension of the development community at large, the casual games thing will lose momentum of its own. sooner or later. and nintendo will be back to peddling mario and zelda to a diminishing audience: you

Actually looking at the data, the audience for Zelda and Mario is increasing, not the other way around.

I know you're not to be taken seriously, but factual errors need to be corrected. =P

honestly your bait seems to be much more effective in smaller quips.

After all three conferences I realized these things don't really mean that much. They're great fodder for fans of the industry but there really is no benefit to showing off your stuff here and Nintendo has chosen just to make this one big commercial for their new style of gaming.

To those of you saying Nintendo has abandoned you, be realistic. They said nothing about what Retro is doing, nothing about Aonuma, nothing about Monolith, nothing about the Mario team, nothing about IS, etc. They didn't even hype the new Pokemon game (the real one, with Giratina). These casual games don't need a large budget or a big team; what do you think Nintendo is doing with the rest of its staff?

If Kid Icarus and Pikmin 3 were there as apparently planned, it may have been a great conference.

September Surprise, December Surprise, ect.

Why do people even believe Reggie when he goes on about "secrets" and surprises?

They just would have upgraded it from crap to acceptable. Cammie in this thing was a huge no-no.

worst conference ever.
Indeed.

Wii Music seems such a pathetic gimmick... it's depressing, and i even had high hopes for that.
Seeing Miyamoto pretending to be playing a sax like that was so fucking SAD.

Alright, I'm calling it now: Zelda will be at E3 next year. For one thing, Reggie mentioned that the Mario and Zelda teams were hard at work; for another, sword fighting was prominently displayed during the Wii Sports Resort demo. Imagine (lol Sony) Reggie coming up and saying something like, "I'll bet a lot of you enjoyed swordfighting in Wii Sports. Well, take a look at this!"

Just don't expect it to be the Zelda you're used to.

Nintendo burned out? hmmm...strange, I didn't get the memo...

Edit: I just got home, turned on G4, and heard they sank like the Titanic, wtf?

Yeah, the Wii overall has turned out to be a total bummer. I really like Wii Play and Wii Sports, I even take out Wii Fit when I feel guilty for not doing real exercise that day. And, I do like having the Super Mario Bros. collection on it, easy to play at any time. But fuck, it's just not interesting, anymore.

About selling it: I'm not sure yet. I certainly would not do so solely because of E3 or whatever. It's been on my mind for a while, but I'm just scared that I'll do that right before Nintendo gets the balls to make the thing fun again.

sorry, diehard N-fans. Nintendo tried it your way with the Gamecube and look where that got them. Its like you guys sold your soul for Nintendo to get back into 1st place. Only its not the way you wanted it. Its not on the back of the latest Mario, Zelda and new Miyamoto game. its not like a rebirth of the NES/SNES days like you all dreamed. Its fueled by soccer moms and Hannah Montana fans. You can't blame Nintendo. A new Icarus wouldn't mean shit to these new fans. They are doing what is succesful. Thats what a business is supposed to do. Nintendo doesn't owe you shit, between the 360, PS3, PC, PSP, PS2 and DS there are still plenty of "hardcore" games for you to play and always will be. Stop your bitching.

whoa, take it easy there champ, I just want the low down...I still have no idea what happened...

For those disappointed that no Zelda or Mario were announced ( Nintendo said they were working on games in those series), it's plainly obvious why not. Twilight Princess came out at the end of 2006, Mario Galaxy came out at the end of 2007. So mid 2008 / E3 2008 is much too soon. I'd expect E3 2009 to have a playable version of either the next Zelda or the next Mario, if not both. Nintendo's teams need TIME to surpass the masterpieces that were TP and SMG. These kind of games aren't made in 2 years / every 2 years.

Yeah, the Wii is almost exactly like the NES (from a marketing/business standpoint). Except the market is different now.

Were those franchises in any way sacrificed? No, they are still around and as awesome as ever, so I don't see where the "sold your soul" speak comes in.

those franchises will always be around, and we'll get our Mario and Zelda games every few years, hell im sure Nintendo has some Donkey Kong and Kirby stuff cooking as well, but people expecting Nintendo to put big time budgets behind new "hardcore" IPs are kidding themselves. why bother when the can put 1/4th of the resources into Wii Music and sell twice as many copies?

Alright so what we now know is...

Nintendo hates us. Really really hates us.

Nintendo really really hates third parties who put effort into their games. On Wii they demonstrated two Ubisoft games (which is really all that needs to be said), Call of Duty and a Star Wars spin-off. Never mind the fact that the likes of Sega (Samba de Amigo, Mad World) and Marvelous (Arc Rise Fantasia, Little King Story) are actually giving the system some genuine support while Ubisoft have basically just pissed in the faces of everyone who owns a Wii to date.

Nintendo hates core games full stop, No Wario. No Disaster. No Fatal Frame.

Bring back connectivity, at least Four Swords was actually fucking awesome.
I think this is thier worse E3 to date in oresent memory but if Nintendo really hated us, they would not have announced those games at all.

Ok, so we got...Shaun White Snowboarding (uses balance board), Animal Crossing: City Folk, Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, CoD5, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Wii MotionPlus , Wii Speak, Wii Sports Resort.

yeah...that's pretty bland as far as I'm concerned, not a lot going on here. No surprise third party megatons, no new IP, no Icarus, not even Fatal Frame...

Microsoft stole the show with FF13 excl.

They could, not saying they will, but Nintendo could have a stronger show at TGS? It's a bit of a stretch, but who knows?

They call it Wii Fit nowadays.

Besides, Wii Sports is not done pushing Wii hardware at all!

And Mario Kart is now pushing systems too, I am making $500 a week on these hot babies.

They had a relatively weak e3 in everyone's opinion in 2007, but they had thier own event around the time of TGS.

That's where they announced FF 4 and MH3 exclusivity and Sonic in Smash IIRC.

I do think Nintendo need to show some 'core' games. Wii in general is selling to: Nintendo's loyal audience, a large portion of the casuals and kids who made the first two PlayStation consoles mainstream (the sort of people who had maybe a sports game, a movie license and not much else) and have expanded that by reeling in people who simply have never been into games at all.

However, you need a core. You won't stay on top forever so it doesn't pay to alienate your 'base' in the long run, because said base helped Nintendo through the lean years. I enjoy the Wii greatly but I think Nintendo do need to ponder a few things - So do third parties who won't survive if they continue to fail to back the runaway market leader, but perhaps Nintendo should offer them something of an 'incentive' to bring wide-ranging, big budget exclusives to the console to keep the core audience happy.

As Sony have discovered to their detriment, the vast majority of PS1/2 owners weren't the sort of people who'd stick around forever, and consequently there'll be a big rethink of the next PS console.

I must emphasise though that third parties should take a decent amount of the blame here - Nintendo can't be all things to all men at all times and if you imagine the sorry state the PS3 / 360 would be in if they received the sort of grudging support Wii does, you have to remove some of the blame from Nintendo's shoulders.

The funny thing is, looking at the tech, Wii Motion Plus is pretty impressive. If only they'd demonstrated it with a Zelda or lightsaber game in additional to another Wii Sports shitfest it would have been a great conference.

my GOD you people are IDIOTS. you lose all faith in a company because they don't give you EXACTLY what you want? well, i hate to break it to you, but beggars can't be choosers. we beg and we beg for games we know are coming like Disaster Day of Crisis, or Fatal Frame 4, but Nintendo doesn't show them off at their conference! Oh no! They all must not exist now, because we can't watch other people play them! Certainly Animal Crossing isn't EXACTLY what we wanted because Nintendo showed off Wii Music, and now this "Motionplus" peripheral sooooo gimmicky since it's packed with Wii Sports 2. Why isn't Nintendo releasing an overpriced hard drive? Don't they want my consumerist whore-dollars? Woe is you! Woe is you, gamer who demands EXACTLY your wants and nothing else. Heaven forbid that there be OTHER people who like to play games who, and this is the truly awful part, may enjoy games of a different variety! So Nintendo decides to show off its NEWEST games that appeal to the largest market on their limited floor space, completely ignoring the games YOU want to see. Why? Well it couldn't possibly be that they want to maximize coverage of these games, so it must be because they hate you!

Seriously, do people learn nothing? at the end of the day, you all will be sucking Nintendo's balls saying how awesome the game you just bought from them was. it's true. anyone who played Galaxy, Kart, Brawl, or whatever other "hardcore" Nintendo game they bought because they like the series are unable to say they didn't have fun. stop being whiny pansies, and just look for what you like in what's there.

Wii Music looks pretty sweet, so does that WiiSpeak. There's plenty for me to look forward to, and Nintendo published games aren't the biggest items on my list. So please, stop whining. You "hardcore" are bigger disappointments than anything Nintendo did or didn't announce.

ok, i'm done. by the time this is up, i hope the thread hasn't normalize and i just threw a wrench into it, but this kind of whining is just stupid.

edit: oh great, i'm at the top of the page...
